Association between exposure to interpersonal violence and social isolation, and the adoption of unhealthy weight control practices.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between interpersonal violence, social isolation and unhealthy weight control practices. METHODS: Data on a representative sample of 9th grade Brazilian adolescents from public and private schools (n = 102,072), taken from the National School Health Survey (PeNSE, 2015) were used. The exposures were interpersonal violence (family physical violence, body appearance-related bullying and bullying for the other reasons) and social isolation. The outcomes were unhealthy weight control practices: self-induced vomiting/take laxatives and take any diet pills, pow

Effect of Vanadyl Rosiglitazone, a New Insulin-Mimetic Vanadium Complexes, on Glucose Homeostasis of Diabetic Mice.

Diabetes has been cited as the most challenging health problem in the twenty-first century. Accordingly, it is urgent to develop a new type of efficient and low-toxic antidiabetic medication. Since vanadium compounds have insulin-mimetic and potential hypoglycemic activities for type 1 and type 2 diabetes, a new trend has been developed using vanadium and organic ligands to form a new compound in order to increase the intestinal absorption and reduce the toxicity of vanadium compound. In the current investigation, a new organic vanadium compounds, vanadyl rosiglitazone, was synthesized and det

A mixed-methods study on factors influencing prenatal weight gain in ethnic-minority women.

INTRODUCTION: Gaining too much weight in pregnancy is associated with perinatal complications and increases the risks of future obesity for both women and their infants. Unfortunately, women enrolled in intervention trials have seen little improvement in adherence to prenatal weight gain recommendations compared to women receiving standard prenatal care. Therefore, the purpose of this descriptive mixed-methods study was to explore factors related to excessive weight gain in pregnancy. METHODS: Nonpregnant nulliparous women, currently pregnant women, and postpartum women (N = 43) were recruite

A cognitive- behavioral therapeutic program for patients with obesity and binge eating disorder: short- and long- term follow-up data of a prospective study.

The goal of this study is to investigate the efficacy of a manualized cognitive-behavioral therapeutic (CBT) approach for patients with obesity and binge eating disorder (BED) on the short and longer term. A prospective study without a control group consisting of three measurements (a baseline measurement and two follow-up assessments up to 5 years after the start of the CBT treatment) was used. A total of 56 patients with obesity and BED (age = 39.7 ± 10-9 years; body mass index [BMI] = 38.5 ± 8.3 kg/m(2)) participated in the study. BMI, number of binges per week, general psychological well-b

The role of early life stress in development of the anterior limb of the internal capsule in nonhuman primates.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the anterior limb of the internal capsule (ALIC) may be effective in treating depression. Parental verbal abuse has been linked to decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) of white matter and reduced FA correlated with depression and anxiety scores. Utilizing a nonhuman primate model of mood and anxiety disorders following disrupted mother-infant attachment, we examined whether adverse rearing conditions lead to white matter impairment of the ALIC. We examined white matter integrity using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) on a 3T-MRI. Twenty-one adult male Bonnet macaq

The role of saliva in dental erosion and a prosthetic approach to treatment: a case report.

AIM: The aim of this report is to describe the relationship of some salivary parameters to dental erosion resulting from excessive citric acid consumption and present a description of a prosthetic approach used to restore the damaged dentition of a patient with severe erosion. BACKGROUND: The high consumption of dietary sources of acids can lead to erosion or the excessive wear of dental hard tissues. Erosion may be modified by salivary parameters such as flow rate, pH, and buffering capacity. Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) restorations and composite resin veneers can be used successfully to

Health risk behaviors in adolescents with chronic conditions.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the frequency of risk behaviors and to measure the extent of co-occurrence of these behaviors in chronically ill and healthy adolescents. METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2002 Swiss Multicenter Adolescent Survey on Health database, a nationally representative survey of 7548 adolescents in postmandatory school aged 16 to 20 years. There were 760 subjects who reported a chronic illness and/or a disability. The comparison group consisted of 6493 subjects who answered negatively to both questions. We defined 8 risk behaviors: daily smoking, a

Robust food anticipatory circadian rhythms in rats with complete ablation of the thalamic paraventricular nucleus.

