Mapping Educational Outcomes and Implementation Challenges of Problem-Based Learning Versus Traditional Didactic Teaching in Physiotherapy Curricula: A Scoping Review.

Physiotherapy education is undergoing significant changes to address the growing complexity of clinical practice, leading to a shift from traditional didactic teaching (TDT) to learner-centred methods, such as problem-based learning (PBL). Traditional approaches focus on structured lectures and memorization, whereas active learning emphasizes the clinical context and learner autonomy. This scoping review examines and synthesises the global peer-reviewed literature comparing PBL and TDT in physical therapy curricula to thoroughly assess cognitive outcomes, student engagement, and implementation

Transforming a Pandemic Tool Into a Public Health Asset: Modified Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, over 100 countries successfully deployed smartphone-based exposure notification (EN) apps alongside conventional contact tracing to mitigate the transmission of SARS-CoV-2. These systems enabled millions of COVID-19-positive individuals to anonymously alert community members of a potential exposure. Although evidence on EN program implementation is limited, leveraging expertise from public health professionals, academics, and global implementers from various disciplines can contribute to addressing this research gap. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to exp

Improving the tuberculosis infection care cascade among migrants in Canada: a cost-effectiveness modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis elimination requires expanded use of preventive treatment. However, adherence to the tuberculosis infection cascade of care is often an issue, notably in vulnerable groups such as migrants. We aimed to assess a person-centred approach to tuberculosis screening and treatment using facilitators, comparing strategies for tuberculosis prevention among new migrants to Canada. METHODS: We modelled a cohort of 100 000 adults representing the demographic profile of migrants from countries with an annual tuberculosis incidence of 50 cases or higher per 100 000 population. A Ma

Knowledge, compliance, and challenges in anti-malarial products usage: a systematic review of at-risk communities for zoonotic malaria.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic malaria is a growing public health threat in the WHO Southeast Asia (SEA) and Western Pacific (WP) regions. Despite vector-control measures, the distribution of Macaque fascicularis and M. nemestrina, and Anopheles mosquitoes carrying non-human simian malaria parasites poses challenges to malaria elimination. The systematic review assesses the literature on knowledge and malaria-preventive practices in zoonotic malaria-affected areas across the WHO SEA and WP, aiming to identify challenges for malaria control. METHODS: Peer-reviewed articles published in English, Malay an

Understanding the use of media analysis in public health research through food tax debates (HEALTHEI Project): a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Poor diet is a major public health concern. In 2021, 63·8% of adults and 22·2% of reception-age children were either overweight or obese in England. Fiscal interventions have become a popular policy measure to reduce obesity and encourage healthy eating. Such measures are highly controversial, leading to media debate promoting pro-tax and anti-tax arguments. To better understand food tax debates and the use of media analysis in public health research, we conducted a scoping review of media analyses using food taxes as a case study. METHODS: In this scoping review, we searched SCOP

Human Health Risks of Conducted Electrical Weapon Exposure: A Systematic Review.

IMPORTANCE: Conducted electrical weapons (CEWs) are used broadly as a less-lethal force option for police officers. However, there is no clear picture of the possible health risks in humans on the basis of rigorously assessed scientific evidence from the international peer-reviewed literature. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize and systematically evaluate the strength of published evidence for an association between exposure to different models of CEWs and adverse acute as well as chronic conditions. EVIDENCE REVIEW: Following a preregistered review protocol, the literature search strategy was based o

Effectiveness of interventions for changing HIV related risk behaviours among key populations in low-income setting: A Meta-Analysis, 2001-2016.

The aim of this review was to conduct a meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of behavioural interventions to reduce HIV-related risk behaviours among key populations: people who inject drugs, female sex workers, men who have sex with men and transgender in Nepal over the last two decades. Using four electronic databases, we performed a systematic search of the literature on HIV interventions implemented in Nepal and published from January 2001 to December 2016. In addition, grey literature was also scrutinised for potential articles. The search focussed specifically on behavioural interve

HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of persons with and without disabilities from the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey 2011: Differential access to HIV/AIDS information and services.

