Lifetime heterosexist victimization and diurnal cortisol predict depression trajectories among sexual and gender minority emerging adults.

Heterosexist victimization constitutes a severe source of social stress with enduring effects on mental health and the adrenocortical functioning of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGTBQ) emerging adults. However, it is unknown what roles lower or higher diurnal cortisol at waking (cortisol intercepts) and less variable fluctuations ("flatter" slopes) play in the links between heterosexist victimization and depressive symptoms. In accordance with diathesis-stress, allostatic load, and biological embedding perspectives, we examined whether cortisol intercepts and slopes moderate

The Effect of Season and Breed on Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Hormones, Metabolic Hormones, and Oxidative Markers in Ponies and Horses.

BACKGROUND: Endocrine function in ponies differs from horses, with seasonally increased concentrations of plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and an increased risk of insulin dysregulation. HYPOTHESIS: (1) Season and breed differences exist in concentrations of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and metabolic hormones; and (2) systemic oxidative status is significantly different between ponies and horses and correlates with endocrine hormones. ANIMALS: Thirty-four healthy Welsh ponies and 14 healthy Quarter horses. METHODS: Blood was collected from Welsh ponies and Quarter horses in

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction in children with ADHD: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children, characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis has been proposed as one neurobiological mechanism, yet findings across individual studies are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To quantify differences in HPA-axis function between children under 18 years with ADHD and typically developing (TD) controls across multiple biological markers. TD children were defined as having no diagnosis of ADHD or any other

Serum Cortisol and Cardiovascular Disease Risk - A Potential Biomarker.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death globally, poses a significant burden on the healthcare sector. Its association with stress and Cushing's Syndrome has driven cortisol, the 'stress hormone,' to be a potential candidate in determining CVD risk. Cortisol synthesis and release through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis are regulated by several hormones and receptors involved in the pathological cascade towards CVD. Evidence suggests that metabolic syndrome plays a major role in cortisol-mediated CVD risk. On the other hand, non-metabolic features are also implica

Cortisol Secretion in Obesity Revisited: Lower Basal Serum and Salivary Cortisol with Diminished Cortisol Response to the Low Dose ACTH Challenge.

INTRODUCTION: Some clinical resemblance may exist between obesity, particularly abdominal obesity, and Cushing's syndrome. This has stimulated ongoing interest in the role of cortisol's secretion pattern, control, and metabolism in obesity. GOALS: The aim of the study was to investigate whether basal and stimulated levels of cortisol differ between healthy people with obesity and individuals with normal weight. METHODS: Total, free, and salivary cortisol was tested at baseline state and after 1 μg ACTH stimulation in 60 healthy subjects with obesity and 54 healthy lean controls. RESULTS: Ba

Performance of afternoon (16:00 h) serum cortisol for the diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Late-night salivary cortisol (LNSC), which assesses the loss of the circadian rhythm of cortisol, is one of the first-line tests performed to diagnose Cushing's syndrome (CS). Unfortunately, access to LNSC is still limited in some institutions. Alternatively, midnight serum cortisol can be measured, often combined with additional cortisol sampling over 24 h. This study investigates the performance of afternoon serum cortisol (F16h) for the positive diagnosis of hypercortisolism. METHODS: Retrospective study including consecutive patients evaluated for suspicion of CS by at least t

Perceptions of Warm-Up Effectiveness Maps to Stress Physiology in Surfers.

Serpell, BG and Cook, CJ. Perceptions of warm-up effectiveness maps to stress physiology in surfers. J Strength Cond Res 39(12): e1467-e1472, 2025-Warm-ups serve to enhance readiness in sport. Readiness has been defined as a state of physical, psychological, and behavioral preparation to perform. Testosterone and cortisol are often considered biomarkers of readiness in athletes. Furthermore, athletes who have more positive perceptions of warm-up tend to perform better. The purpose of this work was to explore whether changes in testosterone and cortisol profile map to perceptions of warm-up eff

Efficacy and Tolerability of Metyrapone in Mild Autonomous Cortisol Secretion: Real-World Findings From Clinical Practice.

OBJECTIVE: Mild autonomous cortisol secretion (MACS) is associated with increased cardiometabolic risk factors including hypertension, type 2 diabetes and dyslipidaemia. By using evening doses of metyrapone, a short-acting 11-β hydroxylase inhibitor, it has been shown that it is possible to reset the abnormal circadian cortisol rhythm in MACS. This study aimed to evaluate the tolerability and impact of this approach on cardiometabolic outcomes in patients with MACS. DESIGN: We conducted a single-centre retrospective, longitudinal review of patients with MACS who received evening metyrapone (2

Initial investigation into the metabolic effects of intra-articular betamethasone on normal and insulin dysregulated horses.

