AIM: To evaluate the functional results of the orthopaedic treatment of midshaft clavicle fractures with a minimum follow-up of 15 years.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 40 patients, mean age 35 years (18-64) with a non-surgically treated clavicle fracture. The mean follow-up was more than 22 years (15-32). The clinical evaluation was performed with the Disability of Arm, Shoulder and Hand score (DASH), Constant Shoulder Score test (CSS), EVA score, and a subjective assessment of the final result. Fractures were classified according to Neer's criteria. The radiolo

BACKGROUND: This report presents early results of surgical experience of minimal invasive extrathoracic presternal compression using a metal bar for correction of the pectus carinatum.
METHODS: From February 2008 to February 2012, 15 patients with combined pectus carinatum and pectus excavatum underwent minimal invasive extrathoracic presternal compression using a metal bar for correction of pectus carinatum and Nuss operation for pectus excavatum. After 2 years, bar removal was done in all patients. In this paper, we focused on pectus carinatum repair. The effects and complications of the mi

The midfoot is a complex association of five bones and many articulations between the forefoot metatarsals and the talus and calcaneus, which make up the hindfoot. These anatomic relationships are connected and restrained by an even more complex network of ligaments, capsules, and fascia, which must function as a unit to provide normal and painless locomotion. The common eponyms of Lisfranc and Chopart refer to the distal and proximal joint relationships of the midfoot, respectively. Midfoot injuries range from single ligament strains to complicated fracture-dislocations involving multiple bon

We describe a rare experience with the treatment of a patient with finger flexion contracture caused by muscular involvement of sarcoidosis, who had been misdiagnosed as having a trigger finger and underwent surgical release of the A1 pulley of her little finger. This report serves as a reminder that muscular involvement of sarcoidosis can cause finger flexion contractures.

OBJECTIVE: To report the outcomes of distraction-based, growth-sparing spinal instrumentation in patients with skeletal dysplasia.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Patients with skeletal dysplasia with spinal deformity often undergo early fusion, further compromising an already small chest. Nonfusion techniques may provide a safe alternative and allow for thoracic growth.
METHODS: Between 2004 and 2010, 12 children with a diagnosis of various types of skeletal dysplasia underwent growth-sparing spinal instrumentation for severe spinal deformities. The mea

Oncogenic osteomalacia is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome induced by mesenchymal tumors. Just over 100 cases have been reported for this rare disorder, and only seven instances were caused by phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors of the spine. The authors present an illustrative case of a 61-year-old woman with oncogenic osteomalacia induced by a tumor of the spine, and review the literature describing the clinical presentation, surgical treatment, and follow-up of this syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Ankle valgus is encountered in children with a variety of congenital musculoskeletal disorders, including multiple hereditary exostoses (MHE). Guided growth with temporary distal tibial medial hemiepiphysiodesis (DTMH) may correct the deformity; however, exostoses about the ankle commonly observed in MHE patients may hinder correction and increase the risk of recurrence. Thus, the purpose of this study was to review the outcomes of DTMH in treatment of ankle valgus in MHE versus other diagnosis (non-MHE).
METHODS: Medical records and radiographs of patients undergoing DTMH for ank

Subtalar joint arthroereisis is a surgical modality that has been shown to be an effective procedure for flexible flatfoot in both pediatric and adult populations. Despite advances in understanding its mechanics and function, complication and implant removal rates remain as high as 30% to 40%. Analysis was performed to determine the survivability of 2 subtalar joint arthroereisis implants, absorbable and nonabsorbable, used alone and in combination with other procedures in both the adult and pediatric populations. The 95 total arthroereisis procedures were analyzed in several major categories:

BACKGROUND: Proximal femoral deformities and overcorrection of the acetabulum both can result in secondary femoroacetabular impingement and suboptimal clinical results after periacetabular osteotomy. The purpose of the present study was to determine the rate of complications, the need for reoperations, radiographic correction, and hip function among patients who underwent periacetabular osteotomy and combined femoral head-neck osteochondroplasty as compared with those who underwent periacetabular osteotomy alone.
METHODS: Patients who underwent periacetabular osteotomy with or without osteoch

