Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus: The Effects Are More Than Skin Deep.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the psychosocial effects of a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) diagnosis on the households of children with MRSA skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI). STUDY DESIGN: We constructed and administered an interview to the primary caregiver within the home of a child with a history of MRSA SSTI. RESULTS: Seventy-six households were enrolled. Survey responses were analyzed and grouped into 4 themes: health behavior changes, disclosure, social interactions, and knowledge/awareness. The most common theme was disclosure; 91% of participants reported sharing the

Navigating opioid overdose risks in a vulnerable social network.

This study uses mixed methods social network analysis (MMSNA) to examine the concentration of opioid overdoses among highly vulnerable people embedded in an administrative proxy network in an overdose hot spot. Descriptive network analyses are used to understand the contours of individual and relational overdose risk in an administrative proxy network of people who use and sell opioids. Interviews with market participants are then used to understand the strategies used to mitigate individual risk of death. People who use and sell both develop interactional rules and cultural scripts as prophyl

Role of glial cells in neurotoxicological effects of alcohol.

Alcohol (ethanol), presumably consumed as wine as far back as 7000 BC, is most likely the first addictive substance known to man. In modern days, its abuse leading to neurotoxicity and a myriad of organ damages, is of considerable social and medical concern. In the United States alone, approximately 180,000 people die yearly because of alcohol-related accidents and diseases. Given its ubiquitous nature, alcohol may interact with many cellular components. In this chapter, we specifically concentrate on its neurotoxic mechanisms involving glial cells and their role in neuroinflammation. Moreover

"Women's work": Gender and the physician workforce.

Historically, the physician professional identity and the organizational structure of Western medicine have been defined by masculine norms such as authority and assertiveness. The past five decades have seen a rapid shift in the demographics of attendees as medical schools, with equal numbers of women and men matriculants for nearly twenty years. Gender as a social, cultural, and structural variable continues to influence the physician workforce. The entry of women into medicine, has had far reaching effects on the expectations of patients, the interactions of physicians with other members of

The Imitation Game in Children With Tourette Syndrome: A Lack of Impulse Control to Mirror Environmental Stimuli.

The learning process in humans requires continuous contacts with environmental stimuli, especially during neurodevelopmental growth. These functions are assisted by the coding potential of mirror neurons to serve social interactions. This ability to learn imitating the observed behavior is no longer necessary during adulthood, and control mechanisms prevent automatic mirroring. However, children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome could encounter coding errors at the level of the mirror neurons system as these cortical regions are themselves the ones affected in the syndrome. Combined with imp

Ferret Behavior Medicine.

Domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) are common zoologic companion animals and display specific body language and vocalizations. Social interactions, play behavior, and resting periods are important keystone in domestic ferret behavior. Specific housing and environmental enrichment are recommended to preserve the expression of normal behavior and physiology in ferrets. Presence of abnormal behaviors, including aggression, urination and defecation outside the litter box, stereotypies, and absence of play behavior, should be carefully monitored by veterinarians and ferret owners to assess fe

More than words: the emotional maltreatment of children.

Emotional maltreatment may be the most complex, prevalent, and damaging form of child maltreatment and can occur simultaneously with other forms of abuse. Children in the first few years of life seem to be at the greatest risk of suffering the most negative outcomes. Medical professionals can help identify and protect victims of emotional maltreatment by carefully observing caregiver-child interactions, paying attention to a family's social history, making referrals to community or counseling programs when necessary, and reporting any suspicions of maltreatment to Child Protective Services. A

Translational animal models of autism and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder whose diagnosis is based on three behavioral criteria: unusual reciprocal social interactions, deficits in communication, and stereotyped repetitive behaviors with restricted interests. A large number of de novo single gene mutations and chromosomal deletions are associated with autism spectrum disorders. Based on the strong genetic evidence, mice with targeted mutations in homologous genes have been generated as translational research tools. Mouse models of autism have revealed behavioral and biological outcomes of mutations in risk genes. The field is

Finger recognition and gesture imitation in Gerstmann's syndrome.

We report the association between finger agnosia and gesture imitation deficits in a right-handed, right-hemisphere damaged patient with Gerstmann's syndrome (GS), a neuropsychological syndrome characterized by finger and toe agnosia, left-right disorientation and dyscalculia. No language deficits were found. The patient showed a gestural imitation deficit that specifically involved finger movements and postures. The association between finger recognition and imitation deficits suggests that both static and dynamic aspects of finger representations are impaired in GS. We suggest that GS is a d

Occupational (and non-occupational) risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders are an important cause of disability and absence from work in industrialized countries. A number of studies reported the importance of occupational, personal and psycho-social factors in the aetiology of these work-related disorders. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: To stress the complex relationships existing between risk factors, reporting findings from reviews and original studies regarding two of the most significant musculoskeletal disorders: carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and low back pain (LBP). CONCLUSIONS: More detailed epidemiological studies are needed t

Caring while aging: a cross-sectional study in Lebanon on caregiver burden, mental health, and the moderating effects of social and financial resources.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of older adults provide care for spouses or relatives, yet the mental health impact of caregiving, particularly while managing their own health conditions, remains poorly understood. In Lebanon, where formal long-term care services remain limited and caregiving is largely family-based, there is a need to better understand how caregiver burden affects the mental health of older adult caregivers. Therefore, this study examined the association between caregiver burden and mental health among older adult caregivers in Lebanon and the moderating role of social and finan

Chronic social defeat stress accelerates lung cancer progression and induces hippocampal metabolic dysregulation in a duration-optimized comorbid model.

Chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) is a commonly used mouse model of depression, yet lung cancer - CSDS combined model remains underexplored. Research on the duration of CSDS to induce persistent depressive phenotypes is also relatively limited and calls for further study. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between stress duration and depressive severity, and to clarify the neurobiological links between tumor burden and depression-like behaviors. A combined lung cancer - CSDS mouse model was established by integrating stress exposure and Lewis lung carcinoma implantation. Depressiv

Biopsychosocial risk pathways to school violence in youth: a scoping review of stress reactivity, mental health outcomes, and prevention.

School violence represents a major public health and educational concern with significant consequences for adolescents' psychological well-being, academic functioning, and social development. Increasing evidence indicates that violent behaviors in school environments arise from the complex interaction between individual vulnerabilities and broader social determinants. This scoping review aims to describe and discuss the available evidence on the risk factors, mental health outcomes, and prevention strategies associated with school violence. A comprehensive literature search was conducted acros

Dravet syndrome: From neurodevelopmental to neurodegenerative disease?

OBJECTIVE: Dravet syndrome (DS) is a severe developmental and epileptic encephalopathy caused by SCN1A haploinsufficiency in the majority of cases. Caregivers of adults with DS often complain about the loss of previously acquired skills. We set out to explore these perceptions and determine whether abnormalities reported were detectable in validated tests. We also investigated possible correlations between symptoms, age, and exposure to sodium channel blockers (SCBs). METHODS: This cross-sectional, multicenter study used the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, 3rd edition (raw scores) for beha
