Both hypo- and hyperkalemic periodic paralysis may be difficult to diagnose conclusively when patients are not seen during attacks. Since paralysis of both types can be induced with ACTH, we have determined the frequency of this response in small groups of patients. Weakness or paralysis with appropriate changes in serum K concentration resulted from ACTH gel administration, in 4 of 5 patients with known hypokalemic periodic paralysis and in 3 of 3 patients with hyperkalemic paralysis. Statistics from the Swedish National Cancer Registry based on all 110,658 cases of invasive breast cancer during the 31-year period 1958-1988 were analysed. Age-specific incidence rates increased over successive calendar periods. The average annual increase in the age-standardised incidence rate was 1.3%, with the greatest percentage changes among the youngest age groups. Four, 7-, and 10-wk dry periods were randomly assigned to 366 dairy cows in eight herds. A multiple polytomous logistic regression analysis was conducted with the objective to reveal possible important effects of the dry period on the risk of contracting major clinical health disorders. The author prospectively evaluated the value of periodic mammographic surveillance among 3,184 consecutive cases of nonpalpable, probably benign breast lesions detected with mammography. Follow-up consisted of four mammographic examinations during a 3- or 3.5-year period. The present report deals with the description of craniofacial morphology and growth in an achondroplastic boy followed for a 10-year period. The methods included roentgencephalometry, and metallic implants were inserted in both jaws. Thereby it became possible to differentiate between displacement of the jaws and their bone remodelling. The study showed that in the patient analyzed the primary cause of the worsening of the sagittal jaw relationship was to be found in the growth disturbances of the cranial base rather than in the growth of the jaws per se.

37 patients had been reviewed after surgical (n = 25) or conservative (n = 12) treatment of condylar fractures. Morphologic and functional outcomes were equal in spite of the poorer starting position of the patients that had been operated on. Injuries and complications due to the operation, such as facial nerve palsy, growth inhibition or obvious scars have never been found. Conservatively treated and operated patients alike showed a moderate limitation of opening and mediotrusion on the fracture side, and both groups showed a flattening of the protrusion path.

Myopathy accompanying familial hypokalaemic periodic paralysis (HPP) is much less well documented than the paralytic attacks from which the disease derives its name. Eleven affected members of a large kinship with HPP were studied clinically and radiologically for the presence of myopathy.
