Expectations and experiences of gamete donors and donor-conceived adults searching for genetic relatives using DNA linking through a voluntary register.

STUDY QUESTION: What are the experiences of donor-conceived adults and donors who are searching for a genetic link through the use of a DNA-based voluntary register service? SUMMARY ANSWER: Donor-conceived adults and donors held positive beliefs about their search and although some concerns in relation to finding a genetically linked relative were reported, these were not a barrier to searching. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Research with donor-conceived people has consistently identified their interest in learning about-and in some cases making contact with-their donor and other genetic relatives.

Turkey Coronavirus: Current Knowledge, Critical Gaps, and Future Directions in Transmission Biology and Pathogenesis.

Turkey coronavirus (TCoV) is an enteric gammacoronavirus that has become a re-emerging pathogen of major economic importance in commercial turkey production. First identified in the 1970s, TCoV continues to circulate endemically and periodically resurges as a primary viral contributor to poult enteritis complex (PEC) and poult enteritis mortality syndrome (PEMS). The continuous need to understand TCoV is highlighted by its severe enterotropism, quick fecal-oral transmission and capacity to propagate covertly among older turkeys and spillover hosts like chickens. Despite more than fifty years o

Mapping of plant-fungal interactions on agriculture perception: a bibliometric analysis and systematic review.

In nature, plants are always destined to interact with fungi. Thus, plant-fungal interactions are one of the unavoidable fields of study, particularly for agronomists. Fungi interact with plants in different lifestyles, pathogenic and symbiotic. Pathogenic relationships have adverse effects, causing devastating diseases in plants, while symbiotic interactions provide numerous benefits, promoting the growth and development of plants. The intricate relationship between fungi and plants has been the subject of extensive research, especially in the tropics, where there is a higher plant diversity

Evolutionary and phylogenetic insights from global canine astrovirus genomes.

Through a comprehensive analysis of the complete genomes of 74 global CaAstV strains, this study systematically untangles their evolutionary relationships and driving mechanisms. The research establishes a population structure comprising three major groups (GI, GII, GIII), with the GIII group exhibiting the highest genetic diversity due to high-frequency recombination events and further subdividing into three subgroups (GIII-1, -2, -3). Recombination is confirmed as a key evolutionary driver, with 88.9% (16/18) of the events concentrated within the GIII group, and hotspots identified in the OR

Unveiling the Role of Sex Hormones and Reproductive Life Factors in Parkinson's Disease.

Biological sex shapes the risk, presentation, and progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). Nevertheless, the pathophysiological bases remain poorly understood, and sex-specific and hormonal factors are still insufficiently explored in both research and clinical practice. In the first part of this narrative review, we synthesize the most relevant evidence on sex-specific aspects of PD, including epidemiology, genetic bases, motor and non-motor features, and disease progression. We then explore sex-specific biological underpinnings revealed by translational, neuroimaging, and neurophysiological

Parkinson's disease biomarkers: bridging the gap between diagnosis and treatment.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder difficult to diagnose and treat because of the unavailability of reliable biomarkers. Symptoms like difficulty in movement and cognitive decline help doctors to diagnose the disease, which often appear only after significant damage has occurred in the brain. Recent research has led to the discovery of potential biomarkers, including biochemical changes in cerebrospinal fluid, genetic mutations, brain imaging findings, and markers of inflammation. Among these, α-synuclein, microRNAs, tau proteins, and inflammatory molecules show pr

Population-level genomic analysis of immunoglobulin loci variation in rhesus macaques reveals extensive germline diversity.

Rhesus macaques (RMs) are a vital model for studying human disease and are invaluable to preclinical vaccine research, particularly for the study of broadly neutralizing antibody responses. Such studies require robust genetic resources for antibody-encoding genes within the immunoglobulin (IG) loci. The complexity of the IG loci has historically made them challenging to characterize accurately. To address this, we developed experimental and computational methodologies to generate a collection of integrated antibody repertoire and long-read genomic sequencing data in 106 Indian-origin RMs. We c

Advances in hemostatic biomaterials: biomimetic strategies, nanotechnology, and smart therapeutics.

Bleeding, a critical complication in trauma, surgery, and conditions such as hemophilia, liver cirrhosis, and thrombocytopenia, often leads to shock or death. The limitations of traditional hemostatic methods-such as compression, suturing, and electrocautery-have prompted the development of advanced biomaterials. In modern research, intelligent, multi-mechanism systems have supplanted basic physical or chemical approaches. Biomimetic designs, such as platelet- and fibrin-inspired materials, alongside nanotechnology (e.g. nanoparticle carriers and electrospun fibers) and stimuli-responsive poly

Toward a holistic model of personalized and integrative medicine: The distinctive role of Persian medicine.

Modern personalized medicine is transforming healthcare by customizing treatments based on individual genetic, environmental, and lifestyle profiles. However, its application remains complex and often technologically intensive. Traditional systems, particularly Persian Medicine (PM), offer distinctive frameworks that align with and can enrich contemporary personalized care. Unlike other traditional systems, PM is grounded in a unique philosophical concept of health governed by Nature (Tabi'at)-an intrinsic healing force-and operationalized through the concept of temperament (Mizaj). In this ar

Convergent and Divergent Signaling Pathways in Cancer: A Dual-Axis Model for Adaptive Precision Oncology.

Despite significant advances in cancer research, the complexity of signaling pathways remains a major challenge in precision oncology. Tumors harbor a diverse array of genetic alterations; however, these often converge onto a limited set of core signaling pathways, notably RAS/RAF/MEK/ERK (MAPK), PI3K/AKT/mTOR (PAM), and Wnt/β-catenin. Concurrently, these pathways diverge extensively downstream, driving therapeutic resistance through mechanisms such as epithelial-mesenchymal transition, immune evasion, and metabolic reprogramming. Unlike previous literature that largely provides descriptive ac

Current therapeutic strategies in Parkinson's disease: Future perspectives.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons and the accumulation of misfolded α-synuclein. Current treatments, including dopaminergic medications and deep brain stimulation, provide symptomatic relief but do not halt disease progression. Recent advances in molecular research have enabled the development of disease-modifying strategies targeting key pathogenic mechanisms, such as α-synuclein aggregation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and genetic mutations, including LRRK2 and GBA1. In parallel, pluripotent stem cell-derived

Are we ready for a biological diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease?

The diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) is currently based on clinical criteria, centered on the characteristic motor syndrome. However, motor manifestations become evident only after a significant proportion of nigro-striatal dopaminergic neurons have already undergone neurodegeneration. The recent "NSD-ISS" and "SynNeurGe" research frameworks have proposed new biological diagnostic criteria focusing on α-synucleinopathy, neurodegeneration, and genetic biomarkers, independent of clinical manifestations. These proposals intend to detect the disease at a "biologically early phase" to foster a