Given the metabolic effects of intra-articular (IA) corticosteroids, the goal of this project was to monitor the effects of IA betamethasone in both insulin dysregulated (ID)(n = 3) and non-ID (n = 5) horses. A cross-over design was used where eight geldings were injected with either 9 mg of betamethasone or saline into both metacarpophalangeal joints, followed by regular blood collections for adrenocorticotropin releasing hormone (ACTH), cortisol, insulin, and glucose, as well as pre- and post-administration oral sugar testing. Results were analyzed via two-way repeated measures analysis of v

Clinical Study on the Correlation Between Cortisol Secretion and Type 2 Diabetes and Hypertension in Patients with Adrenal Tumors.

This study aimed to investigate the correlation between cortisol secretion and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and hypertension in patients with adrenal tumors. A total of 164 patients with benign adrenal tumors were recruited between January 2019 and December 2024. Cortisol levels were assessed using a 1 mg overnight dexamethasone suppression test, classifying patients into three groups: non-functional adrenal tumors (group A, n=73), minimal autonomous cortisol secretion (MACS, group B, n=64), and MACS with confirmed Cushing's syndrome (group C, n=27). Statistical analyses compared th

Relatively low plasma cortisol levels in parturients are associated with epidural-related maternal fever.

BACKGROUND: Epidural analgesia (EA) may suppress the stress response or cortisol production during vaginal delivery by blocking pain transmission. However, there is no evidence that epidural analgesia contributes to epidural-related maternal fever (ERMF) by inhibiting the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between maternal cortisol levels and ERMF during vaginal delivery. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: The venous blood samples were collected from full-term pregnant women undergoing vaginal delivery and catego

Morning spot urinary cortisol-to-creatinine ratio: a novel screening tool for assessing excess cortisol secretion.

CONTEXT: Current screening methods for hypercortisolism face limitations in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: Our study proposes and validates a novel biomarker, the morning spot urinary cortisol-to-creatinine ratio (UCCR), as a simpler alternative for assessing excess cortisol secretion. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Chinese hospitalized patients, comprising a cohort of 167 patients who underwent the 1mg overnight dexamethasone suppression test (1mg DST). Urinary free cortisol level (UFC) and creatinine were measured using morning spot urine, and UCCR was subsequently cal

A Toaster in the Bathroom: Neural Correlates of Semantic Construction During Episodic Memory Recall.

When recalling what you ate for breakfast last Wednesday, you might not remember the exact meal, but you may confidently select the items you typically eat. Here, semantic knowledge (i.e., what you usually eat) contributes to the reconstructive process of episodic memory retrieval (i.e., what you actually ate). In the current fMRI study, we used a highly realistic virtual environment to test this influence of semantic knowledge on episodic memory retrieval. During the task, 60 participants actively (task-relevant) or passively (task-irrelevant) encountered everyday objects that were either con

Subjective, behavioural and physiological correlates of stress in women using hormonal contraceptives.

BACKGROUND: Stress, a major risk factor for mental health problems, is influenced by hormonal fluctuations from the menstrual cycle and hormonal oral contraceptives (OC). Despite widespread use, the impact of hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs) on stress is limited to one study. AIMS: This study examines psychoendocrine stress responses in women using IUDs, OCs and women with a natural, regular menstrual cycle (NC) to better understand how endogenous and exogenous hormones influence stress. METHOD: Using a repeated-measures design, we investigated stress responses in IUD and OC users and NC

Immunohistochemical characterization of normal feline adrenal tissue and adrenal tumors secreting aldosterone.

It is suggested that primary hyperaldosteronism (PHA) is an under-diagnosed cause of systemic hypertension in cats. No immunohistochemical markers of aldosterone synthesizing tissues have been identified, meaning that endocrine function cannot be inferred from examining feline tissues. In humans, expression of CYP11B2 (aldosterone synthase) is used for this purpose, but cats have a single CYP11B enzyme responsible for the terminal steps in synthesis of both aldosterone and cortisol, precluding its use as an indicator of steroidogenic function. This study aimed to identify immunohistochemical m

Superselective Adrenal Artery Embolization as a Novel Alternative Treatment for Aldosterone-Producing Adenomas: A Case of Refractory Hypertension With Concomitant Autonomous Cortisol Secretion.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is characterized by an overproduction of aldosterone, leading to hypertension and hypokalemia. Although surgery is an effective treatment for unilateral PA, some patients may be unwilling or unable to undergo this invasive procedure. This case report presents a 51-year-old female patient with refractory hypertension, diagnosed with right-sided hypersecretion of aldosterone and concomitant with autonomous cortisol secretion. The patient declined surgery and was treated with spironolactone as an alternative. Despite optimized medication over 3 months, her blood pressur

In-vitro experiments suggest Ixodes ricinus nymphs prefer blood with Borrelia infection and low glucocorticoid levels.

Ticks play a significant role in the transmission of various pathogens, impacting both human and animal health. Understanding the factors influencing tick feeding preferences is crucial for mitigating the risk of tick-borne diseases. This study investigates the blood preference of Ixodes ricinus nymphs, focusing on host species, stress hormone levels (glucocorticoids), and the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. bacteria. We conducted three series of in vitro experiments using a setup where individual blood drops (15 μl) were placed on filter paper over a 37 °C plate. Ticks were placed in th
