AIM: Outcomes after resident involvement in emergent colectomies have rarely been studied. The aim of this study was to analyse the outcomes of laparoscopic sigmoidectomy for Hinchey III diverticulitis performed by residents.
METHOD: This study was a retrospective analysis of patients undergoing laparoscopic sigmoidectomy for diverticulitis. The sample was divided into two groups: patients operated on by a supervised resident (SR) or a senior surgeon (SS). Supervising surgeons and SSs could be general surgeons (GSs) or colorectal surgeons (CSs). A SR was considered the first surgeon if he/she

AIM: The aim of this work was to perform a long-term evaluation of a randomized trial focusing on functional aspects after excisional haemorrhoidectomy with a minimum follow-up of 9 years.
METHOD: A questionnaire-based study including patients operated on for haemorrhoids in Sweden between 1999 and 2003. A total of 225 patients were randomized to Milligan's or Ferguson's operation. Twenty-six patients had died and 151 (76%) participated after a median follow-up of 10.7 years (range 9.2-12.6 years).
RESULTS: Seventy-seven patients were in the Milligan group and 74 in the Ferguson group. Forty

AIM: Many studies have demonstrated predictors of the difficulty of laparoscopic anterior resection for rectal cancer. Few studies focus on the influence of pelvic dimensions on robotic-assisted mesorectal excision (ME) and intersphincteric resection (ISR). This study aimed to evaluate the influences of the mesorectal fat area (MFA) and mesorectal area on the difficulty of robotic sphincter-saving surgery.
METHODS: We included 156 patients with middle and low rectal cancer who underwent robotic sphincter-saving surgery. Clinical and anatomical factors, including the pelvic dimensions, were co

AIM: Anal stenosis (AS) is a rare but disabling disorder that often represents a complication of anorectal surgery. The aim of our study was to assess the safety and functional outcome of a modified rhomboid flap (MRF) in the treatment of moderate and severe AS.
METHODS: Between January 2002 and September 2017, 50 consecutive patients with moderate and severe AS who underwent an MRF were retrospectively included. Anal continence (Cleveland Clinic Incontinence Score) and symptoms (Obstructed Defaecation Syndrome Score) were assessed preoperatively and postoperatively at 12 months. Furthermore,

AIM: Anastomotic leak (AL) after colorectal resection is associated with increased rates of morbidity and mortality: potential permanent stoma formation, increased local recurrence, reduced cancer-related survival, poor functional outcomes and associated quality of life. Techniques to reduce leak rates are therefore highly sought.
METHOD: A literature search was performed for published full text articles using PubMed, Cochrane and Scopus databases with a focus on colorectal surgery 1990-2020. Additional papers were detected by scanning references of relevant papers.
RESULTS: A total of 53 pa

AIM: Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) should be delayed to a second stage in patients with ulcerative colitis and prolonged exposure to medical therapy. However, there is still discussion about whether a modified two-stage approach is preferable to a three-stage approach. Recently, a transanal approach has been introduced to overcome the well-known difficulties of laparoscopic pelvic surgery. This paper presents short-term outcomes of transanal IPAA (Ta-IPAA) according to a modified two-stage approach.
METHODS: Data from all patients who underwent a modified two-stage Ta-IPAA for ulcerativ

AIM: Intussusception in adults is rare and requires surgery in most cases. While abdominal laparoscopic surgery (LS) is becoming more popular, there are few reports on the outcomes of adult intussusception treated with LS. This study compared the feasibility of LS vs open surgery (OS) for adult intussusception.
METHOD: We reviewed retrospectively the medical records of adult patients with intussusception from three tertiary hospitals between 2000 and 2016. The patients were divided into LS and OS groups, and their surgical outcomes were compared.
RESULTS: Surgery was indicated in 71 patients
