Exploring the Impact of Digital Health Tools in Enhancing Quality of Life and Psychological Adjustment in Long-term Blood Donors: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Blood donation plays a critical role in public health, yet long-term donors (donating at least twice per year, for at least three years) often face challenges related to psychological adjustment and quality of life. Digital health tools could offer innovative solutions to address these issues by providing personalized support, tracking, and mental health interventions. AIM: This study investigates the impact of digital health tools on the quality of life (QoL) and psychological adjustment of long-term blood donors in Saudi Arabia, with attention to demographic factors influencing

The posterolateral ligament of the elbow: anatomy and clinical relevance.

BACKGROUND: The posterolateral capsule was recognized in the past as an important structure for elbow stability but was later disregarded. Two recent biomechanical studies demonstrated its role in preventing posterolateral instability, and thus it should be identified as a distinct ligament: the posterolateral ligament (PLL). This study includes 2 parts: an anatomic study of the PLL's footprint and a collection of 5 cases of pathologic lesions of the PLL. METHODS: Six cadaveric upper limbs were assessed. The attachments of the PLL were dissected, the footprints were marked and photographed, a

Foundational Number Sense Training Gains Are Predicted by Hippocampal-Parietal Circuits.

The development of mathematical skills in early childhood relies on number sense, the foundational ability to discriminate among quantities. Number sense in early childhood is predictive of academic and professional success, and deficits in number sense are thought to underlie lifelong impairments in mathematical abilities. Despite its importance, the brain circuit mechanisms that support number sense learning remain poorly understood. Here, we designed a theoretically motivated training program to determine brain circuit mechanisms underlying foundational number sense learning in female and m

Preoperative Cardiac Stress Tests Ordered in the Preoperative Evaluation Clinic: A Retrospective Review of Ordering Patterns.

BACKGROUND: The role of anesthesiologists has expanded from operating rooms to preoperative evaluation clinics. This role involves performing preoperative cardiovascular evaluation and optimization of patients before elective surgery, which can include ordering cardiac stress tests. We aimed to study the ordering patterns by anesthesiologists for preoperative cardiac stress tests, focusing on whether societal and institutional guidelines and recommendations were used. Choice of type of cardiac stress test was also examined. METHODS: A single center retrospective chart review from December 1,

Activation of the maternal caregiving system by childhood fever--a qualitative study of the experiences made by mothers with a German or a Turkish background in the care of their children.

BACKGROUND: Childhood fever represents a frequent cause to consult a primary care physician. "Fever phobia" describes a fearful and irrational view of fever shared by many parents with different cultural backgrounds. The study aims to explain the experiences of mothers of children having a fever and to analyze the role of the mothers' cultural background with regard to their experiences by comparing the accounts of mothers with a German with those from a Turkish background. Disease and context specific knowledge about the influence of culture can be important for effective counselling. METHOD

[Multicenter nursing study on the importance of nutritional support for the prevention of bedsores in the elderly at risk].

UNLABELLED: Bedsores prevention is part of the specific role of the nurse, as defined namely in the order 84-869 of the 17. July 1984. The analysis of the risk factors for the appearance of bedsores shows that immobilization, reduction of mobility linked to vigilance disorders and the urinary and faecal incontinence are major elements which justify protocols of well defined local cares. More recently, the role of undernutrition was highlighted but the recommendations lack accuracy. The proteino-energizing undernutrition is frequent among the elderly patients in hospital, reaching 60% of all th

Precision-based exercise protocols for children with cancer: a methodological approach from the European FORTEe research project.

INTRODUCTION: Children, adolescents and young adults with cancer face severely reduced exercise tolerance while undergoing treatment, which places an additional burden on their health. The FORTEe research project, a European multicenter randomized clinical trial, investigates if a precision-based exercise program (PEx) can reduce cancer-related fatigue and maintain or improve a broad range of physical and psychosocial outcomes, thereby supporting its integration into standard paediatric oncology care from the start of cancer treatment. This methodological paper describes how the protocols were

Optimising the PTSD Hub App Through Co-Production: Enhancing Digital Support for PTSD Management in Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects approximately 1 in 20 individuals, with primary care playing a crucial role in early identification and management. However, PTSD is frequently underdiagnosed in primary care settings. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the incidence of PTSD, leading to an increased demand for accessible mental health services. While NICE guidelines recommend trauma-focused therapies, access remains limited, underscoring the need for alternative strategies to support management within primary care. AIM: To optimise and refine through co-production t

A "well-kept secret": facilitators and barriers to occupational therapy referral as a component of supportive cancer care in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: People living with and beyond cancer often experience persistent physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and functional challenges that require supportive rehabilitation across the cancer continuum. Occupational therapy (OT) can address these needs by supporting daily functioning, participation, self-management, and quality of life; however, OT remains underutilized in cancer care. Because access to OT often depends on referral decisions made by oncology professionals, understanding how referral sources perceive OT and navigate referral processes is essential for improving timely acce

From co-creation to practice: a collaborative program strengthening palliative care capacity in primary health care in Ghana.

