The Role of Maternal Homocysteine Concentration in Pregnancy Complications: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preeclampsia (PE), preterm birth, low birth weight (LBW), small for gestational age (SGA), and stillbirth are major contributors to maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Elevated maternal homocysteine (Hcy) levels, influenced by genetic, dietary, and lifestyle factors, have been increasingly associated with placental dysfunction and adverse pregnancy outcomes. This review aims to evaluate the link between hyperhomocysteinemia and pregnancy complications to inform clinical practice. Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of

Effects of Chlorogenic Acid-Rich Eucommia ulmoides Extract Supplementation During Late Gestation and Lactation on Maternal Health, Colostrum Composition, and Neonatal Intestinal Development.

Chlorogenic acid (CGA)-rich extract from Eucommia ulmoides (CAE) has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; however, systematic investigations of its maternal effects on offspring development from late gestation through lactation are limited. This study investigated the effects of dietary CAE supplementation in sows during late gestation and lactation on maternal and offspring outcomes. Sows were randomly allocated to receive either a basal diet (CON) or the basal diet supplemented with 2000 mg/kg CAE. Compared with CON, CAE supplementation resulted in elevated maternal serum total anti

Maternal asthma symptoms during pregnancy on child behaviour and executive function: A Bayesian phenomics approach.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal history of inflammatory conditions has been linked to offspring developmental and behavioural outcomes. This phenomenon may be explained by the maternal immune activation (MIA) hypothesis, which posits that dysregulation of the gestational immune environment affects foetal neurodevelopment. The timing of inflammation is critical. We aimed to understand maternal asthma symptoms during pregnancy, in contrast with paternal asthma symptoms during the same period, on child behaviour problems and executive function in a population-based cohort. METHODS: Data were obtained from 8

Parasitic infections during pregnancy in Gabon affect glycosylation patterns of maternal and child antibodies.

Antibody glycosylation patterns can affect antibody functionality and thereby contribute to protection against invading pathogens. During pregnancy, maternal antibodies can be transferred through the placenta and contribute to modulating both the mother's and her child's immune responses. Although several studies of IgG glycosylation during pregnancy have been carried out, very few cohorts studied were from sub-Saharan Africa, where exposure to microorganisms and parasites is high. In Lambaréné, Gabon, 106 pregnant women in their third trimester were enrolled into this study. At enrolment, uri

Maternal Serotonergic Antidepressant Use in Pregnancy and Risk of Seizures in Children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether children born to women who use serotonergic antidepressants during pregnancy have higher risk of neonatal seizures and epilepsy. METHODS: We used Swedish register-based data to examine associations between maternal reported use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) in pregnancy and diagnosis of neonatal seizures or epilepsy in >1.2 million children. To account for systematic differences between exposed and unexposed children, we adjusted for a wide range of measured confounders.

Racial and ethnic disparities in pregnancy complications and the protective role of greenspace: A retrospective birth cohort study.

Greenspace may positively impact pregnancy health for racially and economically minoritized populations; few studies have examined local availability and accessibility of green/park space in reducing maternal morbidity. The objective of this retrospective birth cohort study was to examine the association between residential exposure to greenspace and adverse pregnancy health outcomes in a Southern US state characterized by high poverty and racial disparities in maternal health (2013-2017). National data from the Protected Area database - United States (PAD-US) and ParkServe estimated three pub

Maternal obesity modulates sexually dimorphic epigenetic regulation and expression of leptin receptor in offspring hippocampus.

Maternal obesity during pregnancy is associated with a greater risk for obesity and neurodevelopmental deficits in offspring. This developmental programming of disease is proposed to involve neuroendocrine, inflammatory, and epigenetic factors during gestation that disrupt normal fetal brain development. The hormones leptin and insulin are each intrinsically linked to metabolism, inflammation, and neurodevelopment, which led us to hypothesise that maternal obesity may disrupt leptin or insulin receptor signalling in the developing brain of offspring. Using a C57BL/6 mouse model of high fat die

The influence of maternal mental illness on vaccination uptake in children: a UK population-based cohort study.

Reduced vaccination uptake is a growing and global public health concern. There is limited knowledge about the effect of maternal mental illness (MMI) on rates of childhood vaccination. This retrospective cohort study examined 479,949 mother-baby pairs born between 1993 and 2015 in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD GOLD), a UK-based, primary health-care database. The influence of MMI on children's vaccination status at two and five years of age was investigated using logistic regression adjusting for sex of the child, child ethnicity, delivery year, maternal age, practice level dep

Maternal occupation and the risk of major birth defects: a follow-up analysis from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study.

This study further examined the association between selected maternal occupations and a variety of birth defects identified from prior analysis and explored the effect of work hours and number of jobs held and potential interaction between folic acid and occupation. Data from a population-based, multi-center case-control study was used. Analyses included 45 major defects and specific sub-occupations under five occupational groups: healthcare workers, cleaners, scientists, teachers and personal service workers. Both logistic regression and Bayesian models (to minimize type-1 errors) were used,

Maternal periconceptional vitamins: interactions with selected factors and congenital anomalies?

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms by which folic acid may contribute to reductions in risk of several congenital anomalies are unknown. The data gap includes a lack of information on possible effect modification between maternal folic acid use and other maternal exposures. We hypothesized that effects of congenital anomalies associated with maternal fever, cigarette smoking or alcohol use would be modified by intake of vitamins. METHODS: We explored case-control data that showed risk reductions among infants and fetuses whose mothers consumed vitamins. Data were from California deliveries of infants…

Involuntary tobacco smoke exposures from conception to 18 years increase midlife cardiometabolic disease risk: a 40-year longitudinal study.

Few population studies have sufficient follow-up period to examine early-life exposures with later life diseases. A critical question is whether involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke from conception to adulthood increases the risk of cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) in midlife. In the Collaborative Perinatal Project, serum-validated maternal smoking during pregnancy (MSP) was assessed in the 1960s. At a mean age of 39 years, 1623 offspring were followed-up for the age at first physician-diagnoses of any CMDs, including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, or hyperlipidemia. Detailed informatio

Prenatal exposures and cell type proportions are main drivers of FKBP5 DNA methylation in maltreated and non-maltreated children.

DNA methylation in peripheral tissues may be a relevant biomarker of risk for developing mental disorders after exposure to early life adversity. Genes involved in HPA axis regulation, such as FKBP5, might play a key role. In this study, we aimed to identify the main drivers of salivary FKBP5 methylation in a cohort of 162 maltreated and non-maltreated children aged 3-5 years at two measurement timepoints. We combined data from a targeted bisulfite sequencing approach for fine-mapping 49 CpGs in regulatory regions of FKBP5 and epigenetic scores for exposure to alcohol, cigarette smoke, and glu

Maternal Obesity and Risk of Congenital Heart Defects.

Congenital heart defects are the most common malformations in newborns and the leading cause of morbidity and mortality due to congenital abnormalities. As a result of genetic susceptibility and environmental exposure, a few of these anomalies could be prevented by managing modifiable risk factors. Given that maternal obesity is a predisposing factor for obstetric and fetal complications, this review aims to explore its association with congenital heart disease, while addressing mechanisms underlying its pathophysiology at the cellular and molecular levels. For this purpose, a series of search
