Predictive comparison of specific depression symptoms for peripheral inflammation.

Peripheral inflammation has been associated with depression but may not map uniformly onto all depression symptoms and rather be associated with specific neurovegetative symptoms. The current work aims to extend previous research by applying a benchmark comparison in a residualized random forest framework, which allows us to statistically compare depression sum scores with specific symptoms in their relation to inflammation. The analysis was run using data of 311,474 individuals from the UK Biobank. Circulating C-reactive protein, white blood cell counts, the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and

Inflammatory indices are associated with non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and C-reactive protein (CRP)-albumin ratio (CAR) constitute peripheral inflammatory indices. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between these inflammatory indices and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: Adolescents diagnosed with MDD were enrolled in this study. All participants underwent psychological and biochemical assessments and were classified into two groups based on the presence or absence

The novel CKD-INF score for distinguishing infectious from non-infectious inflammation in patients with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease.

Our study analyzed 831 non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients admitted from January 2007 to January 2023, using 665 for creating and 166 for validating the CKD-Infectious Inflammation (CKD-INF) score. This score distinguishes inflammation types using logistic regression outcomes and aligns with the International Sepsis Definition Conference criteria. The study's participants had an average age of 76.2 ± 11.2 years, with 37% female and over half diagnosed with diabetes. The resulting score was as follows:[Formula: see text] where NLR refers to the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, CRP

The Association Between the Eosinophilic COPD Phenotype with Overall Survival and Exacerbations in Patients on Long-Term Non-Invasive Ventilation.

BACKGROUND: Long-term non-invasive ventilation (LT-NIV) can prolong life expectancy and may reduce the number of exacerbations in patients with COPD. The eosinophilic phenotype has recently gained significant attention as a treatable trait in COPD. However, it is less known how this phenotype relates to exacerbations and mortality in patients who are set up on LT-NIV. METHODS: A total of 191 patients with COPD (65 ± 8 years, 55% women) who were setup on LT-NIV and followed-up (28/15-49/months) at our tertiary centre were analysed. The eosinophilic phenotype was defined by using an accepted cu

Innate immune response to bacterial infections in hospitalized glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-deficient patients; diagnostic value of white blood cell count.

INTRODUCTION: Inherited hematological disorders, affecting immune cell quantity and function, compromise immune system efficiency. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common X-linked inherited enzymopathy and has been implicated in compromised immune cell function and host defense, and in elevating infection vulnerability. This study explores the impact of G6PD deficiency on immune cellular response and infection-related mortality. METHOD: Adults with G6PD deficiency and bacterial infections (2017-2021) were analyzed. Demographics, comorbidities, laboratory paramet

Differences in Neutrophil Counts Between African and Non-African Countries in 2 International Clinical Trials.

BACKGROUND: Differences in absolute neutrophil count (ANC) between African and non-African populations have been reported. Neutropenia has also been reported during rifamycin use. ANC values in current tables that assign severity grades to clinical or laboratory events (National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events [CTCAE] and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Division of AIDS [DAIDS]) might not consistently be applicable among different populations. METHODS: During 2 international tuberculosis treatment trials, 337 participants received 10 m

Red flags for clinical suspicion of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA).

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), is a rare ANCA-associated systemic vasculitis. Its overlapping features with other vasculitic or eosinophilic diseases, and the wide and heterogeneous range of clinical manifestations, often result in a delay to diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To identify red flags that raise a suspicion of EGPA to prompt diagnostic testing and to present an evidence-based clinical checklist tool for use in routine clinical practice. METHODS: Systematic literature review and expert consensus to identify a list of red flags based on clinical judgement. G

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease's eosinophilic phenotype: Clinical characteristics, biomarkers and biotherapy.

COPD is a chronic, heterogeneous inflammatory disorder of the airways with persistent and poorly reversible airflow limitation, causing symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, and sputum production. Despite optimal treatment, some patients remain symptomatic due to the disease's heterogeneity, manifesting in various phenotypes. One notable phenotype involves eosinophilic inflammation, with a variable prevalence. Identifying eosinophilic phenotypes is crucial for tailored therapeutic strategies, as they respond favorably to corticosteroids and potentially biologics. Recent advances in both

Identifying Inflammation in Knee Osteoarthritis: Relationship of Synovial Fluid White Blood Cell Count to Effusion-Synovitis on Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Inflammation is a potential pain generator and treatment target in knee osteoarthritis (OA). Inflammation can be detected on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and by synovial fluid white blood cell count (WBC). However, the performance characteristics of synovial fluid WBC for the detection of synovitis have not been established. This study was undertaken to determine the sensitivity and specificity of synovial fluid WBC in identifying inflammation in knee OA using MRI effusion-synovitis as the gold standard. METHODS: We identified records of patients seen at an academic center with

Responsiveness of a Histologic Scoring System Compared With Peak Eosinophil Count in Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

INTRODUCTION: The optimal instrument for assessing histologic disease activity in patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is unclear. We assessed the responsiveness of the EoE Histologic Scoring System (EoE-HSS) when compared with that of the peak eosinophil count (PEC). METHODS: Histopathology slides were obtained from patients with EoE at baseline and after 8 weeks of treatment with swallowed topical budesonide or elimination diet. Two blinded gastrointestinal pathologists scored biopsies on the EoE-HSS, PEC, and 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS) of overall histologic severity. Change w

Eosinophilic fasciitis induced by a game of drumming probably via type 2 innate immunity.

We report a case of eosinophilic fasciitis triggered by strenuous physical activity, which did not relapse during the follow-up period. We ascertained that interleukin-33 (IL-33) was released from the vascular endothelial cells after intense exercise, inducing type 2 innate lymphocytes (ILC2) and causing fasciitis. A healthy woman experienced itching on both limbs a few hours after a game of drumming. Her hand, knee joints, and legs gradually swelled up with groove signs along the superficial veins. White blood cell and eosinophil counts were significantly elevated. Magnetic resonance imaging

Systemic and mucosal mobilization of granulocyte subsets during lentiviral infection.

Granulocytes mediate broad immunoprotection through phagocytosis, extracellular traps, release of cytotoxic granules, antibody effector functions and recruitment of other immune cells against pathogens. However, descriptions of granulocytes in HIV infection and mucosal tissues are limited. Our goal was to characterize granulocyte subsets in systemic, mucosal and lymphoid tissues during lentiviral infection using the rhesus macaque (RM) model. Mononuclear cells from jejunum, colon, cervix, vagina, lymph nodes, spleen, liver and whole blood from experimentally naïve and chronically SHIVsf162p3-i
