Operations were performed on 131 patients for haemorrhagic peptic ulcer at Wenckebach Hospital, between 1977 and 1986. Roughly two thirds of all patients had never had ulcer before. Persistent haemorrhage was recorded from about 20 per cent of these cases by emergency gastroscopy. Immediate surgical action had to be taken on 23.7 per cent. Interval interventions were possible for 28.2 per cent, while almost 50 per cent had to be laparotomised for early recurrent bleeding. We report a retrospective study of 209 patients presenting with alopecia areata (AA) at our skin department during the period 1969-1987, with special reference to possible associations, aetiological factors and the relevance of additional investigations. The patients were divided into two groups: (I) those in whom AA developed during childhood; (II) those in whom AA developed in adult life (greater than or equal to 16 years). The aim of this study was to establish whether there is a difference between juvenile and maturity-onset AA and to consider the value of additional investigations in AA.

The incidence of thyroid cancer was evaluated in 35,074 patients examined for suspected thyroid disorders between 1951 and 1969 with an average of 1.92 megabecquerel [(MBq) 52 microCi] of 131I. The radiation dose to the thyroid gland was, on the average, approximately 0.5 Gy. The mean age at the time of examination was 44 years; 5% were under age 20. The cancer incidence was studied in 18,030 patients (33% males, 67% females) with skin hemangioma who were admitted to Radiumhemmet, Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, 1920-1959. The value of palpation findings and mammography in 596 patients with primary breast cancer was investigated. The most frequent symptom (86.1%) was the lump. The primary tentative diagnosis came from the patient in 63.4% of the cases, from the physician in 28.9% of the cases, and only after mammography in 7.7% of the cases. Retrospective analysis of axial CT scans from 600 consecutive pediatric patients revealed 37 patients (6%) with abnormal low density pericerebellar spaces. Fourteen of these 37 patients (38%) were diagnosed as cerebellar atrophy, whereas 23 of the 37 patients (62%) were diagnosed as mass-like pericerebellar fluid collections. This article describes a technique for stabilizing coxofemoral luxations in dogs that uses placement of nonabsorbable sutures from two screws in the dorsal acetabular rim to a screw in the trochanteric fossa of the femur to create a prosthetic capsule. Twenty-one hips with luxations that were either recurrent or greater than 7 days duration were treated. Owners of 17 dogs were contacted from 4 to 40 months after surgery. On the basis of 468 anatomical specimens, we intended to look for histological signs of an HPV (human papilloma virus) infestation. This study has enabled to calculate the true incidence of this pathology, to correlate the histo-clinical aspects as well as the association severe lesions-condylomatous lesions. Our conclusions confirm the close connection between viral lesions and malignant pathology of the cervix.

The results of a multicentric retrospective study of 110 cases of small cell bronchial cancer are reported. In 57 of these patients the histological diagnosis was unknown before surgery. Obliteration of the terminal hepatic venules with perivenular fibrosis (phlebosclerosis) is a well recognised feature in alcoholic liver disease. Veno-occlusive lesions with intimal obliteration of hepatic veins and a lymphocytic phlebitis of hepatic veins may also be present.
