BACKGROUND: Bilateral facet interlocking of the cervical spine is a relatively uncommon type of cervical spinal injury. It is frequently associated with devastating neurological symptoms and signs. Early reduction of the locked facets is thought to be critical in preventing progressive secondary spinal cord injury. Whereas skull tong traction remains our primary option for closed reduction of bilateral locked facets of the cervical spine, it is not always successful, even with heavy traction weights. Other more aggressive measures may occasionally be required. The authors report their experien…

The purpose of the present investigation is to describe and discuss the craniofacial abnormalities in young and adult patients with cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD). Skull radiographs of 52 CCD patients were examined. Thirty-six patients were adult, 16 were between 7 and 16 years old. Facial photographs were available in 30 cases, and in one adult case with cranial CT scans, 3-D reconstructions were carried out. High quality photographs of six CCD skulls were also described. The paranasal sinuses were absent or diminished in all children and most adult patients. An inverted pear-shape of the calv…

The authors describe three cases of familial acrocephalosyndactyly (ACS) in two boys (9 and 3 years of age) and in their 7.5-year old sister. In addition, irregularities in skull and limbs were found in the 46-year old father as well as in two other children, i.e., two girls, 14 and 4 years of age. The mother (46 years-old) and the remaining four 4 boys (12-, 9-, and 7-years-old), as well as the youngest child, a son, 1-year-old) did not show any deviations. The diagnosis of the Saethre-Chotzen syndrome in six members of one family was based on the finding of a typical skull deformation (oxybr…

Several tetrapod lineages have independently evolved an aquatic lifestyle, driving structural and functional modifications. Changes in eye size and position are key trends in this transition. While most frogs and toads have aquatic larvae, the majority of adults are terrestrial. In contrast, Telmatobius frogs exhibit a unique spectrum from semiaquatic to strictly aquatic lifestyles, linked to the colonization of the Andean highlands. This study examines variation in eye size, position, and cranial proportions, in two species: the semi-aquatic Telmatobius oxycephalus and the strictly aquatic T.

The chapter begins with a review of some of the background thinking during Hippocrates time. The brain was considered to be the location of the soul which was the essence of subjective experience. However, this was not a brain function as such but rather a location where the pneuma reacted with the soul. Hippocrates' monograph on cranial trauma begins with a description of the bones and sutures. He then systematized the classification of cranial injury. He sensibly advised accurate diagnosis into one of the types of injury he described and supported extension of any skin opening to facilitate

Prokinesis, a mode of avian cranial kinesis involving motion between the neurocranium and upper beak, has long been investigated in biomechanical analyses of avian feeding and drinking. However, the modern avian beak is also used for non-feeding functions. Here, we investigate the dual function of prokinesis in the feeding and locomotor systems of the rosy-faced lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis). Lovebirds and other parrots utilize their beak both during feeding and as a third limb during vertical climbing. Thus, we experimentally measured both force-generating potential and movement of the ros

Metopic craniosynostosis is the second most frequent type of craniosynostosis. When the phenotypic presentation has been deemed severe the treatment is surgical in nature and is performed in infancy with fronto-orbital advancement and cranial vault remodeling. At the time of this writing, there is no consensus regarding an objective evaluation system for severity, diagnostic criteria, or indications for surgery. This study aims to review the anthropometric cranial measurements and the relative diagnostic criteria/classification of severity/surgical indications proposed so far for this skull ma…

Craniofacial malformations have been recorded since time immemorial. While observational studies have assisted in the recognition of syndromes, little light has been shed on the causal mechanisms which interfere with craniofacial development. Animal studies in which malformations occur spontaneously or have been induced by teratogenic agents have permitted step-by-step investigation of such common deformities as cleft lip and palate. The role of the ectomesenchymal cells of the neural crest and the possible phenomenon of disorganized spontaneous cell death are described in relation to lip clef

Craniofacial surgery can radically correct the most severe dysmorphias of fronto nasal encephaloceles, trigonocephaly, plagiocephaly, telorbitism, Crouzon, Apert, Chotzen... Its procedures can make to normal their general morphology, the projection of the mid face and maxilla, centering and inter relationship of the orbital cavities. It can also correct or improve many dysfunctions such as : naso-pharyngeal atresia, dental malocclusion, exorbitism, exotropia and, consequently, strabismus. According to syndromes and degree of severity, craniofacial surgery is undertaken between 2 to 10 years of
