Adverse glycaemic effects of cancer therapy: indications for a rational approach to cancer patients with diabetes.

Diabetes and cancer are common, chronic, and potentially fatal diseases that frequently co-exist. Observational studies have reported an increased risk of cancer in patients with diabetes. Furthermore, many patients with cancer already have diabetes, or develop hyperglycaemia as a consequence of the tumor or of cancer therapies, and coexisting diabetes confers a greater risk of mortality for many malignancies. Managing oncologic patients with diabetes is often complicated, since the co-existence of diabetes and cancer poses several complex clinical questions: what level of glycaemic control to

Family Medicine and Emergency Redeployment: Unrealized Potential.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Discussions of scope of practice among family physicians has become a crucial topic amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with new attention to residency training requirements. Family medicine has seen a gradual narrowing of practice due to a host of issues, including physician choice, expanding scope of practice from physician assistants and nurses, an increased emphasis on patient volume, clinical revenue, and residency training competency requirements. We sought to demonstrate the flexibility of the family medicine workforce as shown through their scopes of practi

Midwifery theories: A scoping review.

PROBLEM: The identification of midwifery theories will contribute to the identification of a midwifery model of care for women experiencing low-risk pregnancies, and to support its implementation in Portugal. BACKGROUND: Previous research has explored the concept of woman-centredness as the core principle underpinning midwifery practice, mapped existing midwifery models of care, synthesized multiple theories and the scope of midwifery to achieve conceptual integration, and identified the aspects of midwifery care that most significantly contribute to the quality of care for women and their ba

Primary care health issues among men who have sex with men.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the article is to examine "appropriate" health care for men who have sex with men (MSM), which is not to suggest "special" health care. As a group, MSM are at increased risk for sexually transmitted infections, anal cancer, and mental health disorders. Focus areas in this article will address health issues that the primary care nurse practitioner (NP) may encounter in clinical practice: anal carcinoma, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), high-risk sexual practices, depression, and substance abuse were topics chosen for inclusion in this article. These topics were amon

Partner-Engaged Pragmatic Research in Aging Care: Case Studies from the Long-Term Care Quality & Innovation Lab.

Since 2015, the Long-Term Care Quality & Innovation (Q&I) Lab at the Brown University School of Public Health has advanced pragmatic, partner-engaged research to improve care for older adults and chronically ill individuals receiving post-acute and long-term care. Rather than evaluating interventions under controlled conditions, Q&I researchers conduct embedded studies in real-world care settings, working with clinicians and frontline staff to implement interventions and assess their effectiveness and feasibility in routine practice. In parallel, researchers also collaborate with health system

Planning for research impact.

BACKGROUND: Several drivers are currently leading to greater emphasis of the importance of ensuring research has impact. Nursing research aims to improve patient care, safety and well-being, so it might be assumed results with the potential to effect such changes would automatically have an impact on clinical practice. However, experience suggests this is not the case and careful attention is needed for there to be an impact. AIM: To present the example of a project commissioned to develop a health communication tool to support people with learning disabilities in accessing healthcare. DISCU

Application of the COM-B model to barriers and facilitators to chlamydia testing in general practice for young people and primary care practitioners: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia is a major public health concern, with high economic and social costs. In 2016, there were over 200,000 chlamydia diagnoses made in England. The highest prevalence rates are found among young people. Although annual testing for sexually active young people is recommended, many do not receive testing. General practice is one ideal setting for testing, yet attempts to increase testing in this setting have been disappointing. The Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation Model of Behaviour (COM-B model) may help improve understanding of the underpinnings of chlamydia testing.

Cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric validation of the ISBAR structured handover observation tool for ICU-to-ward patient transfer in China.

The Identity, Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation (ISBAR) framework is used to standardize clinical handovers. Effective ISBAR implementation requires both training and objective assessment of handover. In Chinese clinical settings, handover quality is commonly evaluated through self-reports or locally developed checklists, which provide limited information about the completeness and accuracy of information transfer. The absence of validated Chinese observational instruments restricts the identification of communication deficiencies, benchmarking of handover performance, and deve

Psychological distress and Africentric coping strategies among nurses in Ghana: prevalence, correlates and predictors.

BACKGROUND: Nursing is intrinsically demanding, exposing practitioners to substantial workloads, emotional labour, and systemic healthcare challenges that contribute to significant psychological distress. In Ghana, the compounding effects of structural deficiencies within the healthcare system make nurses particularly vulnerable. However, research on culturally informed coping strategies within this population remains limited. This study examined the association between psychological distress and Africentric coping strategies among 248 nurses in public healthcare facilities in the Central and

The predictive value of nurse-led preoperative frailty assessment for postoperative delirium in liver transplant recipients: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a severe and frequent complication after liver transplantation (LT), associated with increased morbidity and healthcare utilization. Frailty represents a clinically measurable state of diminished physiological reserve and increased vulnerability to stressors. The predictive value of a structured, nurse-led frailty assessment for POD in LT recipients requires rigorous evaluation. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled adults who underwent first-time liver transplantation from 2020 to 2024 at a single center. Patients with severe pre-existing cogn

Physical Labour, Dignity Preservation, and Weight Stigma in Nurses' Care for Larger-Bodied Patients in Acute Care Settings: A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Acute care systems serve patients across a wide range of body sizes. For some larger-bodied patients, nursing care may become more physically demanding when body size and mobility needs interact with limitations in equipment, staffing, space, and workflows. These conditions may also challenge dignity preservation and contribute to weight stigma. AIM: To synthesize qualitative evidence on nurses' experiences of caring for larger-bodied adults described in the source literature using obesity-related classifications in acute care settings, and to examine how physical labour, dignity

Medication safety in emergency departments: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Medication safety competence is a critical component of patient safety, particularly in emergency departments (EDs), where high-acuity conditions and workflow instability increase vulnerability to medication-related errors. Despite extensive research on medication safety, limited attention has been given to how medication safety competence is enacted within emergency department settings. METHODS: A convergent mixed-methods design was employed. Data were collected between July and September 2024 from two large urban tertiary teaching hospitals. Quantitative data were obtained from
