A nutrition-focused review of the interventions in US-living Latino communities with type II diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a chronic, debilitating disease that disproportionally affects the Hispanic/Latino community residing in the United States. Optimal nutrition therapy is fundamental to the proper management of T2D and must be culturally adapted to facilitate permanent behavior change in this population. This review selected and assessed the nutrition components of interventions aimed to improve T2D outcomes in US-based Latinos/Hispanics, published from 2002 to 2023. An overview of the participant characteristics, nutrition intervention, and dietary assessment and outcomes is included.

Recipients of Representative Payeeship with Mental Illness: Financial Leverage, Conflict, and Satisfaction.

This study aimed to examine self-report of financial leverage, conflict, and satisfaction pertaining to representative payeeship for persons with mental illness, which research has not examined in the past decade. Sixty representative payee recipients with mental illness residing across the U.S. completed an online survey, with most (n = 50) receiving representative payeeship by family members/friends. Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney tests and Spearman correlations were computed. One-third of participants reported experiencing financial leverage and conflict "sometimes" or more often and were dissatisfi

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN URTICARIA AND INFECTIONS (REVIEW).

Urticaria is a common disease with 20% of prevalence and marked effects on quality of life. The burden of chronic urticaria for patients, their family and friends, the healthcare system and society is substantial. Triggering of urticaria by infections has been discussed for many years but the exact role and pathogenesis of mast cell activation by infectious processes is unclear. The remission of annoying spontaneous chronic urticaria has been reported after successful treatment of persistent infections. Chronic viral infections including hepatitis B and C have been reported to be associated wi

Understanding IPV Perpetration Among Young Jamaican Men: The Role of Socialization and Attitudinal Factors.

This study examined the association among a number of demographic, socialization, and attitudinal factors, and intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration in a sample of young Jamaican men. We conducted bivariate and logistic regression analyses using data from the 2008 Reproductive Health Survey (RHS) administered by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) for the National Family Planning Board. The RHS is a nationally representative sample of Jamaican women of childbearing age and men aged 15-24 years. Findings indicated that being in a co-residential union, residing in an urban area,

"Pigmented Extramammary Paget Disease"-A Potential Mimicker of Malignant Melanoma and a Pitfall in Diagnosis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare intraepithelial carcinoma and an uncommon variant of Paget disease affecting areas of the apocrine-rich skin of the perineum, vulva, and less commonly, axilla. Women in their sixth to eighth decades are commonly affected. It is exceedingly rare for EMPD to present on the face, chest, abdomen, or other nonapocrine sites and even more unusual for EMPD to present as a pigmented lesion. The relationship between Paget cells in pigmented extramammary Paget disease (PEMPD) and reactive proliferation and colonization by melanocytes has been poorly explored.

Pulmonary actinomycosis in a free-living black-tufted marmoset (Callithrix penicillata).

Actinomycosis is a very rare infection in wild animals with a few reports in captive non-human primates. Herein we report a case of pulmonary actinomycosis in a free-living black-tufted marmoset in the urban area of the Federal District, Brazil. The animal presented severe dyspnea and died in the garden of a residence. At necropsy, the left-pulmonary lobes showed multiple nodules filled with purulent content. A myriad of beaded, branching, filamentous Gram-positive and modified Ziehl-Neelsen-negative bacilli arranged in aggregates or star-like colonies, surrounded by macrophages, neutrophils,

Estimate of the prevalence of subjects with gambling-related problems requiring treatment: a study in Northern Italy.

This study analyzes the data related to subjects who for the first time turned to a hospital or to a Public Treatment Service Dedicated to Drug Addicts or to a Community Mental Health Center for problems related to pathological gambling in the metropolitan area of Bologna (Northern Italy) in the period 2000/2015. The aims were to describe characteristics and problems of pathological gamblers (PGs), and to estimate the prevalence of PGs using the capture-recapture method. Four hundred and ninety-five residents were identified, with an estimate of 1570 PGs and a prevalence of 1.78 per 1000. We h

Induction of the nuclear receptor PPAR-γ by the cytokine GM-CSF is critical for the differentiation of fetal monocytes into alveolar macrophages.

Tissue-resident macrophages constitute heterogeneous populations with unique functions and distinct gene-expression signatures. While it has been established that they originate mostly from embryonic progenitor cells, the signals that induce a characteristic tissue-specific differentiation program remain unknown. We found that the nuclear receptor PPAR-γ determined the perinatal differentiation and identity of alveolar macrophages (AMs). In contrast, PPAR-γ was dispensable for the development of macrophages located in the peritoneum, liver, brain, heart, kidneys, intestine and fat. Transcripto

Bilateral necrotizing sialometaplasia of the hard palate in a patient with bulimia: a case report and review of the literature.

Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) is a rare and benign lesion that mostly affects the posterior hard palate. Its importance resides in its clinical and microscopic characteristics, which can closely mimic malignant neoplasias, in particular oral squamous cell carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Accurate histopathologic evaluation of an incisional biopsy is considered as the diagnostic gold standard. NS lesions heal spontaneously within weeks, and no further treatment is necessary. We report a case of a bilateral palatal NS in a 22-yearold woman with bulimia, where an incisional biopsy confi

The public health foundation of health services for American Indians & Alaska Natives.

