Protocol for a conversation-based analysis study: PREVENT-ED investigates dialogue features that may help predict dementia onset in later life.

INTRODUCTION: Decreasing the incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a global public health priority. Early detection of AD is an important requisite for the implementation of prevention strategies towards this goal. While it is plausible that patients at the early stages of AD may exhibit subtle behavioural signs of neurodegeneration, neuropsychological testing seems unable to detect these signs in preclinical AD. Recent studies indicate that spontaneous speech data, which can be collected frequently and naturally, provide good predictors for AD detection in cohorts with a clinical diagnosis

Clinical decision-making for complex feeding decisions: A national survey of current approaches and perspectives.

OBJECTIVES: Decision-making around dysphagia management is becoming increasingly challenging due to the complexity of contexts associated with an ageing population. The current study explores current decision-making practices used by speech language therapists (SLTs) surrounding contexts related to palliative care, dementia, neuro-degenerative diseases, guardianship/family decisions, and other issues relevant to ongoing care of individuals with dysphagia. METHODS: An exploratory prospective electronic survey of SLTs was conducted. A total of 202 respondents were eligible for inclusion. RESUL

Health-related quality of life, service utilization and costs of low language: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Low language (LL) is a common childhood condition affecting 7-17% of children. It is associated with life-long adverse outcomes and can affect various aspects of a child's life. However, the literature on its impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), service use and costs are limited. To date, there has been no systematic review of the overall economic burden of LL. A systematic review regarding the economic burden of LL is important for clinical, educational, policy decision-making and theoretical aspects. We adopted the term 'low language' to refer to children whose langu

Voice therapy for the elderly with progression of intensity, frequency, and phonation time: case reports.

This study aims to verify the immediate and medium-term effects of an intensive voice therapy, with progression of vocal intensity and frequency and phonation time, on the voice and larynx of two elderly. A 79-year-old male and an 82-year-old female with vocal complaints and presbylarynx characteristics underwent 12 sessions of intensive voice therapy, with progression of voice intensity and frequency and phonation time, for three weeks. To analyze the therapeutic effects, the following assessments were performed pre-, post-immediately, and one month after voice therapy: auditory-perceptual an

Production of two Nasal Sounds by Speakers with Cleft Palate.

Many speakers with cleft palate develop atypical consonant productions, especially for pressure consonants such as plosives, fricatives, and affricates. The present study investigated the nature of nasal sound errors. The participants were eight female and three male speakers with cleft palate between the ages of 6 to 20. Speakers were audio-recorded, and midsagittal tongue movement was captured with ultrasound. The speakers repeated vowel-consonant-vowel with the vowels /α/, /i/, and /u/ and the alveolar and velar nasal consonants /n/ and /η/. The productions were reviewed by three listeners.

Overgeneral autobiographical memory bias in clinical and non-clinical voice hearers.

BACKGROUND: Hearing voices can be a distressing and disabling experience for some, whilst it is a valued experience for others, so-called 'healthy voice-hearers'. Cognitive models of psychosis highlight the role of memory, appraisal and cognitive biases in determining emotional and behavioural responses to voices. A memory bias potentially associated with distressing voices is the overgeneral memory bias (OGM), namely the tendency to recall a summary of events rather than specific occasions. It may limit access to autobiographical information that could be helpful in re-appraising distressing

Working with children with autism: an interprofessional simulation-based tutorial for speech pathology and occupational therapy students.

There is an increasing need to include interprofessional experiences in undergraduate health education. Simulation is one methodology revered as being able to facilitate interprofessional learning opportunities in a safe, structured environment. This project aimed to develop, trial and evaluate an interprofessional simulation role-play tutorial utilising DVD resources. In total, 70 speech pathology students and 76 occupational therapy students participated in a role-play involving DVD footage and documentation to facilitate assessment planning and analysis of assessment data for a child with a

Voice alterations in patients with Morquio A syndrome.

