Alternating gender incongruity: a new neuropsychiatric syndrome providing insight into the dynamic plasticity of brain-sex.

Between the two extreme ends of human sexuality - male and female - lie a poorly understood and poorly studied spectrum of ambiguously defined sexual identities that are very much a part of the human condition but defy rigid classification. "Bigender" is a recently formed sub-category of transgenderism, describing individuals who experience a blending or alternation of gender states. While recognized nominally by the APA, no scientific work to our knowledge has addressed this fascinating condition, or proposed any physiological basis for it. In addition, the alternation aspect has not been pro

Reproductive health and quality of life of young Burmese refugees in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Of the 140,000 Burmese* refugees living in camps in Thailand, 30% are youths aged 15-24. Health services in these camps do not specifically target young people and their problems and needs are poorly understood. This study aimed to assess their reproductive health issues and quality of life, and identifies appropriate service needs. METHODS: We used a stratified two-stage random sample questionnaire survey of 397 young people 15-24 years from 5,183 households, and 19 semi-structured qualitative interviews to assess and explore health and quality of life issues. RESULTS: The young

Embryonic exposure to the fungicide vinclozolin causes virilization of females and alteration of progesterone receptor expression in vivo: an experimental study in mice.

BACKGROUND: Vinclozolin is a fungicide that has been reported to have anti-androgenic effects in rats. We have found that in utero exposure to natural or synthetic progesterones can induce hypospadias in mice, and that the synthetic progesterone medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) feminizes male and virilizes female genital tubercles. In the current work, we selected a relatively low dose of vinclozolin to examine its in utero effects on the development of the genital tubercle, both at the morphological and molecular levels. METHODS: We gave pregnant dams vinclozolin by oral gavage from gestati

Dystonia musculorum mutation and myosin heavy chain expression in skeletal and cardiac muscles.

This study evaluated the influence of dystonia musculorum (dt) mutation, characterized by spinocerebellar fibers degeneration, on cardiac and skeletal muscles: one respiratory (diaphragm, Dia), three masticatory (anterior temporalis, AT; masseter superficialis, MS; and anterior digastric, AD), one hindlimb (soleus, S), tongue (T), and one cardiac (ventricle, V). Body and muscle weight, muscle protein content, and myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms relative expression were then compared in dt mutant mice and in normal mice, according to sex. Male body and muscle weight was always greater than th

Human variant sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) with an additional carbohydrate chain has a reduced clearance rate in rabbit.

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is the specific plasma transport protein for sex steroid hormones in humans. Considerable variation in SHBG plasma concentration exists between individuals, irrespective of gender, body weight, or thyroid status. In the present work, the influence of carbohydrate chains on the half-life of human SHBG (hSHBG) was investigated using a rabbit model. A variant hSHBG, with a point mutation in exon 8 (GAC --> AAC) encoding an amino acid substitution (Asp327Asn), which introduces an additional consensus site for N-glycosylation, has recently been identified. This m

Spike-and-wave epilepsy in rats: sex differences and inheritance of physiological traits.

Spontaneously occurring spike-and-wave patterns were examined in seven to eight-month-old rats of the inbred Fischer 344 and Brown Norway strains and their F1 and F2 hybrids. Neocortical activity and movement were monitored for 12 night h. Spike-and-wave episodes were identified by a three-layer back-propagation neural network. The incidence, average duration and total duration of spike-and-wave episodes were significantly higher in F1 males and F2 hybrids than in the parental strains. Male rats of the Brown Norway strain had significantly more and longer episodes than females, whereas no sex

Association of structural brain changes with cognitive deficits and fatigue in patients with post-COVID-19 condition.

Cognitive impairment and fatigue are frequent symptoms in patients with post-COVID-19 condition. However, cognitive issues are often only self-reported and not compared to well-matched control groups. Furthermore, structural brain changes, underlying cognitive impairment and fatigue in post-COVID-19 condition are still not fully understood. To assess cognitive deficits, fatigue, neuropsychiatric symptoms and quality of life in patients with post-COVID-19 condition, determine changes in brain volumes, cortical thickness and regional shape complexity and assess correlations of imaging measures w

Associations of Health Care System Deficiency-Related Patient Deterioration With Burnout, Depressive Symptoms, and Sleep Problems Among Emergency Medical Service Providers: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: On February 6, 2024, the Korean government announced an increase in medical school enrollment quotas, triggering a nationwide strike by medical residents that precipitated a severe health care crisis. Prehospital emergency medical service (EMS) providers were forced to transport patients to distant hospitals, resulting in some patients experiencing symptom deterioration or death due to delayed critical care. Recent studies have examined moral injury-a mental health response to events that undermine moral values-among EMS providers, with exposure to potentially morally injurious eve

Quantifying the magnitude of the general contextual effect in a multilevel study of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Ontario, Canada: application of the median rate ratio in population health research.

BACKGROUND: Regional variations in SARS-CoV-2 infection were observed in Canada and other countries. Studies have used multilevel analyses to examine how a context, such as a neighbourhood, can affect the SARS-CoV-2 infection rates of the people within it. However, few multilevel studies have quantified the magnitude of the general contextual effect (GCE) in SARS-CoV-2 infection rates and assessed how it may be associated with individual- and area-level characteristics. To address this gap, we will illustrate the application of the median rate ratio (MRR) in a multilevel Poisson analysis for q

Minoxidil-loaded hyaluronic acid dissolving microneedles to alleviate hair loss in an alopecia animal model.

Alopecia is defined as hair loss in a part of the head due to various causes, such as drugs, stress and autoimmune disorders. Various therapeutic agents have been suggested depending on the cause of the condition and patient sex, and age. Minoxidil (MXD) is commonly used topically to treat alopecia, but its low absorption rate limits widespread use. To overcome the low absorption, we suggest microneedles (MNs) as controlled drug delivery systems that release MXD. We used hyaluronic acid (HA) to construct MN, as it is biocompatible and safe. We examined the effect of HA on the hair dermal papil

Neurocognitive decision-making processes of casual methamphetamine users.

Neuroadaptations caused by chronic methamphetamine (MA) use are likely major contributors to high relapse rate following treatment. Thus, focusing intervention efforts at pre-empting addiction in vulnerable populations, thereby preventing MA-use-induced neurological changes that make recovery so challenging, may prove more effective than targeting chronic users. One approach is studying casual/recreational users, not diagnosed with substance use disorder. This group may be at high risk for addiction due to their experience with MA. On the other hand, they may be resilient against addiction sin
