"Being the best person that they can be and the best mum": a qualitative study of community volunteer doula support for disadvantaged mothers before and after birth in England.

BACKGROUND: Disadvantaged pregnant women and new mothers are at increased risk of psychosocial stress, anxiety and depression. As well as affecting birth outcomes and child development, poor maternal emotional wellbeing can inhibit the development of parenting self-efficacy and successful adjustment to the maternal role. Social support is a protective factor against antenatal and postnatal depression, anxiety and stress, and improves mothers' confidence in infant care. Community doula programmes have been developed to meet the social support and information needs of disadvantaged women. In the

Arterial spin labeling provides a reliable neurobiological marker of autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Research on neurobiological markers of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been elusive. However, radionuclide studies of cerebral blood flow (CBF) have shown decreased blood flow (hypoperfusion) in the temporal lobes of individuals with ASD across ages and intelligence. This observation fits with current neuroscientific models that implicate temporal regions in social perception and social cognition. Arterial spin labeled perfusion MRI allows noninvasive quantification of regional CBF as part of a multimodal MRI protocol. This method is almost entirely absent from ASD research to d

The provision of and need for social support among adult and pediatric patients with tuberculosis in Lima, Peru: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health problem in Peru, causing an estimated 35,000 new cases each year, 6.7% of whom are co-infected with HIV. Social support mechanisms are key in influencing health-seeking behavior, adherence, and overall patient wellbeing in clinical settings. We examine the types of social support received by TB patients and parents of pediatric patients in peri-urban Lima, Peru, to understand its role in patients' psychosocial wellbeing during treatment. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted between August 2004 and May 2005 among 4

Shifting power in global health research: a checklist for research funders.

Colonial legacies continue to shape who decides, leads, and benefits from global health research. Funders play a pivotal role in this landscape, determining which settings, problems, and approaches are prioritized in research. This paper introduces a checklist for research funders aimed at tackling some of the structural and political dimensions of inequity in global health research. Grounded in a framework that understands 'decolonising global health' across three intersecting dimensions (colonialism within global health, colonisation of global health, and colonialism through global health),

Holding collaboration together: a community response using a violence threat and suicide prevention protocol.

Coordinated, multi-sectoral community responses to youth mental health represent a promising yet undertheorized approach to addressing the service fragmentation that characterizes collaborative work across education, health, policing, and community services. This article presents qualitative findings from a larger sequential mixed-methods study of Strathcona County's Violence, Trauma, and Suicide Prevention (VTSP) Protocol. The VTSP Protocol is a coordinated community framework designed to address youth mental health, community safety, and wellbeing in Alberta, Canada. The larger study combine

Collectivism and Suicide Risk: Reinterpreting Interpersonal Theory Constructs in Southern Belize.

BACKGROUND: Over 70% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet cultural mechanisms of suicide risk remain underexplored. Collectivism is often assumed protective, but emerging evidence from vertically collectivist settings suggests a more complex relationship. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted with 29 community stakeholders across health, education, religious, and social service sectors in Toledo District, southern Belize. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis with deductive alignment to the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (IPTS) and

Network adaptability governs resilience and susceptibility to social defeat.

Stress resilience-the ability to maintain mental health after adversity-manifests in humans and rodents as efficient threat-safety discrimination and fear extinction. Although behavioral differences between resilient and susceptible individuals are well documented, the brain-wide structural signatures that distinguish resilience, susceptibility, and impaired threat learning remain poorly defined. Using a translational mouse model of chronic social defeat stress in male C57BL/6 J mice (n = 55), combined with preregistered multimodal magnetic resonance imaging with graph-theoretical analyses, we

Bereavement in paediatric oncology: programme evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: The death of a child from cancer is a devastating event with long-term psychological and social consequences for parents. While bereavement support is increasingly recognised as a standard of care in paediatric oncology, structured programmes remain limited and heterogeneous. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of bereaved parents of paediatric oncology patients treated at our institution. A structured questionnaire, developed by a multidisciplinary team, explored experiences with bereavement initiatives and preferences for supportive activities. RESULTS: Of 156 questi

Entrenched Opportunity: Medicaid, Health Systems, and Solutions to Homelessness.

CONTEXT: As inequality grows, politically powerful health care institutions-namely Medicaid and health systems-are increasingly assuming social policy roles, particularly related to solutions to homelessness. Medicaid and health systems regularly interact with persons experiencing homelessness who are high users of emergency health services and who experience frequent loss of or inability to access Medicaid services because of homelessness. This research examines Medicaid and health system responses to homelessness, why they may work to address homelessness, and the mechanisms by which this oc

Detection of antibodies against the African parasite Trypanosoma brucei using synthetic glycosylphosphatidylinositol oligosaccharide fragments.