BACKGROUND: The comparative clinical outcome of medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction (MPFLR) using semitendinosus tendons with and without polyester suture augmentation for recurrent patellar instability is unknown.
HYPOTHESIS: Medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction with polyester suture augmentation will yield better results than MPFLR without augmentation for recurrent patellar instability in adults.
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 2.
METHODS: One hundred patients with recurrent patellar instability receiving MPFLR using semitendinosus tendons

BACKGROUND: Anterior instability in rugby players is characterized by the common finding of a bony lesion, which has been identified as a potential cause of recurrence after soft-tissue reconstruction. The Latarjet-Patte procedure is effective in the treatment of recurrent anterior instability in collision sports such as rugby union.
METHODS: We retrospectively assessed 34 rugby players (37 shoulders) stabilized with the Latarjet-Patte procedure. The mean follow-up was 12 years. All patients underwent clinical and radiographic assessment preoperatively and at final follow-up. Functional evalu

Dupuytren's disease in infants has been rarely reported. We present a congenital case with the onset of the disorder since his birth. A 31-month-old boy with congenital flexion contracture of his left long and ring finger was suspected to the diagnosis. To correct the deformity and confirm the diagnosis, fascieotomy was performed. Postoperative histopathological examination proved the diagnosis. No recurrence and functional disturbance of the hand were observed at 21 months' follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Surgical lengthening is used to address both overactivity and shortening of the spastic agonist muscle in children with cerebral palsy. It has been presumed that the function of the antagonist muscle will improve when the spastic agonist muscle has been surgically lengthened. The purposes of the current study were to use quantitative gait analysis to determine the prevalence of the ankle dorsiflexor muscles (antagonist) dysfunction during the swing phase of the gait cycle and to analyze how this function is affected following surgical lengthening of the ankle plantar flexor muscles

Peroneal tendon pathology is rare, but is probably underestimated because it is frequently undiagnosed. It should always be in the differential diagnosis of lateral ankle pain. Surgical treatment of peroneal tendinopathy is indicated after failure of conservative measures. The aim of this retrospective study is to evaluate the medium-term clinical results of 17 patients operated for peroneal tendinopathy without tendon subluxation. A series of 17 patients composed of 7 women and 10 men with a mean age of 53.6 ± 4.6 (range 45 to 60) years were reviewed. The mean preoperative Kitaoka score was 4

Ruptures of the peroneus longus tendon are uncommon, with a small number of case reports found in published studies. The presence of an os peroneum can predispose the peroneus longus tendon to rupture at the cuboid level with or without concomitant fracture, or fracture through a partite os peroneum. Whether the os peroneum can be represented by various stages of ossification is still a matter of debate. We present 2 cases of acute peroneus longus tendon rupture at the cuboid notch in the presence of an intact os peroneum in the ossified and nonossified form. We treated patients with excision

BACKGROUND: Although many children with spina bifida and associated scoliosis or dislocated hips undergo spine or hip surgery, the benefits are uncertain.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purpose was to perform an evidence-based review on the benefits and risks of surgery for dislocated hips and scoliosis in spina bifida.
METHODS: I performed a Medline(®) and Embase(®) search from 1950 to 2009 for Level I to Level III studies investigating the benefits and risks of surgery for scoliosis and hip dislocation in patients with spina bifida. When available, I extracted types of surgery, complication rates

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of treated clubfoot disorder on gross motor skill level measured by the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS).
METHODS: Fifty-two babies participated: 26 were treated for idiopathic clubfoot (12 with the Ponseti treatment method, 9 with the French physical therapy technique, and 5 with a combination of both methods); 26 were babies who were typically developing and without medical diagnoses. The AIMS was administered at 3-month intervals.
RESULTS: No significant differences in AIMS scores were found between the clubfoot and control groups at 3 and 6 months, but
