[Effectiveness of plasmapheresis in adolescent myasthenia gravis treatment].

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a disease with autoimmune background. Impaired neuromuscular transmission is caused by blockage of acetylcholine receptors on postsynaptic membrane by circulating specific antibodies. Recognition of myasthenia gravis in children, especially its ocular type, may be difficult due to occurrence of similar clinical symptoms in other diseases like ecephalomyopathies. MG is characterized by variety of clinical symptoms and their alternations during excercise and rest. AIM OF THE STUDY: Case report of nearly 18-year-old girl with generalized type of MG. MATERIA

Physiology of psychogenic movement disorders.

Psychogenic movement disorders (PMDs) are common, but their physiology is largely unknown. In most situations, the movement is involuntary, but in a minority, when the disorder is malingering or factitious, the patient is lying and the movement is voluntary. Physiologically, we cannot tell the difference between voluntary and involuntary. The Bereitschaftspotential (BP) is indicative of certain brain mechanisms for generating movement, and is seen with ordinarily voluntary movements, but by itself does not indicate that a movement is voluntary. There are good clinical neurophysiological method

α8-integrins are required for hippocampal long-term potentiation but not for hippocampal-dependent learning.

Integrins are heterodimeric transmembrane cell adhesion receptors that are essential for a wide range of biological functions via cell-matrix and cell-cell interactions. Recent studies have provided evidence that some of the subunits in the integrin family are involved in synaptic and behavioral plasticity. To further understand the role of integrins in the mammalian central nervous system, we generated a postnatal forebrain and excitatory neuron-specific knockout of alpha8-integrin in the mouse. Behavioral studies showed that the mutant mice are normal in multiple hippocampal-dependent learni

De novo formation of cerebral cavernous malformation in a patient with intractable epilepsy: case report and review.

AIM: The exact origin and process of development of cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) is currently unknown. In this article, the authors present de novo CCM formation in a patient with intractable epilepsy and discuss the pathogenesis of CCM in light of several current theories. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 34-year-old man presented with a 10-year history of intractable seizures. His neurological examination was normal, and the initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was suggestive of right mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS). Follow-up MRI study showed development of CCM in the right frontal regio

Paradoxical shortening of sympathetic skin response latency at distal recording sites.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate and to discuss the neurophysiological mechanism of paradoxical shortening of the sympathetic skin response (SSR) latency at distal recording sites. METHODS: The latency and peak-to-peak amplitude of SSRs evoked by magnetic stimuli were analyzed. Eight active electrodes were placed on the palmar (anterior) and dorsal (posterior) sides of the hand (forearm) proximal to the distal arrangement. RESULTS: SSRs from two palm sites had significantly shorter latencies and larger amplitudes than the SSRs at the other six sites, including the prox

Effect of nitric oxide on auditory cortical neurons of aged rats.

Age-related changes in the effects of nitric oxide (NO) on neurons of the auditory cortex have not been determined. We therefore evaluated the anatomical changes and neurophysiological characteristics of these neurons in rats as a function of age. The numbers of cresyl violet stained cells, the numbers and areas of NADPH-d-positive neuronal cell bodies, and their optical density, were measured in Sprague-Dawley rats aged 24 months (aged group) and 4 months (control group). The modulatory effects of NO on K(+) currents of acutely isolated rat auditory cortical neurons were also assessed. There

Anatomical and physiological basis and mechanism of action of neurostimulation for epilepsy.

Neurostimulation is an emerging treatment for neurological diseases. Different types of neurostimulation exist mainly depending of the part of the nervous system that is being affected and the way this stimulation is being administered. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a neurophysiological treatment for patients with medically or surgically refractory epilepsy. Over 30,000 patients have been treated with VNS. No clear predictive factors for responders have been identified. To date, the precise mechanism of action remains to be elucidated. Better insight in the mechanism of action may identify

Interhemispheric callosal transfer in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: an event-related potential study.

Although subtypes of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder have been recognized for some time, few studies have investigated neurophysiological differences that may reflect these. Here, adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-inattentive type, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-combined type and controls performed a simple reaction time laterality task (the Poffenberger) during 128-channel electroencephalography recording. Visual-evoked potentials were used to calculate interhemispheric transfer times. As expected for controls, mean right-to-left transfer time was faster

A sensory system at the interface between urban stormwater runoff and salmon survival.

Motor vehicles are a major source of toxic contaminants such as copper, a metal that originates from vehicle exhaust and brake pad wear. Copper and other pollutants are deposited on roads and other impervious surfaces and then transported to aquatic habitats via stormwater runoff. In the western United States, exposure to non-point source pollutants such as copper is an emerging concern for many populations of threatened and endangered Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) that spawn and rear in coastal watersheds and estuaries. To address this concern, we used conventional neurophysiological rec

A novel mutation of aprataxin associated with ataxia ocular apraxia type 1: phenotypical and genotypical characterization.

Ataxia oculomotor apraxia type 1 (AOA1) is the most common form of autosomal recessive ataxia in Japan, and the second in Portugal after Friedreich ataxia. AOA1 is typically characterized by early-onset cerebellar ataxia, oculomotor apraxia, hypoalbuminemia, hypercholesterolemia and late axonal sensori-motor neuropathy. AOA1 is associated with the aprataxin gene (APTX) encoding a protein involved in DNA repair. We characterized a novel homozygous missense mutation of APTX in a 34 year-old female patient born from consanguineous parents. The mutation, a Val230Gly caused by a c.689 T>G substitut

Taste deficits related to dental deafferentation: an electrogustometric study in humans.

Dental treatments, the prevalence of which increases with age, can cause orofacial somatosensory deficits. In order to examine whether they may also affect taste sensitivity, electrogustometric thresholds were measured at 9 loci on the tongue surface in 391 healthy non-smoking, non-medicated subjects. Results showed that the greater the number of deafferented teeth, the higher the thresholds. Irrespective of age, subjects with more than 7 deafferented teeth exhibited significantly higher thresholds than subjects with fewer than 7 deafferented teeth. Conversely, across age groups, no statistica

Electrophysiological signs of permanent axonal loss in a follow-up study of patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome.

The neurophysiological mechanisms for persisting impairment of motor function after Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) were assessed in 37 unselected patients 1-13 years after diagnosis. For evaluation of reinnervation and axonal loss, macroelectromyography (macro-EMG) including measurement of fiber density (FD) was performed. Data from neuropathy symptom score, neuropathy disability score, nerve conduction studies, and quantitative sensory examination were ranked and summed to a neuropathy rank sum score (NRSS). The isokinetic muscle strength at the ankle was measured. Signs of axonal loss with in

FMRI reveals functional cortex in a case of inconclusive Wada testing.

OBJECTIVES: The intracarotid amobarbital test (Wada test) currently represents the gold standard for preoperative lateralization of hemispheric dominance. Here, we report an epileptic patient with a longstanding extended lesion of the left hemisphere showing absence of motor and speech dysfunction with left carotid amobarbital injection, but tetraplegia and speech arrest with right carotid injection interpreted as a neuroplastic shift of motor and language functions to the right hemisphere. In contrast to the Wada results, motor functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) showed a strong left
