STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
OBJECTIVE: To report contemporary rates of complications and subsequent surgery after spinal surgery in patients with skeletal dysplasia.
METHODS: A case series of 25 consecutive patients who underwent spinal surgery between 2007 and 2017 were identified from a single institution's skeletal dysplasia registry. Patient demographics, medical history, surgical indication, complications, and subsequent surgeries (revisions, extension to adjacent levels, or for pathology at a non-contiguous level) were collected. Charlson comorbidity indices were calculate

BACKGROUND: Pelvic deformity after resection of malignant pelvic tumors causes scoliosis. Although the central sacral vertical line (CSVL) is often used to evaluate the coronal alignment and determine the treatment strategy for scoliosis, it is not clear whether the CSVL is a suitable coronal reference axis in cases with pelvic deformity. This report proposes a new coronal reference axis for use in cases with pelvic deformity and discusses the pathologies of spinal deformity remaining after revision surgery.
OBSERVATIONS: A 14-year-old boy who had undergone internal hemipelvectomy and pelvic

This study aims to propose a new optimization framework for solving spine kinematics based on skin-mounted markers and estimate subject-specific mechanical properties of the intervertebral joints. The approach enforces dynamic consistency in the entire skeletal system over the entire time-trajectory while personalizing spinal stiffness. 3D reflective markers mounted on ten vertebrae during spine motions were measured in ten healthy volunteers. Biplanar X-rays were taken during neutral stance of the subjects wearing the markers. Calculated spine kinematics were compared to those calculated usin

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
OBJECTIVE: To elucidate an association between preoperative lumbar epidural corticosteroid injections (ESI) and infection after lumbar spine surgery.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: ESI may provide diagnostic and therapeutic benefit; however, concern exists regarding whether preoperative ESI may increase risk of postoperative infection.
METHODS: Patients who underwent lumbar decompression alone or fusion procedures for radiculopathy or stenosis between 2000 and 2017 with 90 days follow-up were identified by ICD/CPT codes. Each cohort was categorized as no preo

Spinal teratoma with associated neuroendocrine tumour (NET) is a rare entity. To date there have been only three such cases reported in the literature. Information available to clinicians regarding clinical presentation, behaviour of this tumour over time, management options and follow-up, are as a consequence very limited. We present a case of a 37-year-old woman who was found to have an incidental lumbar spine teratoma with NET after presenting with a one-week history of acute lower back pain and radiculopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbosacral spine demonstrated an acute d

PURPOSE: Dropped head syndrome (DHS) is presumably caused by focal myopathy in the cervical posterior muscles; however, distinguishable radiological features of the cervical spine in DHS remain unidentified. This study investigated the radiological features of the cervical spine in dropped head syndrome.
METHODS: The records of DHS patients and age- and sex-matched cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) patients were reviewed. Cervical spinal parameters (C2-7, C2-4, and C5-7 angles) were assessed on lateral cervical spine radiographs. Quantitative radiographic evaluation of cervical spine dege

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine whether timing of lumbar spinal fusion (LSF) before revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) would impact dislocation and rerevision rates.
METHODS: This retrospective analysis includes a total of 505 patients who underwent revision THA with concomitant diagnosis of degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis with spondylolisthesis. Patients were stratified into the following two cohorts: (1) 328 patients who underwent revision THA with previous LSF and (2) 177 patients who underwent revision THA, followed by LSF. Postoperative complications including d

BACKGROUND: Hyperextension thoracic spine fractures (HTSFs) typically involve the anterior ligamentous complex of the spine. These patients often present with paraplegia and warrant early surgical reduction/fixation even though few deficits resolve. Here, we present the unusual case of a 40-year-old male whose paraparetic deficit resolved following reduction/fixation of a T7-T8 HTSF.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 40-year-old male presented with a thoracic computed tomography (CT) documented T7- T8 HTSF following a motor vehicle accident. His neurological examination revealed severe paraparesis, but wit

Background: The use of bicycle helmets in preventing traumatic brain injuries (TBI) is frequently cited but data remain inconclusive. Additionally, the effects of helmets on cervical spine injuries (CSI) are debated. Methods: We performed a retrospective review of all adult patients with bicycle crashes presenting to one level 1 trauma center in Wisconsin from 2010 to 2016. Patients were divided into two groups: helmeted and un-helmeted.Results: In total 287 patients were included; 149 un-helmeted (51.9%) and 138 helmeted (48.9%). Helmeted riders had radiographic evidence of traumatic brain inj

BACKGROUND: As an irrigant, an antiseptic, and a hemostatic agent, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is widely used in surgical treatment, but it has been surrounded by persistent controversy. Fatal or near-fatal embolic events caused by H2O2 have been reported sporadically in spine surgery.
CASE DESCRIPTION: In this report, we present an 87-year-old man who underwent lumbar instrumentation removal and debridement consequent to surgical site infection in a prone position. H2O2 was used to irrigate the infected screw tracks and surrounding tissues during the procedures. Soon after irrigation, the patie

STUDY DESIGN: Radiographic comparative study with prospectively collected data.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the accuracy of subaxial cervical pedicle screw (CPS) placement with freehand technique compared to lateral mass screws (LMS). The freehand cervical pedicle screw insertion technique guided by intraoperative lateral C-arm imaging has been shown to be both safe and effective. However, no study has performed a 100% audit of this technique using pre- and postoperative computed tomography (CT) to determine its true accuracy, as well as its reduction capability of CPS and LMS instrumentation.

BACKGROUND: The practice of hip arthroscopy is increasing in popularity, which has highlighted the importance of identifying risk factors that predict hip arthroscopy outcomes. The literature suggests that lumbar spine disease is an independent risk factor for poorer outcomes following total hip arthroplasty; however, the effect of lumbar spine disease on hip arthroscopy outcomes has not been fully investigated. At present, there is a paucity of literature investigating the effect of coexisting hip and lumbar spine disease on outcomes after hip arthroscopy.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcomes o

PURPOSE: Other fields of medicine have demonstrated underreported surgical complication rates by institutional M&M compared to NSQIP. However, a study comparing surgical complication rates in the pediatric spine population, using an identical set of patients rather than nationally extrapolated, has not been performed.
METHODS: A single institution's ASC-NSQIP Pediatric spine fusion cases and its departmental team-reported M&M database for the same were reviewed for January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2018. Differences in surgical complication reporting between the two databases for the identical

Full-endoscopic spine surgery (FESS) is a suitable treatment for lumbar disc herniation (LDH) and foraminal stenosis. Here, we describe the usefulness of FESS for treating radiculopathy after osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). Between October 2018 and April 2019, three female patients (mean age, 81.7 years) with radiculopathy after OVCFs underwent FESS. Decompression of the corresponding nerve root was achieved using several FESS techniques, including foraminoplasty, discectomy, and removal of osteophyte or cement leakage. The mean operative time was 60.7 min. Preoperative a

With the health care environment becoming increasingly patient centric and cost-conscious, interest levels in spinal endoscopy are at an all-time high. Patient demand for the least invasive procedures combined with surgeon desire to maximally shorten the postoperative recovery period has further driven this surgical evolution. Mounting scientific evidence demonstrates the noninferiority and perhaps even superiority of endoscopic techniques to more conventional spinal surgery for the treatment of spinal stenosis and disc herniations. Although higher level evidence is much needed to support the