Uganda is among the first to use the Washington Group Short Set of Questions on Disability to identify persons with disabilities in its Demographic and Health Survey. In this paper, we review the HIV Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviour component of the 2011 Ugandan Demographic and Health Survey, analysing a series of questions comparing those with and without disabilities in relation to HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and practices. We found comparable levels of knowledge on HIV/AIDS for those with and those without disabilities in relation to HIV transmission during delivery (93.89%, 93.26%) and

Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in Hispanic Adolescents in South Texas.

OBJECTIVES: Despite a national crisis of increased prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus in adolescents, especially among Hispanics, there is a paucity of data on health indicators among farmworker adolescents and their peers. The main aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors in a population of Hispanic adolescent students in south Texas. The study also aimed to compare the prevalence of these risk factors between students enrolled in the Migrant Education Program (MEP) and other students, and between boys and girls. METHODS: In part

Effect of different cochlear implantation timings on long-term language development outcomes of pediatric unilateral cochlear implant cases.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation provides an opportunity for children with congenital severe to profound hearing loss to acquire spoken language. However, as multiple factors influence language outcomes after cochlear implantation, language development performance can vary between individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study participants (n = 150) were divided into three groups according to age at cochlear implantation: Group 1, 12-24 months; Group 2, 25-36 months; and Group 3, 37-48 months. The effect of age at implantation on auditory perception and language development performance was

Social-Emotional Functioning and Quality of Life in Language Disorders: A Systematic Review of Development From Childhood to Adolescence.

BACKGROUND: It is well-established that children and adolescents with developmental language disorder (DLD) have social-emotional difficulties. This is reflected in their behaviour, for instance, by (social) withdrawal, hyperactivity or difficulty with peer relations. Children with DLD are also known to have poorer quality of life (QoL). This is likely to be related to social-emotional difficulties, for both concern similar developmental domains but from a different point of view. Findings on the social-emotional abilities, QoL and predictors thereof in children with DLD are inconsistent acros

Teacher communication style and adolescent human papillomavirus vaccination in Bangkok schools.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is central to cervical cancer prevention, but uptake depends on communication as well as access. Teachers can shape how adolescents and families understand school-linked vaccination, although communication style has been studied less than clinician recommendation. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether teacher advice and communication style were associated with adolescent HPV vaccination and whether associations differed between younger and older adolescents. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted parallel cross-sectional surveys among parents or legal guardians

Barriers to Belonging: How Stigma Disrupts Social Roles for Malawian Adolescents Living with HIV and Opportunities for Change.

BackgroundHuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) stigma has detrimental impacts on HIV care outcomes, mental health, and psychosocial well-being. Adolescents living with HIV (ALWH) in Malawi experience HIV stigma as gossip, insults, and physical distancing, contributing to decreased HIV care engagement and mental health issues including depression, substance use disorders, and suicidality. To inform future stigma-reduction interventions for this vulnerable population, we investigate how HIV stigma impacts an ALWH's ability to meaningfully participate in their social roles and responsibilities.Meth

"There is no need to leave the beach to test": a qualitative study of HIV self-testing knowledge and acceptability of HIV self-test kit distribution among social networks of fishermen in Western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: HIV self-testing (HIVST) can improve HIV testing uptake by offering convenience and privacy. Yet HIVST accessibility and uptake remain limited in Lake Victoria beach communities where HIVST holds promise to address many barriers highly mobile populations of men in fishing communities face. We assessed HIVST knowledge and acceptability among highly mobile fishermen, a high priority population for HIV prevention and treatment, participating in a social network-based study ("Owete"; NCT04772469) to promote HIV testing, prevention, and treatment in Kenya. METHODS: Sixty-five in-depth

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and Disorders: An Overview of Peer-Reviewed Publications 2018-2022.

Context Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) has been claimed to be effective in various human disorders and conditions. There have been many anecdotal claims to lend credence to the efficacy of this treatment modality. Recently, much work has been done in evidence-based, government-funded projects, and clinical trials in OMM research, and these studies have further demonstrated the efficacy of OMM as direct, integrated, or complementary mechanisms in treating various conditions. Objectives As the field of OMM research has grown significantly in the past few years, we set out to analyze the
