A novel adaptive sigma KNN model for depression and anxiety detection following the COVID 19 pandemic.

Mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are increasing, and thus, there is a necessity for accurate and effective detection. K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and extensions have been extensively used in disease detection. In this work, Adaptive Sigma KNN (ASKNN) is proposed, an improved version of KNN that adapts neighbor influence dynamically with an adaptive sigma parameter, enhancing predictive accuracy and stability in mental health classification. ASKNN is tested on our dataset and various public mental health and benchmark medical datasets. Performance has been measured through

Development of a Conceptual Framework of Health Misinformation During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Systematic Review of Reviews.

BACKGROUND: Despite the wide variety of studies that have focused on the recent COVID-19 infodemic, defining health mis- or disinformation remains a challenge due to the dynamic nature of the social media ecosystem and, in particular, the different terminologies from different fields of knowledge. OBJECTIVE: In this work, we aim to develop a conceptual framework of health misinformation during pandemic contexts that will enable the establishment of an interoperable definition of this concept and consequently a better management of these problems in the future. METHODS: We conducted a systema

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on telework and short sickness absences among Finnish knowledge workers.

INTRODUCTION: Longitudinal studies are rare for associations between telework and sickness absence (SA). This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate short (1-3 days) SA from 2019 to 2023 among a cohort of Finnish knowledge workers and the role of telework in short SA. METHODS: Complete employer-owned register data on SA and telework were available from four organizations for 2019-2023, comprising 924 employees. Weekly means of telework days/week and short (1-3 days) SA days were calculated and analyzed using conditional Poisson with fixed-effects to obtain incidence rate ratios (IRRs)

The COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on dental practice at the University Clinical Dentistry Center of Kosovo.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on dental practices worldwide, and the University Clinical Dentistry Center of Kosovo was no exception. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the pandemic on dental practice, patient management, and antibiotic use in the absence of routine dental care. In March 2020, Kosovo's Ministry of Health mandated the suspension of non-emergency dental services to mitigate the spread of the virus, which led to an increased reliance on antibiotics to manage dental infections remotely. METHODS: This qualitative study used semi-structured inte

Ego-Resiliency and Coping Styles in Patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background and Objectives: In the difficult socio-economic situation of recent years, particular attention has been paid to factors that may have a protective effect on mental health. One of these factors is the individual resource known as ego-resiliency. The aim of the study was to assess ego-resiliency as a potential protective factor against stress symptoms and to determine effective coping strategies in a group of patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted from March 2020 to March 2022 among patients attend

Genetic predisposition and increased environmental allergen exposure in cat allergy: The pandemic is a very good example.

OBJECTIVE: Domestic cats are among the most common sources of indoor allergens. There was an increase in indoor allergen exposure, especially cats and house dust mites, as people spent more time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. In this study, our aim was to examine the frequency of cat sensitization and ownership after the COVID-19 pandemic and its relationship with other indoor and pollen allergen sensitizations. METHODS: The data of patients who applied to our clinic between 2018 and 2022, with a history of hypersensitivity reaction after contact with cats and diagnosed with

Mental health changes during and after the COVID-19 pandemic in children and adolescents with mental disorders.

The COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected child and adolescent mental health, but it is unclear which subgroups were affected most. We investigated to what extent severity and type of mental health problems during and after the pandemic were related to preexisting mental disorders in children in care at child and adolescent mental health services. We employed a repeated cross-sectional design involving data collection at seven time points (April 2020 to April 2023) in a total sample of 2,545 children (age 8-18 years). We grouped diagnostic classifications in four categories: Autism, ADHD, Anxi

Work-family-self-care and day drinking among women during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The term "day drinking" is used colloquially to refer to drinking alcohol during daytime hours and has become part of the vernacular surrounding alcohol use. Anecdotal evidence is suggestive of increased day drinking among women during the COVID-19 pandemic, but empirical studies are few. This study assessed changes in the time of day women consumed alcoholic beverages during the pandemic and investigated whether their difficulty balancing work, family, and self-care was associated with the initiation of daytime drinking. METHODS: In June of 2020, 546 women age 25 and older comple

Impact of Covid-19 pandemic on trajectories of patients with severe alcohol use disorder treated with disulfiram.

The manifestations and progression of alcohol use disorder (AUD) are influenced by a number of contextual factors, with the current coronavirus pandemic being a significant example. This pandemic has profoundly impacted nearly all aspects of human life and has, therefore, strongly influenced patients suffering from AUD. In some cases, the pandemic has led to a reduction in severity, while in others, it has had the opposite effect. In our own work we have been investigating the negative impact of the pandemic on 45 patients with AUD who were undergoing outpatient treatment, including supervised

Impact of Telemedicine on Health Expenditures During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Japan: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: The effects of telemedicine on health expenditures and health outcomes are an important policy question. Many countries loosened regulations on the use of telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby offering an opportunity to evaluate these effects via a natural experiment. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effect of greater telemedicine use on area-level health expenditures and health outcomes related to common chronic conditions in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We compared prefectures (area levels of government) with higher prepandemic telemedicine

The Impact and Evolution of COVID-19 on Liver Transplant Recipients Throughout the Pandemic "Waves" in a Single Center.

Liver transplant recipients (LTRs) have been considered a population group that is vulnerable to COVID-19 as they are chronically immunosuppressed patients with frequent comorbidities. This study describes the course of the SARS-CoV-2 disease from February 2020 to December 2023 along seven pandemic "waves". We carried out an observational study on 307 COVID-19 cases in a cohort of LTRs with the aim of evaluating the changes in the disease characteristics over time and determining the risk factors for severe COVID-19. An older age and serum creatinine level ≥ 2 mg/dL were found to be risk facto

Indirect Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Well-Child Visits in Low-Income Children in Oklahoma.

CONTEXT: During the COVID-19 pandemic, well-child visits were widely delayed or missed. Delays in routine care are more likely for low-income individuals and families who already face barriers to attending visits. Studies in the literature indicate declines in well-child visits during the pandemic but few have focused on low-income children and none have examined children in Oklahoma. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes in well-child visit attendance during the COVID-19 pandemic in low-income children residing in Oklahoma. DESIGN AND SETTING: This retrospective cohort study used data from the Okl

Doing more with less: the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Latino-serving community-based organizations.

Community-based organizations (CBOs) played a key role in providing health and safety net support to low-income Latino communities during the COVID-19 pandemic; yet we know little about how organizations navigated challenges during this time. Understanding how CBOs navigate challenging periods is critical to ensuring a robust safety net for Latino and other underserved populations. We examined the factors that allowed CBOs to address Latino communities' needs and the potential long-term impact of the pandemic on the sustainability of their health programs. Using a case study approach, we condu
