Vacuum Phenomenon in the Lumbar Spine: Pilot Study for Accuracy of Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

OBJECTIVES: Vacuum phenomenon (VP) is defined as air within a joint. Many pathologies are associated with VP, mainly degenerative disease and trauma. Although patients with intradiscal gas may be asymptomatic, it promotes disc degeneration and can eventually become painful. VP is suspected to be an indicator of segmental mobility, helping in determining the extent of spinal fusion in a preoperative setting. This could make the detection of VP useful on routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lower spine. We determined the accuracy of MRI in detecting intradiscal gas through a retrospec

Increasing soft tissue depth is associated with stalling of magnetically controlled growing rods.

BACKGROUND: Magnetically controlled growing rods (MCGR) represent the most used implant for the treatment of early onset scoliosis (EOS). These implants lengthen through the application of a remote magnetic field but distraction force generation has been negatively correlated with increasing soft tissue depth. Given the high rate of MCGR stalling, we proposed to investigate the impact of preoperative soft tissue depth on the rate of MCGR stalling at a minimum of 2 years following implantation. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective review of prospectively enrolled children with EOS treated w

Incidental findings involving the temporomandibular joint on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is frequently imaged in head and neck computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. Depending on the indication for the study, an abnormality of the TMJ may be an incidental finding. These findings encompass both intra- and extra-articular disorders. They may also be related to local, regional or systemic conditions. Familiarity with these findings along with pertinent clinical information helps narrow the list of differential diagnoses. While definitive diagnosis may not be immediately apparent, a systematic approach contributes to im

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Findings in a Case of Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis of the Knee.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare benign condition of tenosynovial proliferation that mostly affects the knee joint. In this case report, we present a 39-year-old female with a ten-year history of gradual progression in the size of painful soft tissue swelling in her left knee. Our case report emphasizes the MRI's ability to provide detailed information on tendon sheath and synovium involvement, as well as extensive extra-articular involvement and hemosiderin deposition.

Is it possible to evaluate upper and lower cervical interdependency on supine magnetic resonance imaging?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There is a significant correlation between the upper and lower cervical alignments associated with a compensatory mechanism to maintain horizontal gaze. Evaluating this correlation before cervical fusion operations is essential, particularly in the upper cervical region, to prevent the occurrence of postoperative malalignment. This study was designed to investigate whether evaluating the interdependency between the upper and lower cervical alignments on neutral supine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or supine MRI with neck extension is possible. METHODS: This study in

Magnetic resonance imaging predicts outcomes of conservative treatment in patients with lateral epicondylitis.

BACKGROUND: The clinical validity of positive magnetic resonance imaging findings in lateral epicondylitis is controversial. We hypothesized that magnetic resonance imaging could predict the outcome of conservative treatment. This study determined the relationship between magnetic resonance imaging-defined disease severity and treatment outcomes in patients with lateral epicondylitis. METHODS: This retrospective single-cohort study included 43 conservatively managed and 50 surgically treated patients with lateral epicondylitis. The magnetic resonance imaging scores and clinical outcomes were

Advances in the Evaluation of Peripheral Enthesitis by Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Patients With Psoriatic Arthritis.

Enthesitis is a key disease manifestation in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) that considerably contributes to pain, lower physical function, and reduced quality of life. Clinical assessment of enthesitis lacks sensitivity and specificity, and therefore better methods are urgently needed. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows detailed assessment of the components of enthesitis, and consensus-based validated MRI scoring systems exist. These include the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT) Heel Enthesitis MRI Scoring System (HEMRIS) method, which assesses the entheses of the heel

Diagnostics of Sacroiliac Joint Differentials to Axial Spondyloarthritis Changes by Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

The diagnosis of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is usually based on a pattern of imaging and clinical findings due to the lack of diagnostic criteria. The increasing use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the sacroiliac joints (SIJ) to establish the diagnosis early in the pre-radiographic phase has resulted in a shift in the paradigm with an increasing frequency of axSpA diagnoses and a changed sex distribution. Non-radiographic axSpA affects males and females nearly equally, whereas ankylosing spondylitis predominantly occurs in males. The MRI-based increasing frequency of axSpA in women

[Computed tomography versus magnetic resonance imaging : Pros and cons in axial spondyloarthritis].

The diagnosis of axial spondyloarthritis depends on direct visualization of the sacroiliitis in addition to clinical assessment and determination of the histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27. While the value of conventional radiographic images has meanwhile been described in many studies as insufficient to diagnose the disease at an early stage, magnetic resonance imaging and also computed tomography now offer the possibility to visualize findings, such as bone marrow edema, erosion, fat metaplasia, backfill and ankylosis. Thus, it is necessary to decide which procedure should be used and when. F

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings of Lymphoepithelial Carcinoma of the Submandibular Gland: A Case Report.

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) is an uncommon neoplasm strongly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). LEC of the salivary glands (LECSG) is very rare: the most commonly affected site is the parotid gland, followed by the submandibular gland. This report describes the case of a 58-year-old man who presented with a left submandibular mass that had gradually increased in size over five years. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the mass showed low apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values, rapid initial enhancement before reaching a plateau on dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI), and

Brain Tumor Detection Based on Deep Learning Approaches and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

The rapid development of abnormal brain cells that characterizes a brain tumor is a major health risk for adults since it can cause severe impairment of organ function and even death. These tumors come in a wide variety of sizes, textures, and locations. When trying to locate cancerous tumors, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a crucial tool. However, detecting brain tumors manually is a difficult and time-consuming activity that might lead to inaccuracies. In order to solve this, we provide a refined You Only Look Once version 7 (YOLOv7) model for the accurate detection of meningioma, gliom

BACKGROUND: Lung is the most common primary site of brain metastases (BMs). For different pathological types of BMs have some similar characteristics, it is still a challenge to confirm the origin based on their characteristics directly. BMs of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) have favorable therapeutic expectations due to their high sensitivity to radiotherapy. This study sought to identify unique characteristics of BMs in SCLC, aiming to assist in clinical decision-making. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with BMs of lung cancer who received radiotherapy from January 2017 to January 2022 were revie
