The effects on tACS and tRNS on language function: A literature review.

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) techniques are promising noninvasive tools for modulating language-related neural processes. While transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been well studied, transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) and transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) remain less characterized. This review synthesizes findings from 11 studies (394 participants) investigating the effects of tACS and tRNS on language processing in neurotypical individuals. Both techniques significantly enhance phonological and semantic processing, with a moderate overal

Power-efficient ramped stimulation in a fully implantable cochlear implant.

Cochlear implants (CIs) are among the most established neuromodulation devices, providing auditory perception through electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve. While conventional stimulation strategies rely on symmetric biphasic rectangular pulses, alternative pulse shapes may offer improvements in neural activation and energy efficiency-particularly for fully implantable CI systems where power consumption is a key limitation. In this study, we investigate the efficacy of anodic-first ramped biphasic pulse shapes compared to conventional anodic-first rectangular pulses, using a custom-desi

Motor representation of rhythmic jaw movements in the amygdala of guinea pigs.

OBJECTIVE: The areas of the amygdala contributing to rhythmic jaw movements and the movement patterns induced remain unknown. Therefore, the present study investigated the areas of the amygdala contributing to rhythmic jaw movements using repetitive electrical microstimulation techniques. DESIGN: Experiments were performed on head-restrained guinea pigs under ketamine-xylazine anesthesia. EMG activities in the masseter and digastric muscles and jaw movements were recorded. Short- and long-train electrical microstimulations of the amygdala were performed and the patterns of jaw movements induc

Case report: Ultrasound-guided multi-site electroacupuncture stimulation for a patient with spinal cord injury.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury causes permanent neurological deficits, which have devastating physical, social, and vocational consequences for patients and their families. Traditional Chinese medicine uses acupuncture to treat neuropathic pain and improve nerve conduction velocity. This treatment can also reduce peripheral nerve injury joint contracture and muscle atrophy in affected patients. And it's got a remarkable restoration when electrical stimulation therapy on impaired peripheral nerves in animal models and clinical trials. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 48-year-old woman was hit by a heavy

Wearable sensor-driven responsive deep brain stimulation for essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective surgical therapy for individuals with essential tremor (ET). However, DBS operates continuously, resulting in adverse effects such as postural instability or dysarthria. Continuous DBS (cDBS) also presents important practical issues including limited battery life of the implantable neurostimulator (INS). Collectively, these shortcomings impact optimal therapeutic benefit in ET. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the study was to establish a physiology-driven responsive DBS (rDBS) system to provide targeted and personalized therapy based on electrom

Deep Brain Stimulation in KMT2B-Related Dystonia: Case Report and Review of the Literature With Special Emphasis on Dysarthria and Speech.

Objective: KMT2B-related dystonia is a progressive childhood-onset movement disorder, evolving from lower-limb focal dystonia into generalized dystonia. With increasing age, children frequently show prominent laryngeal or facial dystonia manifesting in dysarthria. Bilateral deep brain stimulation of the globus pallidus internus (GPi-DBS) is reported to be an efficient therapeutic option. Especially improvement of dystonia and regaining of independent mobility is commonly described, but detailed information about the impact of GPi-DBS on dysarthria and speech is scarce. Methods: We report the 1

Brain stimulation rewarding experience attenuates neonatal clomipramine-induced adulthood anxiety by reversal of pathological changes in the amygdala.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with enhanced anxiety and reduced reward processing leading to impaired cognitive flexibility. These pathological changes during depression are accompanied by dysfunctional hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and its impaired regulation by the amygdala. Notably, the electrical stimulation of brain reward areas produces an antidepressant effect in both MDD patients and animal models of depression. However, the effects of chronic electrical self-stimulation of lateral hypothalamus - medial forebrain bundle (LH-MFB) on depression-associated anxi

Smart Baroreceptor Activation Therapy Strikingly Attenuates Blood Pressure Variability in Hypertensive Rats With Impaired Baroreceptor.

Increased blood pressure (BP) variability (BPV) is an independent risk factor of cardiovascular events among hypertensive patients. The arterial baroreceptor reflex is a powerful regulator of BP and attenuates BPV via a sympathetic negative feedback control. Conventional baroreceptor activation therapy (cBAT) electrically stimulates the carotid baroreceptors with constant stimulation parameters. While cBAT lowers BP, it does not mount a pressure feedback mechanism. We hypothesized that baroreceptor activation therapy with a pressure feedback system (smart BAT [sBAT]) is able to reduce BPV as w

Variation of Finger Activation Patterns Post-stroke Through Non-invasive Nerve Stimulation.

Purpose: A transcutaneous proximal nerve stimulation technique utilizing an electrode grid along the nerve bundles has previously shown flexible activation of multiple fingers. This case study aimed to further demonstrate the ability of this novel stimulation technique to induce various finger grasp patterns in a stroke survivor. Methods: An individual with chronic hemiplegia and severe hand impairment was recruited. Electrical stimulation was delivered to different pairs of an electrode grid along the ulnar and median nerves to selectively activate different finger flexor muscles, with an aut

Biventricular pacing in patients with Tetralogy of Fallot: non-invasive epicardial mapping and clinical impact.

