Exploring the induction and measurement of positive affective state in equines through a personality-centred lens.

There is increasing focus on how to induce and measure positive affective states in animals and the development of social license to operate has brought this to the forefront within equestrianism. This study aimed to utilise a range of methods to induce and measure positive affect in horses in real-world settings. Twenty healthy horses were scored for personality, exposed to four induction methods (wither scratching, high value food provision, positive reinforcement training and the addition of an affiliative conspecific), and data collected on their behaviour (QBA and ethograms) and physiolog…

Brain functional abnormality in drug naïve adolescents with borderline personality disorder during self- and other-reflection.

A disturbed sense of identity is one of the major features of borderline personality disorder (BPD), which manifests early in the course of the disorder, and is potentially examinable using functional imaging during tasks involving self-reflection. Twenty-seven medication-naïve adolescent female patients with BPD, who had no psychiatric comorbidities, and 28 matched healthy female controls underwent fMRI while answering questions either about themselves or acquaintances. Control conditions consisted of answering questions involving factual knowledge and a low-level baseline (cross fixation). W…

Brain Structural Correlates of EEG Network Hyperexcitability, Symptom Severity, Attention, and Memory in Borderline Personality Disorder.

Introduction: Previous neuroimaging studies have reported structural brain alterations and local network hyperexcitability in terms of increased slow-wave electroencephalography (EEG) activity in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). In particular, intermittent rhythmic delta and theta activity (IRDA/IRTA) has drawn attention in mental health contexts due to its links with metabolic imbalances, neuronal stress, and emotional dysregulation-processes that are highly pertinent to BPD. These functional disturbances may be reflected in corresponding structural brain changes. The curr…

Suicidal and Self-Harming Behaviors in Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder With and Without Eating Disorders.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and eating disorders (EDs) frequently co-occur. The present study investigated whether treatment-seeking patients with BPD and a comorbid ED experienced increased risk of self-harm or suicide behaviors. In a sample of 350 patients with BPD, 61 (17.4%) had a comorbid ED: 25 (7.1%) had bulimia nervosa (BN), 15 (4.2%) had an eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS), 13 (3.7%) had bingeeating disorder (BED), and 8 (2.2%) had anorexia nervosa (AN). Comorbid BED and AN were individually significantly associated with recurrent suicide attempt over the past…

Personality functioning in adolescents: exploring the links with childhood maltreatment types and internalizing and externalizing difficulties.

BACKGROUND: The reconceptualization of the personality disorder model brought by the DSM-5 and ICD-11 introduced the level of personality functioning as the main criterion of PD, which encompasses a set of intrapsychic functions necessary for self-other understanding in interpersonal contexts. Research interest has been growing in examining the relationship between childhood traumatic experiences and personality functioning, predominantly with adult populations; however, there is a notable scarcity of studies exploring these associations in adolescents. AIMS: The aim of the present study was …

Examining the association among eating disorders and borderline personality disorder: evidence from youth in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a complex psychiatric condition manifest by persistent instability in emotions, relationships, self-perception, and behavior. Eating disorders (EDs) are multifaceted neuropsychiatric conditions involving dysfunctional eating behaviors and psychological impairments, leading to adverse health outcomes and reduced quality of life. They are also associated with some of the highest mortality rates in psychiatry. EDs are typically classified to three main types: anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED). Personal…

Construction and Validation of the Identity Crisis and Histrionic Personality Disorder Scale for Young Adult Girls.

Background This study centers on the development and validation of a psychometric scale designed to assess identity crisis and histrionic personality disorder (HPD), addressing a significant gap in current diagnostic tools. Identity crises, often characterized by confusion about one's self-concept and societal roles, commonly emerge during adolescence and can lead to maladaptive behaviors. HPD, marked by attention-seeking and emotional dysregulation, shares notable overlaps with identity crises, particularly in disrupted self-concept and a heightened dependence on external validation. Methods …

Brain Functional Correlates of Recall of Life Events in Medication-Naïve Adolescents with Borderline Personality Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Recall of autobiographical events has been found to be impaired in borderline personality disorder (BPD), but few studies have examined if this impairment has brain functional correlates. This study evaluated brain functional alterations during autobiographical recall using medication-naive adolescent patients to avoid potential confounding effects of treatment. METHODS: Thirty-two adolescent female patients with BPD who were never-medicated and without psychiatric comorbidity and 33 matched healthy females underwent fMRI while they viewed individualized cue words that evoked au…

Transdiagnostic clustering of self-schema from self-referential judgements identifies subtypes of healthy personality and depression.

INTRODUCTION: The heterogeneity of depressive and anxiety disorders complicates clinical management as it may account for differences in trajectory and treatment response. Self-schemas, which can be determined by Self-Referential Judgements (SRJs), are heterogeneous yet stable. SRJs have been used to characterize personality in the general population and shown to be prognostic in depressive and anxiety disorders. METHODS: In this study, we used SRJs from a Self-Referential Encoding Task (SRET) to identify clusters from a clinical sample of 119 patients recruited from the Institute of Mental H…

Large language models know how the personality of public figures is perceived by the general public.

We show that people's perceptions of public figures' personalities can be accurately predicted from their names' location in GPT-3's semantic space. We collected Big Five personality perceptions of 226 public figures from 600 human raters. Cross-validated linear regression was used to predict human perceptions from public figures' name embeddings extracted from GPT-3. The models' accuracy ranged from r = .78 to .88 without controls and from r = .53 to .70 when controlling for public figures' likability and demographics, after correcting for attenuation. Prediction models showed high face valid…

Borderline Personality Traits Do Not Moderate the Relationship Between Depression, Beliefs, and Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors.

Adults with clinically significant borderline personality disorder traits (BPTs) are at high risk of experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs). STBs among those with BPTs have been associated with suicidal beliefs (e.g., that one is unlovable or that distress is intolerable). However, the extent to which suicidal beliefs uniquely mediate the relationship between emotional distress and STBs among individuals with BPTs is not known. Individuals admitted to an inpatient unit (N = 198) with recent STBs completed assessments of BPTs, depression, suicidal beliefs, suicidal ideation, and su…

The relationship between gastrointestinal symptoms in FGID patients and D-type personality and emotion regulation strategies.

This study examines the relationship between gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) and type D personality traits, as well as emotion regulation strategies. Analyzing a diverse group of FGID patients, we uncover significant effects of gender and age on gastrointestinal symptoms. Negative Affectivity emerges as a key predictor, positively associated with symptom severity, whereas Social Inhibition correlates negatively with Abdominal Pain. Additionally, our findings suggest that the expressive suppression strategy predicts heightened gastrointes…
