Cerebral blood flow SPET in transient global amnesia with automated ROI analysis by 3DSRT.

The aim of this study was to determine the areas involved in episodes of transient global amnesia (TGA) by calculation of cerebral blood flow (CBF) using 3DSRT, fully automated ROI analysis software which we recently developed. Technetium-99m L, L-ethyl cysteinate dimer single-photon emission tomography ((99m)Tc-ECD SPET) was performed during and after TGA attacks on eight patients (four men and four women; mean study interval, 34 days). The SPET images were anatomically standardized using SPM99 followed by quantification of 318 constant ROIs, grouped into 12 segments (callosomarginal, precent

Visualization and quantification of air embolism structure by processing postmortem MSCT data.

Venous air embolism (VAE) is an often occurring forensic finding in cases of injury to the head and neck. Whenever found, it has to be appraised in its relation to the cause of death. While visualization and quantification is difficult at traditional autopsy, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) offer a new potential in the diagnosis of VAE. This paper reports the findings of VAE in four cases of massive head injury examined postmortem by Multislice Computed Tomography (MSCT) prior to autopsy. MSCT data of the thorax were processed using 3D air structure reconstruction

MR myelography of sacral meningeal cysts.

PURPOSE: To describe the findings of sacral meningeal cysts (SMCs) on MR myelography and assess its value for the diagnosis of SMCs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We evaluated the MR images and MR myelograms obtained from 10 patients with SMC. MR myelograms were obtained using a 2D or 3D single-shot fast spin-echo sequence. In 5 patients, X-ray myelograms and postmyelographic CT images were compared with the MR myelograms. RESULTS: A total of 33 SMCs were diagnosed within the spinal canal and/or sacral foramen. MR myelograms clearly revealed each cyst as a well-defined mass showing hyperintensity (1

Fully automated on-scanner aortic four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging processing and hemodynamic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Four-dimensional (4D) flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is a valuable technique for evaluating cardiovascular hemodynamics, but it requires cumbersome, offline preprocessing and regional segmentation prior to quantifications or visualizations. METHODS: The Framework for Image Reconstruction (FIRE) framework was used to integrate 4D flow processing tasks directly into the scanner reconstruction pipeline. The method builds containerized applications with standardized raw and image CMR data input/output in the open-source Magnetic Resonance Data format. In this study, deep

Automated posterior cranial fossa volumetry by MRI: applications to Chiari malformation type I.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Quantification of PCF volume and the degree of PCF crowdedness were found beneficial for differential diagnosis of tonsillar herniation and prediction of surgical outcome in CMI. However, lack of automated methods limits the clinical use of PCF volumetry. An atlas-based method for automated PCF segmentation tailored for CMI is presented. The method performance is assessed in terms of accuracy and spatial overlap with manual segmentation. The degree of association between PCF volumes and the lengths of previously proposed linear landmarks is reported. MATERIALS AND METH

Submillimeter measurement of cup migration in clinical standard radiographs.

Assessing the displacement of bony implants is an important topic in arthroplasty, particularly in total hip replacement (THR). The observation of the migration is supposed to provide an insight into the fixation of the implant. Diagnostic standard radiographs of the pelvis are an advantageous data source for this purpose. The previous methods based on these images, however, lack of a thorough consideration of their projective nature. They do, hence, not reach the desired precision, which should lie in the submillimeter range to allow a detection of migration in the first one or two years afte

Incidental findings in preoperative computed tomography images of robotic-assisted total joint replacement: a multi-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The majority of robot-assisted total joint arthroplasties necessitate preoperative computed tomography (CT) scans. Incidental findings in these CT scans can introduce complexity into clinical treatment decisions. Consequently, this study sought to document the nature and frequency of incidental findings identified in preoperative CT imaging conducted for robot-assisted total joint arthroplasty, along with their impact on planned surgical procedures. METHODS: This investigation constitutes a retrospective review encompassing patients who underwent primary robot-assisted total hip a

Using computer-extracted image features for modeling of error-making patterns in detection of mammographic masses among radiology residents.

PURPOSE: Mammography is the most widely accepted and utilized screening modality for early breast cancer detection. Providing high quality mammography education to radiology trainees is essential, since excellent interpretation skills are needed to ensure the highest benefit of screening mammography for patients. The authors have previously proposed a computer-aided education system based on trainee models. Those models relate human-assessed image characteristics to trainee error. In this study, the authors propose to build trainee models that utilize features automatically extracted from imag
