BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a widespread nutritional deficiency, and iron supplementation, especially with ferrous sulfate (FeSO4), is the most common strategy to treat IDA; however, compliance is often poor with daily FeSO4 owing to negative side effects. In a previous study, iron from iron-enriched Aspergillus oryzae [Ultimine® Koji Iron (ULT)] was absorbed similarly to FeSO4.
OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study was to assess the safety of consuming ULT in terms of increasing non-transferrin-bound iron (NTBI) and gastrointestinal distress.
METHODS: Young female par

Iron is an essential micronutrient. However, nearly 40 % of arable land worldwide suffers from iron deficiency. In this study, the adaptation of shoots to root Fe2+ deficiency was investigated using hydroponically grown Astragalus mongholicus, a widely cultivated medicinal plant. The root Fe2+ deficiency significantly inhibited the plants' growth and the contents of Fe, Mo, as well as 10 metabolites, including -isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside, and nepitrin, which have reported anti-inflammatory activities. The root Fe2+ deficiency promoted the contents of Ca, Mg, K, Zn, Mn, and 12 metabolites, amon

Iron deficiency anemia is one of the major public health problems in children associated with the inadequate intake of bioavailable iron. Thus, this research was aimed at incorporating dabi teff, an underutilized/forgotten crop, into other pre-processed local food crops, viz., germinated maize, roasted barley, roasted field pea, dehulled oats, and linseed, to develop optimized iron-dense novel composite complementary flour with a reduced phytate/minerals molar ratio. Nutrisurvey software was employed to define ranges, and they were constrained at 20-35% dabi teff, 0-30% field pea, and 5-20% ma

Trace element iron affects T cell biology, but the knowledge about the role of iron in regulating Treg cell expansion is limited. Treg cells play an important role in keeping peripheral T cell tolerance, increasing Treg cell expansion is a promising therapeutic method for SLE. Here we showed that iron deficiency promotes Treg cell expansion by reducing ROS accumulation, improving the disease progression of pristane-induced lupus. Increased oxidative stress inhibits Treg cell differentiation by inducing cell apoptosis. Our data suggest that altering iron metabolism promotes Treg cell expansion

Community-based social marketing and mobilization increased knowledge and participation in preventive weekly iron-folic acid supplementation among women of reproductive age in Vietnam. Rates of buying and taking the weekly supplement containing 60 mg elemental iron and 3.5 mg folic acid among non-pregnant women of reproductive age was between 55% and 92%. Free distribution to pregnant women of the weekly supplement containing 120 mg iron and 3.5 mg folic acid covered almost all pregnant women during the project. In developing countries where community women's groups and health networks are str

We describe diffuse microporotic lesions observed in most of the scattered skeletal remains belonging to a ≈ 6 months-old female (genetic sexing) prehispanic (antiquity ≈ 600 years BP) individual recovered from a small recess of a basaltic burial cave in the highlands (2300 m above sea level) of Tenerife. Although sphenoid wings were lacking, microporotic lesions were present in several bones, especially in the hard palate, basilar part of the occipital bone, outer aspect of the maxilla, and proximal half of the right humerus, accompanied by a subtle periosteal reaction. Although non-specific,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This study is to examine potential micronutrient deficiencies and any need for supplementation in children following specific diet plans in the first 1000 days of life.
RECENT FINDINGS: Optimal nutrition in the first 1000 days of life has a lifelong positive impact on child development. Specific intrauterine and perinatal factors, pathological conditions, and dietary restrictions can represent potential risk factors for micronutrient deficiencies in the first 1000 days of life, which can have negative systemic consequences. Preterm and low-birth-weight infants are intrinsic

BACKGROUND: Over the last few years, epidemiological studies have shown that infection with Helicobacter pylori has a major effect on micronutrient deficiency as well as on adverse pregnancy outcomes. Importantly, there are gaps in understanding the linkage of H. pylori infection with micronutrients deficiency in pregnant women.
OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the association between H. pylori infection and micronutrient deficiencies in pregnant women.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted for relevant articles using PubMed, Web of Sc

BACKGROUND: Malabsorptive bariatric surgery requires life-long micronutrient supplementation. Based on the recommendations, we assessed the number of adjustments of micronutrient supplementation and the prevalence of vitamin and mineral deficiencies at a minimum follow-up of 5 years after biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS).
METHODS: Between October 2010 and December 2013, a total of 51 patients at a minimum follow-up of 5 years after BPD-DS were invited for a clinical check-up with a nutritional blood screening test for vitamins and minerals.
RESULTS: Forty-three of fift

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials can serve as an opportunity gateway for enhanced health benefits to the target population, above and beyond the specific intervention being tested.
OBJECTIVE: The Supplementation with Multiple Micronutrients Intervention Trial (SUMMIT), a randomized, controlled clinical trial in Lombok, Indonesia, found that supplementation during pregnancy with multiple micronutrients reduced 90-day infant mortality by nearly 20% as compared with iron-folic acid. This trial was designed as both a program and research trial and used community facilitators to serve as liaisons betwe

