The Toxin of the Year: Airborne PM2.5.

Particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of 2.5 µm or smaller (PM2.5) has emerged as a critical environmental toxin affecting skin health. In light of its widespread and often underestimated impact, we designated PM2.5 as the "toxin of the year." Although PM2.5 primarily affects the respiratory system, growing evidence indicates that it also plays a significant role in cutaneous health. Exposure to PM2.5 can lead to oxidative stress, inflammation, and impairment of the skin barrier, particularly in individuals with preexisting skin conditions. An increasing number of studies highlight an associ

Microbiome-Based Products: Therapeutic Potential for Inflammatory Skin Diseases.

Maintaining a balanced skin microbiota is essential for skin health, whereas disruptions in skin microbiota composition, known as dysbiosis, can contribute to the onset and progression of various skin disorders. Microbiota dysbiosis has been associated with several inflammatory skin conditions, including atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, acne, psoriasis, and rosacea. Recent advances in high-throughput sequencing and metagenomic analyses have provided a deeper understanding of the skin microbial communities in both health and disease. These discoveries are now being translated into nove

Mini-Review on Vitamin D in Pediatric Population and its Role in Respiratory and Atopic Disorders.

In recent years, our comprehension of the function of vitamin D has significantly evolved. The ubiquitous presence of the vitamin D receptor (Vitamin D Receptor- VDR) in the body has led to its redefinition from a steroidal hormone primarily involved in skeletal functions to a hormone with pleiotropic effects, exerting its influence on the circulatory, nervous, and immune systems. This has prompted investigations into its potential use in preventing and treating chronic metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, infections, and allergic and autoimmune diseases. This comprehensive review exp

Determinants of asthma among adults in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia: a facility-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a public health concern affecting millions of productive age groups. Several studies were conducted on the determinants of asthma in children. However, little is known about the determinants of asthma among adults in Ethiopia. Understanding the determinants of asthma among adults can help reduce its burden. This study was aimed at identifying determinant factors for developing asthma among adults in Tigray hospitals. METHODS: A facility-based, unmatched case-control study design was conducted from January 1 to April 26, 2019. A total of 698 participants (228 cases and 47

Pemphigus Vulgaris With Esophageal Involvement in an Atopic Child Successfully Treated With Dupilumab.

We report the case of a 3-year-old boy who was diagnosed with childhood pemphigus vulgaris having developed oral lesions, gastrointestinal symptoms with esophageal involvement, and failure to thrive. He had a markedly increased total serum IgE level and peripheral blood eosinophilia. The pemphigus was recalcitrant to conventional therapies and, based on the coexisting characteristics of Th2 immune deviation, he was treated with dupilumab and has had sustained clinical improvement since starting treatment. The case illustrates the importance of recognizing pemphigus vulgaris in childhood, consi

Blood-Based Biomarkers for Eosinophilic Esophagitis and Concomitant Atopic Diseases: A Look into the Potential of Extracellular Vesicles.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, Th2-inflammatory disease of the esophagus that can severely affect food intake. Currently, diagnosis and assessing response to treatment of EoE is highly invasive and requires endoscopy with esophageal biopsies. Finding non-invasive and accurate biomarkers is important for improving patient well-being. Unfortunately, EoE is usually accompanied by other atopies, which make it difficult to identify specific biomarkers. Providing an update of circulating EoE biomarkers and concomitant atopies is therefore timely. This review summarizes the current know

Supplement Individual Article: The Importance of a Healthy Skin Barrier From the Cradle to the Grave Using Ceramide-Containing Cleansers and Moisturizers: A Review and Consensus.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory skin disorders compromise skin barrier health. Early and daily skincare use aims to maintain a life-long healthy skin barrier. Racial/ethnic and age variations in skin barrier properties, cultural differences, and clinical presentation of the inflammatory skin disorder influence the choice of treatment and skin care. Ceramide-containing skin care may play a role in restoring and maintaining a healthy skin barrier. METHODS: A panel of 6 dermatologists met to develop consensus statements based on their 8 previous publications on promoting skin barrier health throughou

An unexpected allergic skin reaction to peppermint oil capsules.

Peppermint oil capsules are prescribed to manage abdominal colic and distension, a common complaint in postcaesarean section patients. Arachis (peanut) oil is contained within one frequently prescribed peppermint formulation: Colpermin. This ingredient is contraindicated in patients with peanut and soya allergy; however, this is not stated in the side effects or contraindications section of the British National Formulary, or present on the medication packaging. A postpartum woman in her early 30s had an unexpected allergic reaction to the capsules, in the form of a generalised body rash, fortu

Diagnostic approach and grading scheme for canine allergic conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: In humans, allergic conjunctivitis is a well described disease. In contrast, allergic conjunctivitis has not received much attention from the veterinary community so far. Canine allergic conjunctivitis (cAC) is one of the possible manifestations associated with canine atopic dermatitis (cAD), being often underdiagnosed and undertreated. Our aim is to contribute to disease characterization and clinical stagingfor cAC severity. RESULTS: A retrospective observational study including 122 dogs that underwent a complete ophthalmological and dermatological examinations and diagnosed with

Anti-Inflammatory Extract from Soil Algae Chromochloris zofingiensis Targeting TNFR/NF-κB Signaling at Different Levels.

Inflammatory skin diseases, including atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis, are increasing in populations worldwide. The treatment of patients with AD and other forms of skin inflammation is mainly based on the use of topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors, which can cause significant side effects with long-term use. Therefore, there is a great need for the development of more effective and less toxic anti-inflammatory agents suitable for the treatment of chronic skin lesions. Here, we screened a number of strains from the ASIB 505 terrestrial algae collection and identified a green

Dissecting the Roles of Innate Cells in the Skin and Intractable Skin Diseases.

The skin is not merely a physical barrier but also an active immunological interface, exposed to various external stimuli including microbes. Over the recent years, our laboratory has defined hair follicles as control towers that regulates immune cells residing in the skin. Hair follicles produce chemokines and cytokines that are crucial for the localization and tissue-residency of immune cells including the Langerhans cells, resident memory T cells, and innate lymphoid cells. We also discovered that disruption of the ADAM17-EGF receptor axis and ADAM10-Notch signaling axis leads to dysbiosis

Integrated bioinformatic analysis of gene expression profiling data to identify combinatorial biomarkers in inflammatory skin disease.

Selection of appropriate biomarker to identify inflammatory skin diseases is complicated by the involvement of thousands of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) across multiple cell types and organs. This study aimed to identify combinatorial biomarkers in inflammatory skin diseases. From one gene expression microarray profiling dataset, we performed bioinformatic analyses on dataset from lesional skin biopsies of patients with inflammatory skin diseases (atopic dermatitis [AD], contact eczema [KE], lichen planus [Li], psoriasis vulgaris [Pso]) and healthy controls to identify the involved pa

Alterations in mental health and quality of life in patients with skin disorders: a narrative review.

The presence of lesions in visible areas of skin may cause emotional troubles in patients, including low self-worth, embarrassment, sorrow, and social isolation. Those alterations may predispose to psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, and even suicidal ideation, severely affecting patients' health state and quality of life (QoL). In this article, we focus on dermatologic patients that present with secondary mental health alterations. Thus, we offer a detailed description of mental disorders observed in patients with acne vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, ichthyosis, vitilig
