Prevention of low birthweight.

Globally an estimated 20 million infants are born with low birthweight (LBW), of those over 18 million are born in developing countries. These LBW infants are at a disproportionately higher risk of mortality, morbidity, poor growth, impaired psychomotor and cognitive development as immediate outcomes, and are also disadvantaged as adults due to their greater susceptibility to type 2 diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease. Maternal malnutrition prior to and during pregnancy manifested by low bodyweight, short stature, inadequate energy intake during pregnancy and coexisting micronutr

Use of TPN in terminally ill cancer patients.

Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is often used as an adjunct to cancer therapy. However, it is increasingly being used in terminally ill cancer patients without clearly defined reasons. To determine the validity of the use of TPN in terminally ill cancer patients, 26 patients with limited life expectancy due to end-stage cancer were given TPN by their physicians, and the validity of its use was evaluated using the criteria of 1) quality of life, and 2) ultimate outcome. Patients were divided into two groups according to the use of TPN. Group I = TPN as adjunct of medical therapy, n = 15 (eight

Implementation of Hospital Practices Supportive of Breastfeeding in the Context of COVID-19 - United States, July 15-August 20, 2020.

Breastfeeding has health benefits for both infants and mothers and is recommended by numerous health and medical organizations*,† (1). The birth hospitalization is a critical period for establishing breastfeeding; however, some hospital practices, particularly related to mother-newborn contact, have given rise to concern about the potential for mother-to-newborn transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) (2). CDC conducted a COVID-19 survey (July 15-August 20, 2020) among 1,344 hospitals that completed the 2018 Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition

Dietary experiences and support needs of women who gain weight following chemotherapy for breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Weight gain is common but poorly understood in women receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer. Overweight and obesity are associated with other co-morbidities, reduced self-esteem and an increased risk of cancer recurrence. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences, dietary information and support needs of women who gain weight during chemotherapy treatment. METHODS: This study used a qualitative approach to explore the experiences of women from three Melbourne breast cancer clinics. Those who gained weight during the period of enrolment in a cohort study of chemothera

Critical Factors Influencing the Uptake of Breastfeeding Support Interventions in Neonatal Intensive Care Units: A Scoping Review.

Background: Breastfeeding is considered the optimal source of nutrition for infants admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). Despite these well-documented benefits, establishing and sustaining breastfeeding in NICU settings remains challenging due to inadequate uptake of breastfeeding support measures. This scoping review aimed to examine the evidence on factors influencing the uptake of breastfeeding support practices in NICUs. Methods: The search was undertaken across four electronic databases: PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library. Primary studies published in English

Modifiable Nutritional Biomarkers in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Vitamin D, B12, and Homocysteine Exposure Spanning Prenatal Development Through Late Adolescence.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been associated with disruptions in one-carbon metabolism and vitamin D pathways. Nutritional exposures-particularly vitamin D, vitamin B12, and homocysteine-may influence neurodevelopmental outcomes. However, a comprehensive, lifespan-spanning synthesis of these modifiable nutritional biomarkers has not been conducted. This systematic review and stratified meta-analysis critically synthesized data on vitamin D, vitamin B12, and homocysteine to elucidate their relationships with ASD risk and symptomatology. Our central question was: How do levels of vitamin D

Predictors of Direct Breastfeeding in Preterm Infants.

Objective: Rates of mother's own milk (MOM) provision in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) vary widely, despite acceptance as the gold standard for nutrition in preterm infants. Direct breastfeeding (DBF) supports long-term provision of MOM, but factors that support DBF in preterm infants are unknown. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that predict DBF at oral feeding initiation and at NICU discharge. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of preterm infants born at ≤ 32 weeks who were receiving MOM at 32 weeks corrected gestational age (cohort 1) and at discharge

Beyond Frailty in Pancreatic Surgery: Toward a Pancreas-Specific Surgical Vulnerability Framework.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is an important determinant of postoperative outcomes after pancreatic surgery. However, available assessment instruments are heterogeneous and may inadequately capture the interaction between patient vulnerability, nutritional status, body composition, and procedure-specific risk. This systematic review evaluated frailty assessment tools in pancreatic surgery and proposed a conceptual pancreas-specific framework for surgical vulnerability assessment. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Scie

Self-management strategies for menstrual cycle symptoms: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Menstrual cycle symptoms, such as discomfort, fatigue, and mood swings, are prevalent among women and can significantly diminish quality of life. Many women employ non-clinical, self-management strategies to mitigate symptoms, yet the supporting evidence for these strategies is equivocal. This systematic review sought to identify, evaluate and synthesise existing evidence from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) for non-clinical, self-management strategies for menstrual cycle symptoms. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochra

[Hypercaloric poultry meat product for enteral nutrition].

UNLABELLED: Enteral nutrition is considered an important component of nutritional support in all clinical groups of patients. Poultry meat in the human diet is a source of complete protein with high digestibility, a number of minerals, vitamins, trace elements and bioactive compounds. In this regard, the development of an enteral product based on poultry meat intended for probe nutrition and/or oral consumption can be considered an urgent task, allowing to expand the range of foods for special dietary uses. The aim of the work was to develop a formulation and technology for a sterilized hyperc…

Association of logarithmic lymphocyte-albumin product with active tuberculosis in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Active tuberculosis (ATB) in children and adolescents remains a major diagnostic challenge. Inflammation, nutrition, and immune status are closely linked to tuberculosis (TB) progression. We therefore proposed a novel biomarker, the logarithmic lymphocyte-albumin product (logLAP), integrating immune and nutritional indicators, and investigated its association with ATB in children and adolescents. METHODS: This retrospective study included 1,080 participants aged <18 years. Participants were classified into ATB (n = 904) and non-TB (n = 176) groups. LAP was calculated as lymphocyte