Rats can anticipate a fixed daily mealtime by entrainment of a circadian timekeeping mechanism anatomically separate from the light-entrainable circadian pacemaker located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Neural substrates of this food-entrainable circadian system have not yet been fully elucidated. A role for the thalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVT) is suggested by observations that scheduled feeding synchronizes daily rhythms of glucose utilization and immediate early gene and circadian clock gene expression in this area. One study has reported absence of food anticipatory circadian activit

Prevalence of bulimic behaviors and trends in eating attitudes among Turkish late adolescents.

The eating attitudes and the prevalence of bulimic behaviors in a group of 300 late adolescents were investigated using the key questions from the Bulimia Investigatory Test, Edinburgh (BITE), and additional questions. Only four subjects (1.3%) scored above the cut-off point on the BITE, and prevalence rates of males and females were the same. Results showed that higher symptom scale scores were associated with the emergence of binge eating behavior and high energy intake. Females were less likely than males to see themselves as normal eaters and more likely to feel "miserable" when they binge

Healthy eating, exercise, and weight: impressions of sexual minority women.

Obesity is a risk factor for multiple disease outcomes, including cancer and cardiovascular disease. A healthy diet and physically active lifestyle can prevent obesity. Sexual orientation is an important demographic factor that has been suggested to affect engagement in health-related behaviors, and interventions developed for the general population of women are likely to be less effective in assisting sexual minority women to make healthy choices. We conducted seven focus groups with sexual minority women (i.e., lesbians and bisexual women) to explore issues, including barriers and motivation

Predictors of asphyxiation risk in adults with intellectual disabilities and dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Adults with learning disabilities referred for assessment of their eating and drinking are frequently reported to cough and choke when eating and drinking. The research literature investigating dysphagia has often overlooked asphyxiation risk, highlighting coughing and choking as indicators of aspiration only. This is a notable oversight due to the prevalence of asphyxia as a cause of mortality in this population. AIM: This study aims to identify the physiological and environmental factors that predict asphyxiation risk in adults with intellectual disabilities and dysphagia. METH

M(3) muscarinic acetylcholine receptor plays a critical role in parasympathetic control of salivation in mice.

The M(1) and M(3) subtypes are the major muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the salivary gland and M(3) is reported to be more abundant. However, despite initial reports of salivation abnormalities in M(3)-knockout (M(3)KO) mice, it is still unclear which subtype is functionally relevant in physiological salivation. In the present study, salivary secretory function was examined using mice lacking specific subtype(s) of muscarinic receptor. The carbachol-induced [Ca(2+)](i) increase was markedly impaired in submandibular gland cells from M(3)KO mice and completely absent in those from M(1)/M

Ankyloglossia: assessment, incidence, and effect of frenuloplasty on the breastfeeding dyad.

OBJECTIVE: Ankyloglossia in breastfeeding infants can cause ineffective latch, inadequate milk transfer, and maternal nipple pain, resulting in untimely weaning. The question of whether the performance of a frenuloplasty benefits the breastfeeding dyad in such a situation remains controversial. We wished to 1) define significant ankyloglossia, 2) determine the incidence in breastfeeding infants, and 3) measure the effectiveness of the frenuloplasty procedure with respect to solving specific breastfeeding problems in mother-infant dyads who served as their own controls. METHODS: We examined 27

Long-term retention of tolerance to amphetamine hypophagia following cessation of drug injections and feeding tests.

According to the instrumental learning model, tolerance to amphetamine hypophagia involves learning to suppress stereotyped movements that interfere with feeding. If both drug injections and feeding tests are then suspended, learning should be retained and no loss of tolerance should occur. However, previous studies have only assessed the retention of tolerance for 3-4 weeks. In the present study, retention intervals of 4-31 weeks were used. Rats were given daily injections of amphetamine (2 mg/kg) and access to milk for 30 min until tolerance developed to drug-induced hypophagia. Yoked contro
