Psychological health maintenance on Space Station Freedom.

The scheduling of crew rotations for up to 180 days on Space Station Freedom presents a special challenge for behavioral scientists who are tasked with providing psychological support for the crews, their families, and mission flight controllers. Preflight psychological support planning may minimize the negative impact of psychological and social issues on mission success, as well as assist NASA management in making real-time mission planning decisions in the event of a significant social event (for example, the death of a family member). During flight, the combined psychological, emotional, a

Global Sociodemographic Disparities in the Severity of Alcohol-Associated Hepatitis.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH) carries high short-term mortality, yet the contribution of sociodemographic factors to disease severity and outcomes is poorly defined. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study across 30 centers in 14 countries (January 2015-September 2024). We included adults who met National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) criteria for AH. Outcomes included infections, access to liver transplantation (LT), and survival. Mortality was analyzed with Fine-Gray competing-risk models. RESULTS: Among 726 partici

Oral Health Literacy and Preventive Behaviors Among Caregivers of Dependent Older Adults in Sisaket Province, Thailand: A Structural Equation Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: Dependent older adults experience a high burden of preventable oral conditions, particularly gingivitis, while caregivers' preventive practices remain insufficiently explained by conventional single-factor models. This study aimed to develop and validate a theory-informed structural equation model (SEM) to explain how oral health literacy and psychosocial determinants shape preventive behaviors for gingivitis among caregivers of dependent older adults in Sisaket Province, Thailand. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 420 caregivers selected using multis

"An environment of fear no matter where I go": A mixed-methods examination of transgender and gender diverse experiences while facing antitransgender legislation.

Even under the best of circumstances, transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals face well-documented social and health disparities. In recent years, more than 2,000 legislative and policy-based initiatives have aimed to limit the rights of TGD individuals in accessing gender-affirming health care, sports, and public facilities. These legislative efforts represent a structural stressor that compounds the interpersonal stressors that TGD individuals already face, potentially leading to elevated psychological distress. However, TGD individuals exist within a constellation of experiences th

Barriers and facilitators to self-management in chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis: Insights from a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health challenge, with many patients dependent on hemodialysis (HD) for survival. Although HD prolongs life, it presents significant physical, psychological, and social difficulties, complicating self-management which is a vital aspect of CKD care. Self-management involves addressing symptoms, adhering to treatments, and managing psychosocial impacts. This study investigates barriers and facilitators of self-management in HD patients to inform care improvements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative content analysis captured the experiences

Reconsidering remission in recurrent late-life depression: clinical presentation and phenotypic predictors of relapse following successful antidepressant treatment.

BACKGROUND: Late-life depression (LLD) is characterized by repeated recurrent depressive episodes even with maintenance treatment. It is unclear what clinical and cognitive phenotypic characteristics present during remission predict future recurrence. METHODS: Participants (135 with remitted LLD and 69 comparison subjects across three institutions) completed baseline phenotyping, including psychiatric, medical, and social history, psychiatric symptom and personality trait assessment, and neuropsychological testing. Participants were clinically assessed every two months for two years while rec

Sexual minority women's perceptions of sober curiosity: Lessons learned from a US pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual minority women (SMW) are more likely than heterosexual women to meet criteria for hazardous drinking (HD). Sober curiosity, which centres on non-pathologising approaches such as mindfulness and support for questioning norms that encourage heavy/hazardous alcohol use, may be a particularly salient non-stigmatising option for SMW to reduce alcohol consumption. However, SMW's perceptions of sober curiosity as a strategy for changing drinking behaviours have not been explored. METHODS: We conducted in-depth individual interviews with a purposive sample of 17 SMW from the Unit

Decoding behaviour change techniques in opioid deprescribing strategies following major surgery: a systematic review of interventions to reduce postoperative opioid use.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: METHODS: A structured search strategy encompassing databases including MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL Plus, PsycINFO and Cochrane Library was implemented from inception to October 2023. Included studies focused on interventions targeting opioid reduction in adults following major surgeries. The risk of bias was evaluated using Cochrane risk-of-bias tool V.2 (RoB 2) and non-randomised studies of interventions (ROBINS-I) tools, and Cohen's d effect sizes were calculated. BCTs were identified using a validated taxonomy. RESULTS: 22 studies, comprising 7 clinical trials and 15

Who is in Your Waiting Room? Social Determinants of Health and Adverse Childhood Experiences in Pediatric Surgery Clinics.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDoH) influence overall health, although little is known about the SDoH for pediatric patients requiring surgical services. This study aims to describe SDoH for pediatric surgical patients attending out-patient, community, and outreach clinics, as well as demonstrate the feasibility of identifying and addressing SDoH and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) when appropriate. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using surveys evaluating SDoH that were distributed to families attending pediatric surgical clinics over a two-year period. The pilot survey use

Polygenic risk for schizophrenia predicting social trajectories in a general population sample.

BACKGROUND: We investigated (a) whether polygenic risk for schizophrenia predicts different trajectories of social development among those who have not developed psychoses and (b) whether possible associations are PRSSCZ-specific or evident also for any polygenic risk for mental disorders, e.g. for major depression. METHODS: Participants came from the population-based Young Finns Study (n = 2377). We calculated a polygenic risk score for schizophrenia (PRSSCZ) and for major depression (PRSDEP). Diagnoses of psychotic disorders were derived from the hospital care register. Social development f

Multiple traumas and resilience among street children in Haiti: Psychopathology of survival.

In Haiti, as in several developing countries, the phenomenon of street children has become a major public health issue. These children are often victims of traumas and adverse life events. This article aimed to investigate traumas experienced by street children and their coping and resilience strategies used to deal with adversities in a logic of survival, relying on a mixed method approach. A group of 176 street children, aged 7-18 (n = 21 girls), recruited in Port-au-Prince, completed measures assessing PTSD, social support and resilience. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to documen
