Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can be generated in experimental shock states through several different mechanisms. We measured ROS production in metabolically active liver mitochondria from rats rendered septic by cecal ligation and puncture. The toxicity of purified fumonisin B1 (FB1) administered ip was examined in male Sprague-Dawley rats. FB1 was injected at 7.5 or 10 mg/kg body weight/day for 4 consecutive days. Schedule-induced polydipsia was induced when food-deprived rats were subjected to a fixed-time (60 s) feeding schedule for 150 min daily for 3 weeks (training period). Subsequent chronic administration of the serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine reduces schedule-induced polydipsia over 2-4 weeks. Eighty-two-day-old male Wistar rats were selected to study the pattern of craniofacial growth following resection of the zygomatic arches. Halofuginone was evaluated for its activity against experimentally induced infection due to Cryptosporidium parvum in rats rendered immunosuppressed with dexamethasone. We investigated the effects of muscimol, the GABAA receptor agonist, and baclofen, the GABAB receptor agonist, injected into the third cerebral ventricle on plasma epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE) levels in anesthetized rats.
