The paraffin-embedded tissue (PET) blot method was used to investigate sections of the central nervous system and lymphatic tissues from 24 cases of classical scrapie and 25 cases of atypical/Nor98 scrapie in sheep and four healthy control sheep. The PET blot detected deposits of PrP(Sc) in the brain tissue of all 49 sheep with scrapie but no PrP(Sc) labelling could be detected in the control sheep. By contrast, not all the atypical/Nor98 scrapie cases were detectable by immunohistochemistry. The high sensitivity of the PET blot method made it possible to observe that in some atypical/Nor98 ca…

A survey of trypanosomosis in goats, sheep and pigs was carried out in Buikwe County, Mukono District of South Eastern Uganda between April and August 1994. Infection rates of 8.8% in 204 goats, 26.7% in 60 sheep and 32.4% in 68 pigs of all ages and both sexes were recorded. Trypanosoma brucei parasites were found in goats and pigs, T. congolense in sheep and pigs and T. vivax in goats and sheep. Infection rates were similar in both sexes of animal species and it was observed that T. vivax caused high levels of parasitaemia while T. brucei infections were associated with very low levels of par…

Following the discovery that a flock of sheep in England was infected with the virus of maedi-virus, several seropositive sheep were brought to the Central Veterinary Laboratory and kept isolated and under observation for up to three years before being further examined at necropsy. Meanwhile, sheep in the infected flock which died or were culled were examined after death for evidence of the actual disease. At necropsy pulmonary disease was a common (although not always the sole) finding, the lesions being mostly chronic pasteurellosis and pulmonary adenomatosis. One of the 45 carcases examined…

Sheep seasonal reproduction is regulated by photoperiod via melatonin. Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 2 (IDO2), an enzyme involved in tryptophan metabolism through the kynurenine pathway and belonging to the IDO family, may contribute to melatonin homeostasis, but its role in reproductive seasonality remains unclear. In this study, genome-wide selection analyses combining Z(FST) and XP-EHH between seasonal and non-seasonal sheep identified a selection signature encompassing the IDO2 region and revealed g.-809T>C as a functional candidate variant within this region. Experiments employing electroph…

Abnormalities of the reproductive tract of female sheep were studied by examining 9970 reproductive tracts from cull ewes and 23,536 tracts from nulliparous sheep (prime lambs) over a period of 12 months in abattoirs in south-west England. Overall, 3.37 per cent of the tracts were pregnant (8.11 per cent of cull ewes, and 1.36 per cent of nulliparous sheep), with a peak incidence between September and December. A total of 655 ewes (6.57 per cent) and 459 nulliparous sheep (1.95 per cent) had acquired abnormalities of the reproductive tract. Within these totals, abnormalities of the ovaries acc…

The occurrence of the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), related to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), raises the important question of the sources of human contamination. The possibility that sheep may have been fed with BSE-contaminated foodstuff raises the serious concern that BSE may now be present in sheep without being distinguishable from scrapie. Sensitive models are urgently needed given the dramatic consequences of such a possible contamination on animal and human health. We inoculated transgenic mice expressing the ovine PrP gene with a brain homogenate from sheep experi…

Q fever is caused by a rickettsial microorganism (Coxiella burnetii) harboured in sheep. The highest concentration of organisms are found in birth products. It is a very contagious organism which humans can contract by inhaling aerosolized organisms. Most commonly it leads to an acute 'flu-like illness. Rarely, chronic disease with endocarditis is fatal. Infected patients should be treated with tetracyclines or chloramphenicol. A number of outbreaks have been reported in hospital and research settings. Because of the fear of patients and staff contracting Q fever, Hospital Research Review Boar…

A survey was conducted on the prevalence of Fasciola gigantica and Dicrocoelium hospes eggs in gall bladders of cattle and small ruminants (sheep and goats) slaughtered between November 1987 and December 1988 in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. Prevalence rates of 42.7% and 5.7% were recorded for F. gigantica and D. hospes eggs, respectively, in 246 cattle and 718 sheep and goats examined. Out of the 246 cattle examined, 52 (21.1%), 45 (18.3%) and 8 (3.3%) excreted eggs of F. gigantica, D. hospes and of the two species respectively. For sheep and goats, the prevalence of egg excretion was 28 (…

We examined the role of the carotid chemoreceptors in the ventilatory response to changes in venous CO2 load in 12 awake sheep using a venovenous extracorporeal perfusion circuit and two carbon dioxide membrane lungs (CDML). Three of the sheep had undergone surgical denervation of the carotid bodies (CBD). In the nine intact sheep, as CO2 was removed from or added to the peripheral venous blood through the CDML under normoxic conditions, there was a linear relationship between the rate of pulmonary CO2 excretion (VCO2) and the resulting rate of ventilation over a VCO2 range of 0--800% of contr…

Campylobacter infection is an important cause of genital failure in ruminants in developed countries. Although historically Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus has been the main cause of abortion in sheep, C. jejuni is also increasingly associated with sheep abortions. However, limited information is known on Campylobacter-associated abortions in China. This study initially investigated the distribution of Campylobacter from the genital tracts of humans, monkeys, sheep and cows in China from 2017 to 2018. Ten out of 2126 (0.47%) samples from the genital tracts were Campylobacter positive, of …

The mammalian Y chromosome plays a critical role in spermatogenesis. However, the exact functions of each gene on the Y chromosome have not been completely elucidated, due, in part, to difficulties in gene targeting analysis of the Y chromosome. The zinc finger protein, Y-linked (ZFY) gene was first proposed to be a sex determination factor, although its function in spermatogenesis has recently been elucidated. Nevertheless, ZFY gene targeting analysis has not been performed to date. In the present study, RNA interference (RNAi) was used to generate ZFY-interrupted Hu sheep by injecting short …

In Mexico, Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii are major causes of reproductive problems in sheep. Understanding the environmental factors that influence the spread of these parasites is crucial for developing effective control strategies. The objective of this study was to identify the environmental factors associated with N. caninum and T. gondii infections in sheep in western Mexico. Blood samples were collected from 184 sheep and determine seroprevalence using the ELISA test. Based on the seroprevalence data and information about the climatic regions and geographic characteristics, logi…

Distributed worldwide, Taenia ovis infection is responsible for the condemnation of sheep carcasses in many countries. This review highlights the programme used in New Zealand to successfully control T. ovis in sheep, and discusses how similar approaches may be modified for use in Canada, given what is currently known about the epidemiology of T. ovis. The lifecycle of the parasite is well known, involving dogs as the definitive host and sheep or goats as the intermediate host. An effective vaccine does exist, although it is not presently commercially available. In New Zealand an industry-base…

Brucella melitensis is a Gram-negative bacterium whose primary hosts are goats and sheep. Like the other BrucelIa spp., with the exception of Brucella ovis, it is not particularly host specific as it is pathogenic for a variety of other mammal species including humans. In humans the disease caused by it is rated as one of the most important zoonoses. Three outbreaks have been recorded in goats and sheep in South Africa; the first outbreak occurred in sheep in 1965 in the Mpumalanga and Northern Provinces (then both part of the Transvaal Province), the second occurred in sheep in 1989 near Pret…
