An unusual case of an anorectal fistula presenting with hip pain and extensive lower limb muscle wasting in a patient with Crohn's disease is reported. This report emphasizes the important role of a thorough history, a complete physical examination, and a thorough search for evaluating such cases. Any progressive local irritation and pain in a Crohn's disease patient may indicate possible fistulous involvement. Nonspecific laboratory findings such as leukocytosis, anemia, decreased albumin level, and thrombocytosis may be considered as supportive indicators. Barium contrast studies and enhance…

12 cases of the labyrinthine fistulae from 88 patients operated due to chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma were presented. All patients underwent canal wall dawn technique. In 3 cases the radical ear operation was performed. Other 9 patients were operated by modified radical ear operation with simultaneous tympanoplasty. The frequency and location of labyrinthine fistulae were estimated in chronic otitis media based on own material and literature. The different operating methods were analysed and their influence on the inner ear function was emphasised.

Although the use of rigid fixation techniques has become widespread for the treatment of mandible fractures, indications still remain for th … pin fixation, describe the procedure, and present a case report of a patient with parotid salivary fistula secondary to the placement of external pin fixation.

We report a case of portal hypertension associated with a non-traumatic arteriovenous fistula, presenting with bleeding duodenal varices. The patient was admitted for melaena. Emergency endoscopy showed oesophageal varices with no signs of recent bleeding and with no blood in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Arteriography of the coeliac axis and superior mesenteric artery failed to detect any bleeding source. Endoscopy was repeated because of persistent bleeding and revealed active bleeding from varices in the distal duodenum. The patient underwent surgery and a large paraduodenal varicose ve…

An 85-year-old female, who had had a total hip replacement for osteoarthritis in 1985, presented with gross hematuria in June 1995. Cystoscopy revealed a non-papillary sessile tumor in the right side wall of the urinary bladder with a crateriform opening on the top. Computed tomographic (CT) scan and excretory urography demonstrated a fistulous communication between the bladder and the acetabular bed filled with cement. The biopsy of the mass lesion suggested inflammatory granuloma with powdered cement. Since the lesion was composed of internal fistula, and was not accompanied with infection, …

A sudden-onset chyluria after trauma was evaluated giving evidence of a lymphatic-urinary fistula in the right kidney. Treatment with somatostatin normalized the urinary pattern and the result was maintained even after the discontinuation of the therapy.

Direct carotid-cavernous sinus fistulas that present with signs and symptoms contralateral to the arterial supply of the fistulas are not uncommon. We present a thoroughly documented case of a dural-cavernous sinus fistula with symptoms exclusively contralateral to the arterial source, a rarer entity. The patient presented with a red, proptotic right eye and a history of transient horizontal diplopia and a "feeling of fullness" in that eye. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and orbits performed at another hospital had shown no abnormalities. Carotid angiography performed on the rig…

Primary aortocolic fistula is a rare complication of infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm. Many case reports have been published along with small series but the incidence of primary aortocolic fistulae remains unknown. In contrast, the incidence of secondary aortocolic fistulae increases approximately up to 1.5-4.0% as a result of rapid evolution of aorto-iliac vascular reconstruction with prosthetic grafts. The prognosis of aortocolic fistulae mainly depends on the time interval between first clinical manifestations and operative treatment. Loss of time by detailed preoperative investigations…

Coronary artery fistula (CAF) is an abnormal communication between a coronary artery and a cardiac chamber, great vessel, or other vascular structures. The presence of the fistula is usually identified by angiography. In this paper, the diagnosis of left coronary artery-right ventricle fistula was made by color Doppler before angiography? and it was confirmed by surgery. Color Doppler flow imaging is a non-invasive method which can reveal the proximal dilatation, the course and the draining site of CAF.

The internal jugular vein is increasingly being used as a temporary route for dual-lumen hemodialysis catheter placement. It is thought to be safer than the subclavian or femoral vein sites. It is important, however, to point out that this route can also be associated with serious complications. Herein we describe a case of right common carotid artery fistula as a complication of the insertion of a polyurethane double-lumen hemodialysis catheter into the right internal jugular vein. A review of the literature on traumatic complications associated with central venous cannulation is also present…

The author reports a case of chronic otitis with cholesteatoma complicated by a fistula of the lateral semicircular canal and a stapedo-ovalar ankylosis, probably of otosclerotic origin, in which the decision to take advantage of the fistula to create conditions similar to those generally produced by labyrinthine fenestration allowed virtual functional recovery of the patient's hearing. The case illustrates how, with a ploy of this kind, certain intrinsically negative features may actually turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

A 22 year old man who sustained a severe closed head injury after a high speed motor car accident underwent routine placement of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) for feeding purposes. Nine days after its insertion an enterocutaneous fistula was diagnosed around the PEG tube. A loop of mid-jejunum had been transfixed during the insertion of the PEG.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare patency and complication rates between basilic vein and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) for brachial arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) for long-term hemodialysis.
METHODS: All basilic vein and PTFE brachial AVF constructed between March 1988 and April 1993 were retrospectively reviewed. After construction of life-tables, log-rank testing was used to compare the primary patency rate of basilic vein AVF (n = 59) with the primary and secondary patency rates of PTFE AVF (n = 47). Complication rates were calculated for each type of fistula and compared by us…