INTRODUCTION: Patients who have undergone repair of Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) often present with right bundle branch block. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with right ventricular (RV) or biventricular (BiV) stimulation has been proposed as a modality to correct electrical abnormalities and improve cardiac contractility in patients with repaired TOF. We aimed to 1) compare ventricular electrical activation in adults with repaired TOF during RV versus BiV stimulation, using a non-invasive epicardial mapping system, and 2) examine the clinical mid-term effects of BiV resynchronization. Glutamate receptor blockade in the rostral ventromedial medulla reduces the force of multisegmental motor responses to supramaximal noxious stimuli.

The rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) has been established as part of a descending pain-modulatory pathway. While the RVM has been shown to modulate homosegmental nociceptive reflexes such as tail flick or hindpaw withdrawal, it is not known what role the RVM plays in modulating the magnitude of multisegmental, organized motor responses elicited by noxious stimuli. Using local blockade of glutamate receptors with the non-specific glutamate receptor antagonist kynurenate (known to selectively block nociceptive facilitatory ON-cells), we tested the hypothesis that the RVM facilitates the magnit

Causes of excitation-induced muscle cell damage in isometric contractions: mechanical stress or calcium overload?

Prolonged or unaccustomed exercise leads to muscle cell membrane damage, detectable as release of the intracellular enzyme lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH). This is correlated to excitation-induced influx of Ca2+, but it cannot be excluded that mechanical stress contributes to the damage. We here explore this question using N-benzyl-p-toluene sulfonamide (BTS), which specifically blocks muscle contraction. Extensor digitorum longus muscles were prepared from 4-wk-old rats and mounted on holders for isometric contractions. Muscles were stimulated intermittently at 40 Hz for 15-60 min or exposed

Dynamic laryngotracheal closure for aspiration: a preliminary report.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: An estimated 500,000 patients per year in the United States. are affected by stroke-related dysphagia. Approximately half experience aspiration, which can lead to pneumonia or death. Aspiration may result from many factors, including delayed transport of the bolus, faulty laryngeal elevation, and poor coordination or inappropriate timing of vocal cord closure. Interventions carried out to protect the lungs are usually irreversible, destructive to the upper airway, and rarely prevent the need for enteral tube feeding. STUDY DESIGN: We present a report of the first implan

Central neural circuits for the light-mediated reflexive control of choroidal blood flow in the pigeon eye: a laser Doppler study.

Electrical stimulation in pigeons of the input from the medial subdivision of the nucleus of Edinger-Westphal (EWM) to the choroidal neurons of the ipsilateral ciliary ganglion, which themselves have input to the choroidal blood vessels of the ipsilateral eye, increases choroidal blood flow (ChBF). Since the EWM receives input from the contralateral suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which in turn receives contralateral retinal input, the present study sought to determine if activation of the SCN by microstimulation or by retinal illumination of the contralateral eye would also yield increases in

Benefits of aortic and pulmonary counterpulsation using dynamic latissimus dorsi myoplasty.

BACKGROUND: Intraaortic and pulmonary artery counterpulsation are useful techniques to support circulation during either left or right ventricular dysfunction. Electrically stimulated skeletal muscles wrapped around the aorta, used as means of cardiac failure treatment, have proved to be an effective method of handling experimental left ventricular failure. In this article we report an induced cardiac failure model in acute open chest dogs and describe the hemodynamic improvement of simultaneous aortic and pulmonary artery counterpulsation. METHODS: This was achieved with a bilateral latissim

Calcitonin Gene-related Peptide Causes Intraspinal Spreading of Substance P Released by Peripheral Stimulation.

Experiments were performed in barbiturate-anaesthetized, spinalized cats to investigate the effect of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) on the spatial distribution of immunoreactive substance P (ir-SP) in the spinal cord released by electrical nerve stimulation and noxious mechanical stimuli. The presence of ir-SP was assessed with microprobes bearing C-terminus-directed antibodies to SP. CGRP was microinjected into the grey matter of the spinal cord near microprobe insertion sites at depths of 2500, 2000, 1500 and 1000 microm using minute amounts (in total 0.2 - 0.5 microl) of Ringer sol

Effect of intrathecal amino acid receptor antagonists on basal blood pressure and pressor responses to brainstem stimulation in normotensive and hypertensive rats.

The importance of spinal cord amino acid receptors in the regulation of blood pressure was investigated in normotensive (Wistar Kyoto, WKY), spontaneously hypertensive (SHR), and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive (SPR) rats. Also investigated was the possible role of these spinal cord receptors in mediating pressor changes evoked by electrical stimulation of two separate areas of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) containing different neuronal populations, either the adrenaline-containing C1 area or the serotonin-containing B3 area. Intrathecal administration of the amino acid rece
