The capacity to identify and isolate lineage-specific progenitor cells from developing and mature tissues would enable the development of cell replacement therapies for disease treatment. The enteric nervous system (ENS) regulates important gut functions, including controlling peristaltic muscular contractions, and consists of interconnected ganglia containing neurons and glial cells. Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR), one of the most common and best understood diseases affecting the ENS, is characterized by absence of enteric ganglia from the distal gut due to defects in gut colonization by neura

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is an infrequent cause of infective endocarditis (IE) and usually involves native valves of the heart. It causes life-threatening events such as rupture of cardiac valve or cerebral or pulmonary embolism due to necrosis on the endocardial tissue involved by the bacteria. Antibiotic therapy without cardiac surgery or delayed cardiac surgery usually follows a fatal course in S. lugdunensis endocarditis. In this report the first case of S. lugdunensis endocarditis from Turkey was presented. A 37-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department with a 2-weeks histor

Otology & neurotology : official publication of the American Otological Society, American Neurotology Society [and] European Academy of Otology and Neurotology2008eng
OBJECTIVE: To assess patient satisfaction with vertigo control using intratympanic (IT) dexamethasone (12 mg/mL) for medically refractory unilateral Ménière's disease.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
SETTING: Tertiary referral neurotology clinic.
PATIENTS: One hundred twenty-nine subjects diagnosed with unilateral Ménière's disease still having vertigo despite medical therapy.
INTERVENTION: IT dexamethasone injections as needed to control vertigo attacks.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: A Kaplan-Meier time-to-event method was used to determine the rate of "survival," meaning sufficient satisfact

HISTORY: A 36 year-old man suffered from fever, fatigue, pleurodynia and precordial discomfort. His family physician suspected febrile tracheobronchitis and treated it with ampicillin for 5 days. Because symptoms persisted an ECG was done which suggested acute myocardial infarction. The patient underwent an emergency coronary angiography which excluded coronary artery disease and aortic dissection. Pericarditis was suspected and the patient put on aspirin, 500 mg/d. Because of persisting cardiac symptoms an echocardiography was performed which revealed systolic separation between epi- and peri

We describe a 73-year-old patient who had a subepidermal bullous eruption develop after a course of antibiotics, including vancomycin. The patient had deposits of IgA and IgG in the cutaneous basement membrane zone that were located on the dermal side of 1 M NaCl-treated autologous skin. By an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, the patient was found to have circulating IgG antibodies directed against type VII collagen, the target antigen of epidermolysis bullosa acquisita. Our observation expands the spectrum of immune-mediated subepidermal bullous skin eruptions precipitated by drugs and lend

There are few reports of transplacental infection by Salmonella typhi. A case of a primagravida at 26 weeks' gestation with severe S typhi gastroenteritis, sepsis, and disseminated intravascular coagulation is presented. Shortly after institution of antibiotic therapy, she spontaneously aborted a previable infant. Amniotic fluid was turbid and subsequently grew S typhi.

Many patients with Crohn's disease present with the complications of infection. Hence, antibiotics play an important role in the medical management of acute inflammatory disease, persistent perianal disease and as prophylaxis for surgical operations. The author's group has demonstrated that bacteria colonize the serosa of the bowel in patients with Crohn's disease in 27% of cases. Furthermore, pathogenic bacteria could be recovered from the lymph nodes in 33% of patients with Crohn's disease, compared with only 5% in a controlled population. Extraintestinal bacterial colonization was, therefor

Nocardicin A, a new monocyclic beta-lactam antibiotic, exerts a comparatively potent antimicrobial activity against gram-negative organisms, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the indole-positive and indole-negative Proteus groups (except Pr. morganii), Serratia marcescens and the Neisseria groups. The in vitro antimicrobial activity of nocardicin A against clinical isolates of Ps. aeruginosa was about twice that of carbenicillin. The mean MICs of nocardicin A for Pr. mirabilis, Pr. rettgeri and Pr. inconstans ranged from 3.13 to 12.5 microgram/ml and were 25 similar to 50 microgram/ml for Pr.

A study of open joint injuries treated at the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center from July 1969 through July 1973 showed that the vast majority of these injuries were at the knee. Three types of injury were identified: those associated with fractures, injuries without fracture, and gunshot wounds. All patients were treated with antibiotics, surgical débridement and irrigation, and installation of polyethylene tubes into the joint as a system of postoperative closed irrigation. The over-all infection rate was 2.1 per cent. The results of treatment indicate that

Mononuclear phagocytes from 8 of 10 patients with myelomonocytic leukemia and 2 of 9 patients with lymphoma phagocytized several species of bacteria but did not inhibit intracellular bacterial replication normally. Intracellular organisms were protected from the lethal effects of antibiotics in the medium. This defect of microbicidal function of malignant monocytes may explain in part the frequency of infection and the mechanism of antibiotic-resistant infection in some patients with malignant myeloproliferative and lymphoproliferative diseases.