Trypanosoma brucei (T. brucei) parasites cause two major infectious diseases in Africa: African trypanosomiasis in humans (HAT) and Nagana in animals. Despite the enormous economic and social impact, vaccines and reliable diagnostic measures are still lacking for these diseases. The main obstacle to developing accurate diagnostic methods and an active vaccine is the parasite’s ability for antigenic variation, impairment of B cell maturation, and loss of B cell memory which collectively prevent the development of a long-lasting, effective immune response. The antigenic variation is sustained by

Excessive audio-visual stimulation leads to impaired social behaviour with an effect on amygdala: Early life excessive exposure to digital devices in male rats.

Today, the effect of extreme early-life exposure to digital devices is suggested as a risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders. However, the multitude of factors that influence brain development with subsequent behavioural abnormalities have not been fully elucidated. Herein, we simulated extreme early-life exposure to digital devices in rats by audio and visual stimulation and investigated its effects on autism-related behaviours and brain structural alteration. Male rat pups were exposed to excessive audio-visual stimulation (EAVS) from PND (post-natal day) 12 to PND 35, with and without

Office-Based Structural Autologous Fat Injection Laryngoplasty for Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis.

Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) is a common cause of incomplete glottic closure, leading to significant somatic and social disabilities. Office-based autologous fat injection laryngoplasty (AFIL) has been proposed as an effective treatment for glottic insufficiency but has not been well-studied for UVFP. We enrolled 23 patients who underwent office-based structural AFIL due to unilateral vocal paralysis at our institution between February 2021 and January 2022. In the procedure, autologous fat was harvested and injected into the vocal fold under the guidance of flexible digital endoscop

Altered Brain Network Segregation in Fragile X Syndrome Revealed by Structural Connectomics.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS), the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder, is associated with significant behavioral, social, and neurocognitive deficits. Understanding structural brain network topology in FXS provides an important link between neurobiological and behavioral/cognitive symptoms of this disorder. We investigated the connectome via whole-brain structural networks created from group-level morphological correlations. Participants included 100 individuals: 50 with FXS and 50 with typical development, age 11-23 years. Results indicated alterati

Barriers in Access to the Treatment for People with Gambling Disorders. Are They Different from Those Experienced by People with Alcohol and/or Drug Dependence?

A prevalence of gambling disorders is diversified depending on the region of the world. Almost three quarters of pathological gamblers had never sought a professional treatment as well as an assistance in self-help groups. Reasons why they do not initiate a treatment are complex. The aim of the article is to compare barriers to the treatment for people with gambling disorders found in presented study and barriers to alcohol and drug treatment identified in the available literature. The semi structured interviews were applied and conducted with people with gambling disorders, social workers, th

Altered cortical structures and tract integrity of the mirror neuron system in association with symptoms of schizophrenia.

The mirror neuron system (MNS) may be implicated in schizophrenia. This study investigated MNS structures, including the pars opercularis (Pop), the supramarginal gyrus (SMg), the third branch of the superior longitudinal fasciculus, and callosal fibers interconnecting bilateral Pop (CC-Pop) and SMg (CC-SMg), and clarified their relationships with positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Participants comprised 32 schizophrenia patients and 32 matched controls who received T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI, T1WI) and diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI). The cortical me

Clinical characteristics and distinctiveness of DSM-5 eating disorder diagnoses: findings from a large naturalistic clinical database.

BACKGROUND: DSM-IV eating disorder (ED) diagnoses have been criticized for lack of clinical utility, diagnostic instability, and over-inclusiveness of the residual category "ED not otherwise specified" (EDNOS). Revisions made in DSM-5 attempt to generate a more scientifically valid and clinically relevant system of ED classification. The aim with the present study was to examine clinical characteristics and distinctiveness of the new DSM-5 ED diagnoses, especially concerning purging disorder (PD). METHODS: Using a large naturalistic Swedish ED database, 2233 adult women were diagnosed using D

Personality traits in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy: evidence of cortical abnormalities from a surface morphometry study.

Cluster B personality disorders (PD), characterized as emotional instability, immaturity, lack of discipline, and rapid mood changes, have been observed among patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) and have been associated with a worse seizure outcome. Proper understanding of the neurobiology of PD associated with JME could contribute to understanding the basis for earlier and more effective interventions. In the present study, volumetric and geometric features of cortical structure were assessed through an automated cortical surface reconstruction method aiming to verify possible str

Maternal responses to adolescent positive affect are associated with adolescents' reward neuroanatomy.

The development of reward-based learning and decision-making, and the neural circuitry underlying these processes, appears to be influenced negatively by adverse child-rearing environments characterized by abuse and other forms of maltreatment. No research to-date has investigated whether normative variations in the child-rearing environment have effects on adolescent brain structure. We examined whether normative variations in maternal responses to adolescents' positive affective behavior were associated with morphometric measures of the adolescents' affective neural circuitry, namely the amy