The integration of public health practices with federal health care for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) largely derives from three major factors: the sovereign nature of AI/AN tribes, the sociocultural characteristics exhibited by the tribes, and that AI/ANs are distinct populations residing in defined geographic areas. The earliest services consisted of smallpox vaccination to a few AI/AN groups, a purely public health endeavor. Later, emphasis on public health was codified in the Snyder Act of 1921, which provided for, among other things, conservation of the health of AI/AN pers

Infantile-onset ascending hereditary spastic paraplegia with bulbar involvement due to the novel ALS2 mutation c.2761C>T.

Recessive mutations in the alsin gene cause three clinically distinct motor neuron diseases: juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS2), juvenile primary lateral sclerosis (JPLS) and infantile-onset ascending hereditary spastic paraplegia (IAHSP). A total of 23 different ALS2 mutations have been described for the three disorders so far. Most of these mutations result in a frameshift leading to a premature truncation of the alsin protein. We report the novel ALS2 truncating mutation c.2761C>T; p.R921X detected by homozygosity mapping and sequencing in two infants affected by IAHSP with bulba

The synovium in rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease targeting multiple joints. The synovium is the primary site of the inflammatory process, which if untreated leads to irreversible damage to the adjacent cartilage and bone. It is now well established that autoantibodies that are characteristic of RA, including rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-citrulluninated protein antibodies (ACPA), are present before clinical disease onset. Studies in both humans and animal models are beginning to provide new insights into how this asymptomatic autoimmunity evolves into an inflammatory process that is

Diagnostic protocol in cases of congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors.

Patients with congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors may seek treatment from an orthodontist for several reasons; unpleasant smile, dental arch disharmony, and midline deviations are among the most frequent complaints. Orthodontists and prosthodontists have raised important questions about the esthetics, occlusion, periodontal health, and psychological conditions noted in these patients. The decision to open lateral incisor spaces for prosthetics or close spaces by mesial movement of the canines requires a careful diagnosis and comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment planning. Social costs of untreated opioid dependence.

Using cost-of-illness methodology applied to a comprehensive survey of 114 daily opiate users not currently in or seeking treatment for their addiction, we estimated the 1996 social costs of untreated opioid dependence in Toronto (Ontario, Canada). The survey collected data on social and demographic characteristics, drug use history, physical and mental health status, the use of health care and substance treatment services, drug use modality and sex-related risks of infectious diseases, sources of income, as well as criminality and involvement with the law enforcement system. The annual social

Pharmacological basis for hepatic drug metabolism in sheep.

Age-related changes in hepatic drug metabolizing activities of Lacaune ewes were determined in foetal, neonatal, growing, pregnant and adult animals. The ontogenic evolution of cytochrome P450 was compared to those of microsomal monooxygenases and some microsomal and cytosolic transferases. The involvement of two purified izoenzymes P4502B and P4503A was determined in the N-demethylation of various substrates and the hydroxylations of progesterone. An experimental fascioliasis, provoked by the oral administration of 150 metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica to sheep, was proposed as a pathologica

Oral contraceptive use among African American adolescents: individual and community influences.

Side effects of oral contraceptives are a noteworthy problem, particularly among low-income young women who reside in inner-city communities. The problem may be compounded by inadequate family planning services, particularly when such services are provided by general medical practices with high volumes of clients. This study examined the prevalence and correlates of pill-related side effects, with particular attention to the role of clinic characteristics. Participants were 177 pregnant and parenting African American adolescents and young women (average age = 18.34). The experience of a pill-r

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in Auckland: a long term follow-up study with particular reference to uveitis.

Although features of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) have been well described in British, American, and to a lesser extent Australian communities we can find no previous study of the clinical characteristics of this disease in a New Zealand population or indeed in any population containing Polynesians. In a follow-up study of 55 Auckland residents with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, current information was obtained for 78% of the study group with a mean interval from disease onset to follow up of 9.3 years. The outcome for the group as a whole was excellent although patients with a polyart

Psychiatric aspects of railway fatalities.

National statistics for railway fatalities in England and Wales show a reduction of train crashes and a fluctuating level of deaths, of which an increasing proportion is from suicide. A closer examination of a two-year sample from the South of England revealed a large proportion of probable suicides and a small proportion of pure accidents. The remainder appeared to have medical, mainly psychiatric, contributions to their death, of which alcohol was an important factor in single young men. Rail suicides appear to be younger, the men less often married, the women more often married, and both se

Size and stability of a naturally occurring virus inhibitor.

We recently described a virus inhibitor (contact-blocking virus inhibitor) which was produced spontaneously by untransformed human and murine cells in tissue culture (S. Baron and L. McKerlie , Infect. Immun . 32:449-453, 1981). This contact-blocking virus inhibitor was characterized by broad antiviral activity, high potency, and reversible inhibition of viral attachment. Unlike interferon, the antiviral activity of the contact-blocking virus inhibitor is not species specific. An inhibitor with similar properties can also be demonstrated in many body fluids and surface secretions. We report he