Access to palliative care in Ghana remains limited, with services concentrated in urban centers and few healthcare professionals trained in this area. Within a primary health care (PHC) framework, strengthening palliative care capacity at the frontline is essential to achieving equitable access and achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). To address this gap, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the University of Toronto co-created a short course in palliative care for primary care providers, grounded in adult learning principles and experiential pedagogy. Between 2023 and

Knowledge, attitudes and practices of health care professionals towards pharmacovigilance in Georgia.

INTRODUCTION: Pharmacovigilance (PV) is fundamental for public health, focusing on the detection, evaluation, and prevention of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). ADRs significantly contribute to global morbidity and mortality. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) play a crucial role in ensuring drug safety, as their expertise is essential for the timely identification, management, and reporting of ADRs. Despite the importance of PV, underreporting remains a critical challenge, particularly in developing countries. The PV system in Georgia is ineffective and characterized by underreporting from healthc

The Impact of Chronic Temporomandibular Disorders on Fatigue and Daily Life: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) affect a notable portion of the population, with a prevalence of 5% to 12%. These conditions often lead individuals to adopt a soft-food diet to manage pain, but such dietary adjustments can inadvertently cause nutritional deficiencies. This issue may be compounded by medications used to manage TMD symptoms, which can contribute to fatigue and reduced daily functioning. In addition, TMD encompasses not only pain but also functional disorders, such as joint locking, which can further affect the individual's quality of life. AIM: This stu

Language as a pillar of cultural safety: evaluating hospital-based healthcare workers' knowledge of First Nations languages and interpreter services in East Arnhem Land, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Communication is a key determinant of health, yet in Australia’s Northern Territory (NT), First Nations language speakers usually receive medical care in English. The NT is a region of exceptional language diversity and vitality, with approximately 50 distinct First Nations languages spoken. At Gove District Hospital in East Arnhem Land, NT, 91% of First Nations peoples primarily speak an ancestral language, chiefly Yolŋu Matha, with a smaller proportion speaking Anindilyakwa, Burarra and others. Many would benefit from access to an interpreter during healthcare encounters. This st

Secrets and lies and donor conceptions: what donor-conceived individuals feel about their disclosure/discovery experience.

STUDY QUESTION: What are the satisfaction levels, as defined by emotional comfort or contentment, of adult individuals conceived via donor-assisted reproduction concerning the method, timing, and circumstances surrounding the disclosure/discovery of their conception? SUMMARY ANSWER: Inadvertent discovery and older age at the time of disclosure of donor-conceived status are associated with lower rates of satisfaction among donor-conceived individuals. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The proliferation of commercial DNA testing has resulted in many donor-conceived people learning inadvertently of their

Strategies to promote treatment compliance: a grounded theory study with relatives of people with a serious mental health condition.

BACKGROUND: Treatment pressures encompass communicative strategies that influence mental healthcare service users' decision-making to increase their compliance with recommended treatment. Persuasion, interpersonal leverage, inducements, and threats have been described as examples of treatment pressures. Research indicates that treatment pressures are exerted not only by mental healthcare professionals but also by relatives. While relatives play a crucial role in their family member's pathway to care, research on the use of treatment pressures by relatives is still scarce. Likewise, little is k

Medical or Common Knowledge? Knowledge of Medical Professionals on Obesity Diagnosis Criteria and Treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Proper diagnosis of obesity, its severity, and complications and their effective treatment requires an interdisciplinary healthcare approach. Nevertheless, obesity remains under-identified and undertreated. Academic knowledge concerning obesity pathology, diagnosis, and treatment is advancing. It is not clear whether this translates into clinical practice. The goal of the study was to assess the knowledge of healthcare professionals (HCPs) on obesity and particularly on the criteria for diagnosis as well as for conservative and surgical treatment. METHODS: This cross-sectional s

EANM procedure guideline for the treatment of liver cancer and liver metastases with intra-arterial radioactive compounds.

Primary liver tumours (i.e. hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC)) are among the most frequent cancers worldwide. However, only 10-20% of patients are amenable to curative treatment, such as resection or transplant. Liver metastases are most frequently caused by colorectal cancer, which accounts for the second most cancer-related deaths in Europe. In both primary and secondary tumours, radioembolization has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment option. The vast potential of personalized dosimetry has also been shown, resulting in markedly increased r