Amino acid chelated iron (bisglycinate chelate iron, Ferrochel) has been developed and used as a food fortifier to prevent and treat iron deficiency anemia. However, its long-term use has not been described and reports of iron overload are unavailable. We report a case of a mother and daughter who were diagnosed with iron overload based on blood sampling. Serum analysis revealed elevated ferritin levels and increased transferrin saturation (TSAT). MRI of the daughter showed iron accumulation in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow with normal inflammatory response and no findings suggestive of c

Prenatal alcohol exposure causes neurodevelopmental disability and is associated with a functional iron deficiency in the fetus and neonate, even when the mother consumes an apparently iron-adequate diet. Here, we test whether gestational administration of the clinically relevant iron supplement Fer-In-Sol mitigates alcohol’s adverse impacts upon the fetus. Pregnant Long-Evans rats consumed an iron-adequate diet and received 5 g/kg alcohol by gavage for 7 days in late pregnancy. Concurrently, some mothers received 6 mg/kg oral iron. We measured maternal and fetal weights, hematology, tissue ir

Iron casein succinylate (ICS) liquid oral preparation as iron supplement has uncomfortable taste after a long period of storage because of its stability, and poor bioavailability of iron compared to any other iron preparations. To improve the chemical stability of ICS and enhance the bioavailability of iron, chitosan-ICS nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by complex coacervation method and stabilized with polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400. NPs were spherical (mean diameter of 830-1070 nm) with positive charge (+30-60 mV) depending on the composition of NPs. Addition of PEG400 (2 w/v %) increased th

BACKGROUND: Approximately 600 million children of preschool and school age are anaemic worldwide. It is estimated that half of the cases are due to iron deficiency. Consequences of iron deficiency anaemia during childhood include growth retardation, reduced school achievement, impaired motor and cognitive development, and increased morbidity and mortality. The provision of daily iron supplements is a widely used strategy for improving iron status in children but its effectiveness has been limited due to its side effects, which can include nausea, constipation or staining of the teeth. Β-thalassemia trait (β-TT) is a common hemoglobin disorder that is frequently confused with iron deficiency anemia (IDA), leading potentially low-yield confirmatory hemoglobin fraction analysis and increased use of healthcare resources. To assess the appropriateness of β-TT screening in patients with microcytic hypochromic anemia and to detect laboratory and clinical predictors of potentially low yield testing. A total of 12,622 patients with microcytic hypochromic anemia who underwent hemoglobin fraction analysis by HPLC between February 2023 to July 2025 were included in this retrospective c

BACKGROUND: Over 78 million American adults have obesity. Bariatric surgery is the leading means of durable weight loss. Nutritional deficiencies are commonly treated post-operatively but are often undiagnosed pre-operatively. Malnutrition is correlated with adverse surgical outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to assess pre-operative nutritional status in our bariatric surgery candidates in a cross-sectional study.
METHODS: We recruited 58 bariatric candidates approved to undergo the Roux-en Y gastric bypass. Nutritional status was determined for vitamins A, B12, D, E-α, and E-β/γ

Food fortification is a cost-effective and sustainable strategy to prevent or correct micronutrient deficiencies. A double-blind cluster (bari) randomised controlled trial was conducted in a rural community in Bangladesh to evaluate the impact of consumption of chapatti made of micronutrient-fortified wheat flour for 6 months by school-aged children on their vitamin A, haemoglobin and iron status. A total of 43 baris (group of households) were randomly selected. The baris were randomly assigned to either intervention or control group. The intervention group received wheat flour fortified with

At the World Summit for Children (New York, 1990), a resolution was passed to eliminate vitamin A and iodine deficiencies and significantly reduce iron-deficiency anemia by the year 2000. In responding to this urgent call, we developed a unique multiple-micronutrient fortification delivery system called "GrowthPlus/CreciPlus." Using this technology, a fortified powder fruit drink has been formulated and extensively evaluated. One serving of the product delivers the following US recommended dietary allowances: 20-30% of iron; 10-35% of vitamin A; 25-35% of iodine; 100-120% of vitamin C; 25-35%

Background: Nutritional deficiency anemias-including iron, vitamin B12, and folate deficiencies-are common worldwide and are increasingly recognized as potential contributors to venous thromboembolism (VTE). Mechanistic and epidemiologic data suggest that anemia may promote thrombosis through hypoxia, endothelial activation, reactive thrombocytosis, and hyperhomocysteinemia. However, a focused synthesis of clinical and genetic evidence specifically linking nutritional deficiency anemia to VTE has been lacking. Methods: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed and the Cochrane Library from in
