We review evidence challenging the hypothesis that memories are processed or consolidated in sleep. We argue that the brain is in an unconscious state in sleep, akin to general anesthesia (GA), and hence is incapable of meaningful cognitive processing-the sole purview of waking consciousness. At minimum, the encoding of memories in sleep would require that waking events are faithfully transferred to and reproduced in sleep. Remarkably, however, this has never been demonstrated, as waking experiences are never truly replicated in sleep but rather appear in very altered or distorted forms. Gener…

Experimental studies highlight profound effects of sleep disruptions on pain, showing that sleep deprivation (SD) leads to hyperalgesic pain changes. On the other hand, given that sleep helps normalizing bodily functions, a crucial role of restorative sleep in the overnight restoration of the pain system seems likely. Thus, a systematic review of experimental studies on effects of recovery sleep (RS; subsequently to SD) on pain was performed with the aim to check whether RS resets hyperalgesic pain changes occurring due to SD. Empirical animal and human studies including SD-paradigms, RS and p…

INTRODUCTION: University students tend to suffer from problems of sleep regularity, quantity and quality, which can affect their academic performance. These problems are related to changes typical of the phase of the life cycle in which they find themselves due to maturational, psychosocial development (associated with the processes of individuation and socialisation) and academic factors. The study of the relationship between sleep and academic performance in university students is an area of research of growing interest, which has started to be studied over the last two decades.
AIM: To con…

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Oronasal thermistor and nasal cannula are recommended for the scoring of respiratory events (RE) but these sensors are poorly tolerated in children. The aim of the study was to evaluate tracheal sounds (TS) and suprasternal pressure (SSP) for the scoring of RE during sleep in children.
METHODS: We compared the detection and characterization of RE by AASM-recommended sensors ("AASM" scoring), with the detection and characterization of RE by the combination of TS and SSP with respiratory inductance plethysmography-sum (TS-RIP scoring), and TS and SSP only (TS scoring).
RESULT…

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Thermistors, nasal cannulas, and respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP) are the recommended reference sensors of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) for the detection and characterization of apneas and hypopneas; however, these sensors are not well tolerated by patients and have poor scorability. We evaluated the performance of an alternative method using a combination of tracheal sounds (TSs) and RIP signals.
METHODS: Consecutive recordings of 70 adult patients from the Pays de la Loire Sleep Cohort were manually scored in random order using the AASM standar…

The past two decades has seen a substantial rise in the use of opioids for chronic pain, along with opioid-related mortality and adverse effects. A contributor to opioid-associated mortality is the high prevalence of moderate/severe sleep-disordered breathing, including central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea, in patients with chronic pain. Although evidence-based treatments are available for sleep-disordered breathing, patients are not frequently assessed for sleep-disordered breathing in pain clinics. To aid healthcare providers in this area of clinical uncertainty, we present eviden…

INTRODUCTION: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is indicated in cases of refractory epilepsy. Its side effects are frequently minor, however, breathing disturbances during sleep have been previously reported.
CASE REPORTS: Our three cases are representative of sleep-disordered breathing that occurred as a consequence of VNS activity in patients with refractory epilepsy. Sleep apnoea was observed in two patients and stridor in one patient.
CONCLUSIONS: Given the high prevalence of sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome in patients with refractory epilepsy, implantation of VNS should be ideally preceded …

Poor sleep in the postpartum is often treated as an unavoidable consequence of childbirth. This study aims to compare objective and subjective measures of sleep, explore the relationship between sleep and postpartum weight retention (PPWR), and investigate factors that may contribute to sleep quality in the postpartum period. In this cross-sectional cohort, PPWR, sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)), and objective sleep and physical activity (accelerometry) were assessed in 109 women 0-52 weeks postpartum. Anthropometric and demographic data were collected. Gestational weight …

BACKGROUND: Sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) has been associated with different ocular manifestations including glaucoma, floppy eye syndrome, punctate keratitis, keratoconus, and optic neuropathy. Angioid streaks are mainly associated with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) although they can appear in other systemic conditions affecting the elastic fibers.
METHODS: This is a prospective, cross-sectional study. A complete ophthalmic examination was performed in 92 patients undergoing overnight polysomnography for suspicion of OSAS. Diagnosis and classification of OSAS were made based on apnea-hypopnea…

BACKGROUND: The paediatric population has a high incidence of sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD). A notable risk factor is the presence of craniofacial abnormalities. The objective of the study was therefore to survey the prevalence of SRBD in patients presenting for interceptive treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective study with a sample of 249 healthy patients. The "Paediatric Sleep Questionnaire" and "Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children" were completed by the children's parents and the results were evaluated. All patients had their medical records reviewed and underwent orthodo…

Polysomnography (PSG) is considered the gold standard in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAS) diagnostics, but its availability is still limited. Thus, it seems useful to assess patients pre-diagnostic risk for OSAS to prioritize the use of this examination. The purpose of this study was to assess positive (PPV) and negative (NPV) predictive values of the STOP BANG questionnaire (SBQ) in patients with presumptive diagnosis of OSAS. From a database of 1,171 (880 men) patients of a university based sleep center, 1,123 (847 men) met eligibility criteria and their SBQ scores were subje…

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a major health concern worldwide and adversely affects multiple organs and systems. OSA is associated with obesity in >60% of cases and is independently linked with the development of numerous comorbidities including hypertension, arrhythmia, stroke, coronary heart disease and metabolic dysfunction. The complex interaction between these conditions has a significant impact on patient care and mortality. The pathophysiology of cardiometabolic complications in OSA is still incompletely understood; however, the particular form of intermittent hypoxia (IH) observed…
