Isolated scalp involvement with pityriasis versicolor alba (pityrias versicolor albus capitis) in a patient from a dry, temperate region.

Pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor) is a common superficial fungal infection of the skin involving the hyphal (filamentous) form of Pityrosporum orbiculare. Clinical cutaneous infection is common in humid, tropical climates, but declines to less than 5 percent in temperate climates. Isolated face or scalp involvement is rare. We present a boy living in a temperate region who had sudden onset of scalp and hairline involvement with tinea versicolor.

Fatal outcome due to aluminum phosphide poisoning in an old man with a psychiatric disorder as a latent post-COVID-19 challenge: A case report.

Aluminum phosphide is a metal phosphide widely implemented as a pesticide. In the country of Iran, it is recognized by the colloquial name of rice pill. Any trace of accidental or intentional ingestion of aluminum phosphidecan result in severe hemodynamic disorders and metabolic acidosis, ultimately leading to the patient's mortality. In this report, we document the unfortunate demise of an 85-year-old man who lived in isolation, having lost his wife to COVID-19. The patient consumed aluminum phosphide tablets and, despite resuscitation efforts, inevitably succumbed to the toxic effects.

Preliminary evidence of the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy for death anxiety in Iranian clients diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The authors investigated the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for the treatment of death anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with eight adult women in Iran. The ACT protocol was conducted in weekly solo sessions with each participant for 8 weeks (45 minutes each). The results were analyzed by visual analysis method and improvement percentage. ACT resulted in a 60%-80% decrease in death anxiety and a 51%-60% decrease in obsessive-compulsive symptoms, thereby indicating promise for ACT as a treatment for OCD and death anxiety.

Confusing a Pollen Grain with a Parasite Egg: an Appraisal of "Paleoparasitological Evidence of Pinworm (Enterobius Vermicularis) Infection in a Female Adolescent Residing in Ancient Tehran".

There is often the risk of confusing pollen grains with helminth eggs from archaeological sites. Thousands to millions of pollen grains can be recovered from archaeological burial sediments that represent past ritual, medication and environment. Some pollen grain types can be similar to parasite eggs. Such a confusion is represented by the diagnosis of enterobiasis in ancient Iran. The authors of this study confused a joint-pine (Ephedra spp.) pollen grain with a pinworm egg. This paper describes the specific Ephedra pollen morphology that can be confused with pinworm eggs.

Coinheritance of Gaucher disease and α-thalassemia resulting in confusion between two inherited hematologic diseases.

Gaucher type 1 disease has a wide spectrum of phenotypes ranging from asymptomatic individuals to patients with massive hepatosplenomegaly and bone involvement. In most, anemia, thrombocytopenia and splenomegaly are the primary manifestations at diagnosis, findings shared by the hemoglobinopathies. Here we report the co-inheritance of α-thalassemia and Gaucher disease in a consanguineous family followed in Iran, which resulted in confusion regarding the diagnosis. This report emphasizes the need to independently establish the diagnosis of every affected member of a family to ensure appropriate

[Campomelic syndrome (author's transl)].

A female premature infant with dwarfism, peculiar facial features, cleft palate and bone anomalies including bowing of the lower extremities with pretibial skin dimpling, the so called "campomelic syndrome" is presented. Other symptoms were hypotonia and respiratory distress. The radiological and autopsy findings in this child are described. The lack of known teratogenic factors during the pregnancy and the available data about the familial occurance of this malformation syndrome suggest the possibility of an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance in this patient. This is the first case of ca

Unusual presentation of hydatid disease.

Hydatid disease is endemic in most areas in Iran where sheep are raised, and diagnosis is fairly easy in a majority of cases. However, this fairly common disease may become very difficult and even impossible to diagnose. The most important factor in diagnosing hydatid disease is the awareness of its possibility. The striking clinical resemblance between hydatid disease and malignant diseases of some organs makes the correct diagnosis essential. In countries where this disease is endemic, any growing mass or tumor should arouse suspicion of hydatid disease.

Letter to the Editor: elevating fingernail hygiene in parasitic disease prevention - implications from Hajipour and Valizadeh's study.

The recent study by Hajipour and Valizadeh reveals a high prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in fingernail debris across occupational and demographic groups in Iran. In this letter, we contextualize their findings with global evidence, highlighting the significance of fingernails as hidden reservoirs of parasitic transmission. We propose the integration of fingernail hygiene-specifically, nail trimming and handwashing-into public health interventions, particularly, in endemic and underserved communities. Emphasizing the One Health approach, we underscore the potential of this low-co

Opioids ease my pain: Early-life malnutrition and elderly outcomes.

Despite a large body of evidence showing that early-life malnutrition influences adult outcomes, there is no evidence that early-life starvation causes use of opioids. Studying the long-term effects of a food shortage in Iran caused by WWII, we find that the rate of people who use drugs in this cohort increased significantly higher than in surrounding cohorts. Then, we examine a broad spectrum of outcomes for this cohort to shed light on potential causes of opioid use in the survivors of this cohort. Our findings suggest that pain contributes significantly to opioid use.

Successful Treatment of Disseminated Cutaneous Leishmaniasis With Liposomal Amphotericin B and Miltefosine in an Eight-year-old Girl.

This case report presents an 8-year-old girl, from Fars province in Iran, diagnosed with cutaneous leishmaniasis in the form of multiple nodular, ulcerative and crusted lesions disseminated on the face, trunk and extremities. The result of direct smear of ulcers was positive for Leishmania parasite. The patient had no immunodeficiency or relevant family history making her susceptible for disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis. The skin lesions failed to respond to multiple treatment courses of meglumine antimoniate or amphotericin B but were successfully treated with simultaneous miltefosine and

What priorities should be considered for Iranian veterans with ankle-foot injuries? A health needs assessment study, 25 years post-conflict.

Despite the passage of time, a large number of veterans are still affected by injuries acquired during Iran-Iraq war. In addition to their primary injuries, the majority of veterans also experience difficulty with long-term, secondary effects. Studies have shown that the most common of these include a range of disabilities, pain, and dramatic decline in mental health and quality of life. Improving living conditions and providing rehabilitation services to veterans has always been a main priority of authorities. The goal of this study was to explain the methods and materials with which these pr

Nosocomial oral myiasis in ICU patients: occurrence of three sequential cases.

Myiasis is the infestation of living vertebrates or humans tissues by dipterous larvae. The oral cavity is rarely affected by this infestation and the circumstances which can lead to oral myiasis include persistent mouth opening together with poor hygiene. Such infestations have been reported mainly in developing countries such as in Asia. Although rare, nosocomial myiasis must be noted carefully, especially in case of hospitalized patients. This report describes three cases of nosocomial oral myiasis in hospitalized patients in ICU (intensive care unit) in Tabriz, North West of Iran.