Morquio A syndrome, or mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS IV A), is an inherited lysosomal storage disorder which belongs to the group of mucopolysaccharidoses (MPSs). It is caused by N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfatase (GALNS) activity deficiency, which results in impaired degradation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including keratan sulfate (KS) and chondroitin-6-sulfate (CS). These compounds infiltrate and disrupt the architecture of the extracellular matrix, compromising the integrity of the connective tissue. Patients with Morquio A have also been noted for exhibiting abnormalities of the larynx and

Social Anxiety, Affect, Cortisol Response and Performance on a Speech Task.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is characterized by increased emotional reactivity to social stimuli, but results of studies focusing on affective reactions of socially anxious subjects in the situation of social exposition are inconclusive, especially in the case of endocrinological measures of affect. SAMPLING AND METHODS: This study was designed to examine individual differences in endocrinological and affective reactions to social exposure as well as in performance on a speech task in a group of students (n = 44) comprising subjects with either high or low levels of social anxiety. Measures of

The effects of listener training on discriminative control by elements of compound stimuli in children with disabilities.

The purpose of the current study was to assess whether the establishment of listener relations with compound stimuli as samples and comparisons would lead to the emergence of: (1) speaker behavior in the form of tacts of the compound stimuli; (2) listener and tact responses for untaught compounds; and (3) listener and tact responses for the isolated properties of compounds. Participants were four boys diagnosed with autism and one diagnosed with intellectual disability. We taught participants to select among three compound comparisons consisting of combinations of shapes and patterns in the pr

Gestural abilities of children with specific language impairment.

BACKGROUND: Specific language impairment (SLI) is diagnosed when language is significantly below chronological age expectations in the absence of other developmental disorders, sensory impairments or global developmental delays. It has been suggested that gesture may enhance communication in children with SLI by providing an alternative means to convey words or extend utterances. However, gesture is a complex task that requires the integration of social, cognitive and motor skills, skills that some children with SLI may find challenging. In addition, there is reason to believe that language an

Preliteracy Speech Sound Production Skill and Linguistic Characteristics of Grade 3 Spellings: A Study Using the Templin Archive.

PURPOSE: This archival investigation examined the relationship between preliteracy speech sound production skill (SSPS) and spelling in Grade 3 using a dataset in which children's receptive vocabulary was generally within normal limits, speech therapy was not provided until Grade 2, and phonological awareness instruction was discouraged at the time data were collected. METHOD: Participants (N = 250), selected from the Templin Archive (Templin, 2004), varied on prekindergarten SSPS. Participants' real word spellings in Grade 3 were evaluated using a metric of linguistic knowledge, the Computer

[Nonlinear acoustic analysis in the evaluation of occupational voice disorders].

BACKGROUND: Over recent years numerous papers have stressed that production of voice is subjected to the nonlinear processes, which cause aperiodic vibrations of vocal folds. These vibrations cannot always be characterized by means of conventional acoustic parameters, such as measurements of frequency and amplitude perturbations. Thus, special attention has recently been paid to nonlinear acoustic methods. The aim of this study was to assess the applicability of nonlinear cepstral analysis, including the evaluation of mel cepstral coefficients (MFCC), in diagnosing occupational voice disorders

A neuropsychological perspective on the link between language and praxis in modern humans.

Hypotheses about the emergence of human cognitive abilities postulate strong evolutionary links between language and praxis, including the possibility that language was originally gestural. The present review considers functional and neuroanatomical links between language and praxis in brain-damaged patients with aphasia and/or apraxia. The neural systems supporting these functions are predominantly located in the left hemisphere. There are many parallels between action and language for recognition, imitation and gestural communication suggesting that they rely partially on large, common netwo

Global and local evaluations of public speaking performance in social anxiety.

Differences in the relative use of global and local information (seeing the forest vs. the trees) may explain why people with social anxiety often do not benefit from corrective feedback, even though they pay close attention to details in social situations. In the current study, participants high (n=43) or low (n=47) in social anxiety symptoms gave a series of brief speeches, and then self-rated their speaking performance on items reflecting global and local performance indicators (self-assessment) and also received standardized performance feedback from an experimenter. Participants then comp
