EEG effective connectivity during the first year of life mirrors brain synaptogenesis, myelination, and early right hemisphere predominance.

INTRODUCTION: The maturation of electroencephalogram (EEG) effective connectivity in healthy infants during the first year of life is described. METHODS: Participants: A cross-sectional sample of 125 healthy at-term infants, from 0 to 12 months of age, underwent EEG in a state of quiet sleep. PROCEDURES: The EEG primary currents at the source were described with the sLoreta method. An unmixing algorithm was applied to reduce the leakage, and the isolated effective coherence, a direct and directed measurement of information flow, was calculated. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Initially, the highest

Diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment using EEG and Recurrent Neural Networks.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the main cause of dementia and Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a prodromal stage of AD whose early detection is considered crucial as it can contribute in slowing the progression of AD. In our study we attempted to classify a subject into AD, MCI, or Healthy Control (HC) groups with the use of electroencephalogram (EEG) data. Due to the time-series nature of EEG we exper-imented with the powerful recurrent neural network (RNN) classifiers and more specifically with models including basic or bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) modules. The EEG signals from

Slow-Wave EEG Activity Correlates with Impaired Inhibitory Control in Internet Addiction Disorder.

Impaired inhibitory control is a core feature of internet addiction disorder (IAD). It is therefore of interest to determine the neurophysiological markers associated with it. The present study aimed to find such biomarkers with a resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG). We specifically used scores on the Chinese Internet Addiction Scale revised edition (CIAS-R) to divide 46 participants into two groups: the IAD group (>53, n = 23) and control group (<46, n = 23). Both behavioral aspects (Go/NoGo responses and impulsivity) and EEG were measured in the lab. The results suggest that the IAD gro

Borderline personality features and altered social feedback processing in emerging adults: An EEG study.

The goal of this study was to examine social feedback processing among emerging adults with borderline personality features (BPF). Participants (N = 118; 66.9% female) completed ratings of BPF and a computerized peer interaction task designed to measure processing of rejection and acceptance cues at the neurophysiological (i.e., electroencephalogram [EEG]), behavioral, and self-report levels. When covarying symptoms of depression and social anxiety, greater BPF were associated with heightened neural processing of social acceptance cues, accounting for reactivity to neutral and rejection cues,

Online improvisation training, hybrid improvisation training and on-site improvisation training; are they the same?

BACKGROUND: Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan in December 2019, lifestyle has been changing to an online-based learning and working environment rather than on-site, and improvisation training is no exception. However, no research compares the efficacy of online versus on-site training. Although we believed that the most effective way to learn improvisation is an on-site format, it is important to explore how format differences can affect learners. METHOD: We offer three types of training such as on-site training (n = 6) (Consisting of 1 female with age ≥40 and <50, and 5 males with ages

Sleep macro- and micro-structure in autoimmune encephalitis: single case report from the subacute phase of the disease to the follow-up.

Sleep disorders are frequently described in autoimmune encephalitis (AE); however, data on sleep texture are fragmentary. We analyzed the polysomnography of a woman affected by AE, and we performed cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) scoring during the subacute phase of the disease and at follow-up. The first polysomnography showed deviations both at macro and microstructure levels, with a marked reduction of CAP rate compare to healthy sleepers (20.8% vs 33%). After 6-months sleep macrostructure improved, whilst CAP parameters remained abnormal. This is the first polysomnographic analysis, compr

Premenstrual syndrome is associated with an altered spontaneous electroencephalographic delta/beta power ratio across the menstrual cycle.

Premenstrual syndrome is associated with altered spontaneous brain activity in the late luteal phase, but the fluctuation patterns of brain activity throughout the menstrual cycle have not been revealed. Furthermore, it is also unknown whether the altered spontaneous brain activity during the whole menstrual cycle is further associated with their habitual use of maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. Based on the two reasons, electroencephalogram data and cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire from 32 women with high premenstrual symptoms (HPMS) and 33 women with low premenstrual sympt

Treatment effects on event-related EEG potentials and oscillations in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD) is the most diffuse neurodegenerative disorder belonging to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia in old persons. This disease is provoked by an abnormal accumulation of amyloid-beta and tauopathy proteins in the brain. Very recently, the first disease-modifying drug has been licensed with reserve (i.e., Aducanumab). Therefore, there is a need to identify and use biomarkers probing the neurophysiological underpinnings of human cognitive functions to test the clinical efficacy of that drug. In this regard, event-related electroencephalographic potential

Epileptic negative myoclonus in herpes simplex virus encephalitis.

