Between 1 April 1987 and 30 September 1988 prospective active surveillance of human ehrlichiosis was conducted among febrile patients hospitalized in southeast Georgia. If disease of the immune system, bacterial infection, pneumonia, or surgical illness was documented by the end of the first full day of hospitalization, the patient was excluded. Of 75 patients enrolled in the study, 8 (10.7%) had a fourfold rise or fall in titer to Ehrlichia canis (case-patients). The rate was 5.3 cases/100,000 population. The authors present two cases of neurocysticercosis diagnosed both by serology and medical imaging (computed tomographic scan and magnetic resonance imaging). The first patient had a mixed form with localization of the parasites in the different anatomic parts. He developed suddenly a severe encephalitis which growth has been quickly fatal in spite of a prompt praziquantel and corticosteroids treatment. The second patient had a parenchymal form, and the same treatment was very effective.

The risk of inpatient-to-nurse transmission of cytomegalovirus (CMV) was assessed in a five-year prospective seroepidemiologic study. We enrolled 263 renal transplant/hemodialysis nurses, 204 neonatal intensive care nurses, 225 student nurses, and 251 blood donor controls. Prevalence of CMV antibody in these 943 subjects was 33.7% and did not differ significantly among the four study groups. Sixteen subjects experienced primary CMV infections. A female adult without previous medical or surgical pathology nor specific treatment developed meningoencephalitis localised to the brainstem associated with bilateral subclinical optic neuritis. Rotavirus infections are a common cause of childhood gastroenteritis but are rarely severe enough to justify radiographs. However, there appears to be a small subset of children in whom a rotavirus-induced diarrheal illness accompanied by bloody stools is sufficiently severe and protracted to warrant barium studies. Leptospiral infection was diagnosed in 41.6 per cent of 245 randomly selected aborted bovine fetuses and 68.9 per cent of 103 aborted fetuses from farms with abortion problems. The Marseilles area continues to be an endemic region of mediterranean tick bite fever. During the period 1975-1978 40 cases were observed in two medical departments in Marseilles.
