Allergic photocontact dermatitis due to suprofen. Photopatch testing and cross-reaction study.

We report 5 cases of photocontact dermatitis due to suprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug introduced to the Japanese market in 1989, and available as a 1% ointment. The patients developed pruritic eczematous lesions after applying the ointment for from 2 weeks to 3 months. All 5 patients reacted positively to photopatch testing with ultraviolet A (UVA) and suprofen down to 0.1-0.01% pet., and 3 patients showed positive reactions with ultraviolet B (UVB) and suprofen down to 1.0-0.1%. Moreover, all patients showed a cross-reaction with tiaprofenic acid, which has a very similar chemic…

Blockade of atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions by DA-9102, a natural medicine isolated from Actinidia arguta, in the Mg-deficiency induced dermatitis model of hairless rats.

DA-9102 isolated from Actinidia arguta is a candidate of natural medicine currently under Phase II clinical trial for atopic dermatitis in Korea. In this study, spontaneous dermatitis was induced by magnesium deficiency in hairless rats and this system was applied to assess the suppressive effects of DA-9102 on atopic dermatitis-like skin disease. Oral administration of DA-9102 at a dose of 100 mg/kg for 16 days substantially suppressed the occurrence of spontaneous dermatitis. Eczematous skin lesions, water loss and scratching behavior were significantly decreased by DA-9102 in a dose-depende…

Use of systemic therapies in adults with atopic dermatitis: 12-month results from the European prospective observational study in patients eligible for systemic therapy for atopic dermatitis (EUROSTAD).

BACKGROUND: The European Prospective Observational Study in Patients Eligible for Systemic Therapy for Atopic Dermatitis (EUROSTAD) is an ongoing observational study aiming to describe characteristics of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) treated with systemic therapy over time and the management of their disease in a real-world setting. METHODS: Data from patients enrolled in EUROSTAD between March 2017 and April 2019 were analyzed for systemic therapy use and treatment change over 12 months. RESULTS: 288 patients reported taking systemic medications; 42.7% received cyclosporine, 35.3% du…

Cellular sensitivity to oxidative stress in the photosensitivity dermatitis/actinic reticuloid syndrome.

Skin fibroblasts from certain patients with the photosensitivity dermatitis/actinic reticuloid syndrome show enhanced sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation compared to normal fibroblasts. To probe further the link between oxidative damage and this disease, we have obtained a more extensive set of cell lines from patients with a severe form of the disease and examined their sensitivity towards oxidative stress by measuring cell survival following UVA radiation (330-450 nm) or hydrogen peroxide treatment (0.1-2.4 mM). The activation of the stress gene, heme oxygenase, has also been assessed by me…

Chronic actinic dermatitis. Study of the spectrum of chronic photosensitivity in 12 patients.

Twelve patients with photodermatitis for longer than 3 months' duration were identified: 1 patient with chronic photocontact dermatitis, 1 with persistent photosensitivity following exposure to a systemic medication, 6 with persistent light reactivity, and 4 with actinic reticuloid. There were 10 men and 2 women, ranging in age from 27 to 81 years, with a mean age of 62 years. The duration of the eruption ranged from 6 months to 20 years. Persistence of photosensitivity to quinidine, which is analogous to persistent light reactivity, was documented in 1 patient, and evolution from photocontact…

Elastotic and citrine skin following an allergic photo-contact dermatitis in a child.

A case of Phenergan-induced allergic photo-contact dermatitis in a boy aged 11 years is described. The condition produced a dermatological picture of senile-looking elastosis and citrine skin in exposed areas.