Epileptic negative myoclonus (ENM) is a rarely reported clinical seizure semiology. It is defined as a brief interruption of tonic muscle activity in association with an epileptiform discharge on the EEG (spike or sharp wave) without preceding myoclonia. The diagnosis of ENM requires a polygraphic recording with EEG and surface EMG electrodes covering the affected body part(s), while the muscles have tonic activity. Historically, ENM has been reported in a variety of chronic epilepsy syndromes such as benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes, progressive myoclonic epilepsy syndromes, symptom

Seizure Prediction in Genetic Rat Models of Absence Epilepsy: Improved Performance through Multiple-Site Cortico-Thalamic Recordings Combined with Machine Learning.

Seizure prediction is the grand challenge of epileptology. However, effort was devoted to prediction of focal seizures, while generalized seizures were regarded as stochastic events. Long-lasting local field potential (LFP) recordings containing several hundred generalized spike and wave discharges (SWDs), acquired at eight locations in the cortico-thalamic system of absence epileptic rats, were iteratively analyzed in all possible combinations of either two or three recording sites, by a wavelet-based algorithm, calculating the product of the wavelet-energy signaling increases in synchronicit

Assessing the landscape of STXBP1-related disorders in 534 individuals.

Disease-causing variants in STXBP1 are among the most common genetic causes of neurodevelopmental disorders. However, the phenotypic spectrum in STXBP1-related disorders is wide and clear correlations between variant type and clinical features have not been observed so far. Here, we harmonized clinical data across 534 individuals with STXBP1-related disorders and analysed 19 973 derived phenotypic terms, including phenotypes of 253 individuals previously unreported in the scientific literature. The overall phenotypic landscape in STXBP1-related disorders is characterized by neurodevelopmental

Epilepsy with myoclonic absences: a case series highlighting clinical heterogeneity and surgical management.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy with myoclonic absences is a rare epilepsy syndrome with distinct features and high rates of drug resistance. Identifying this syndrome may help guide treatment decisions. We highlight clinical heterogeneity in this case series and two cases in which corpus callosotomy was performed. METHODS: Medical records were reviewed between 2017 and 2021 to identify demographics, comorbidities, age at onset, EEG findings, diagnostic evaluations, seizure semiologies, seizure frequency, anti-seizure medications, diet therapy and surgical treatments in patients with myoclonic absences.

Management of status epilepticus: a narrative review.

Status epilepticus causes prolonged or repetitive seizures that, if left untreated, can lead to neuronal injury, severe disability, coma and death in paediatric and adult populations. While convulsive status epilepticus can be diagnosed using clinical features alone, non-convulsive status epilepticus requires confirmation by electroencephalogram. Early seizure control remains key in preventing the complications of status epilepticus. This is especially true for convulsive status epilepticus, which has stronger evidence supporting the benefit of treatment on outcomes. When status epilepticus be

Neonatal seizures treatment based on conventional multichannel EEG monitoring: an overview of therapeutic options.

INTRODUCTION: Seizures are the main neurological emergency during the neonatal period and are mostly acute and focal. The prognosis mainly depends on the underlying etiology. Conventional multichannel video-electroencephalographic (cEEG) monitoring is the gold standard for diagnosis, but treatment remains a challenge. AREAS COVERED: This review, based on PubMed search over the last 4 decades, focuses on the current treatment options for neonatal seizures based on cEEG monitoring. There is still no consensus on seizure therapy, owing to poor scientific evidence. Traditionally, the first-line t

A neurotherapy protocol to remediate cognitive deficits after adjuvant chemotherapy: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer is undeniably effective in increasing survival rates but many breast cancer survivors (BCS) exhibit side effects including nausea, fatigue, stress, and neurocognitive deficits, known as "chemobrain." This pilot study explored how neurotherapy, or EEG biofeedback, a non-pharmacological approach, improved neurocognitive, behavioral, and neurophysiological deficits associated with BCS who underwent chemotherapy. METHODS: Subjects underwent 18 sessions of EEG biofeedback training, in which audio and visual feedback occurred with successful shift

Automated diagnosis of coronary artery disease using scalogram-based tensor decomposition with heart rate signals.

Early identification of coronary artery disease (CAD) can facilitate timely clinical intervention and save lives. This study aims to develop a machine learning framework that uses tensor analysis on heart rate (HR) signals to automate the CAD detection task. A third-order tensor representing a time-frequency relationship is constructed by fusing scalograms as vertical slices of the tensor. Each scalogram is computed from the considered time frame of a given HR signal. The derived scalogram represents the heterogeneity of data as a two-dimensional map. These two-dimensional maps are stacked one
