The use of a non-invasive extendable prosthesis at the time of revision arthroplasty.

AIMS: The use of a noninvasive growing endoprosthesis in the management of primary bone tumours in children is well established. However, the efficacy of such a prosthesis in those requiring a revision procedure has yet to be established. The aim of this series was to present our results using extendable prostheses for the revision of previous endoprostheses. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients who had a noninvasive growing endoprosthesis inserted at the time of a revision procedure were identified from our database. A total of 21 patients (seven female patients, 14 male) with a mean age of 20

Surgical Treatment of Posttraumatic Ophthalmoplegia Through the Reconstruction of the Lateral Orbital Wall.

Orbital fractures are injuries frequently related to traumas of the midface. These fractures can be associated with ocular lesions, ranging from small abrasions on the cornea to serious complications such as hyphema and ocular globe rupture. Diplopia and ophthalmoplegia are common findings in orbital fractures. They can be caused by mechanical factors as bone fragments or muscle imprisonment. The aim of this study was to report a case of a 40-year patient, male showing diplopia and ophthalmoplegia due to the orbital fracture. The patient was treated by general anesthesia. It was performed a su

[Implantation of an Artificial Iris in 11 Patients].

Background. Iris defects are mostly acquired after injury, or may be iatrogenic after surgical excision of iris tumours or the result of collateral trauma after anterior segment surgery. They cause severe visual disability, e.g. glare, loss of contrast sensitivity, and loss of best corrected visual acuity. The foldable Koch iris prosthesis has a customised iris design and may be used to reconstruct the anterior segment in patients with partial or complete aniridia. History and Signs. We present the surgical management and clinical course of 6 patients with traumatic iris defects, together with

Cost-effectiveness analysis of sacral neuromodulation for faecal incontinence in The Netherlands.

AIM: Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) plays a major part in the algorithm of management of faecal incontinence, but there are limited data on its cost-effectiveness. This study aimed to analyse this and the quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) associated with two different treatment algorithms. The first (SNM-) included use of an artificial sphincter [dynamic graciloplasty (DGP) (50%) and artificial bowel sphincter (ABS) (50%)]. The second (SNM+) included SNM (80% of cases) and artificial sphincter (DGP 10%; ABS 10%) The incidence of sphincteroplasty was assumed to be equal in both algorithms. MET

Orthoimplants: an alternative treatment for SAHS?

UNLABELLED: Numerous sleep studies have been published recently regarding the use of intraoral devices (ODs) for the treatment of sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS). The effectiveness of these devices varies, however, according to the series studied (patient characteristics, parameters assessed, type of device, etc.). Two factors should always be assessed: the presence of an appropriate dental support and a possible temporomandibular joint pathology which can, on occasions, contraindicate the use of these devices. OBJECTIVES: To use orthoimplants as orthodontic anchorages for intermaxillary
