Suppositories of theophylline-sodium salicylate were prepared with 10 different vehicles and also with tensids and softeners. With the dynamic diffusion method the drug dissolution and the in vitro diffusion were measured. It was established that proper choice of the vehicle is very important. The highest relative in vitro availability was measured in the case of glyceride base with low hydroxyl value. The diffusion of the active agent can be described by an exponential function.

12 children with known bronchial hyperreactivity and asthma had isocapnic cold air hyperventilation challenges of their bronchial airways. In a double-blind cross-over study they inhaled either placebo or nedocromil sodium (2 puffs à 2 mg) from a MDI before challenge. 2 subjects were found to be non-responders during the two days of the study. The remainder all reacted on the placebo days, while 5 subjects were completely protected on the nedocromil-days and 5 subjects were partially protected. Nedocromil is a potent agent for the suppression of bronchial hyperresponsiveness.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there are familial and genetic aspects of sodium-lithium countertransport activity in red cells in diabetic nephropathy.
DESIGN: Case-control study.
SETTING: Teaching hospital diabetic clinic.
SUBJECTS: 40 Patients with insulin dependent diabetes, both of whose parents were alive: 20 with persistent proteinuria and 20 with normal albumin excretion matched for age, duration of diabetes, and body mass index. All 80 parents.

The effect of administration of hyperosmotic NaCl (2 ml, 7.8% NaCl, iv) on carrageenan-induced pleurisy was determined in adrenalectomized and intact rats. The volume of the pleural exudate was significantly reduced 4 h after induction by treatment with hyperosmotic NaCl for both adrenalectomized (0.08 +/- 0.16 ml) and intact (0.03 +/- 0.08 ml) animals compared to their untreated controls (0.56 +/- 0.44 ml and 0.26 +/- 0.15 ml, respectively). Iodinated radiocontrast medication has been successful in the treatment of thyrotoxicosis when used for short periods up to 21 days, but experience with long-term use is lacking.
