Psychological consequences and differential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in patients with mental disorders.

OBJECTIVE: People with mental disorders might be differentially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on patients with various psychiatric disorders who were admitted to inpatient treatment. METHODS: Five-hundred thirty-eight inpatients with mental disorders participated in a survey about psychological consequences of the pandemic between March-December 2020. We examined the perceived burden by restrictions and worries, changes in health care utilization, and helpfulness of coping strategies. RESULTS: More than 50% reported

Factors associated with COVID-19 pandemic induced post-traumatic stress symptoms among adults living with and without HIV in Nigeria: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Nigeria is a country with high risk for traumatic incidences, now aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to identify differences in COVID-19 related post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among people living and not living with HIV; to assess whether PTSS were associated with COVID-19 pandemic-related anger, loneliness, social isolation, and social support; and to determine the association between PTSS and use of COVID-19 prevention strategies. METHODS: The data of the 3761 respondents for this analysis was extracted from a cross-sectional online survey that collecte

A prospective study of firefighters' PTSD and depression symptoms: The first 3 years of service.

Objective: Firefighters are an important sample of convenience to study traumatic exposure and symptom development. This study assessed trauma exposure inside and outside of fire service, diagnosed posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated disorders using clinical interviews and self-report measures, then tested the hypothesis that trauma exposure would predict distress in firefighters over the first 3 years in service. Method: In total, 322 professional firefighter recruits were assessed during academy training and through their first 3 years of service. Diagnostic assessments were

Remodeling the marrow fat niche: BMAT in cancer bone metastases and hematological malignancies.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood sexual abuse is the leading cause of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in women, and is a prominent cause of morbidity and loss of function for which limited treatments are available. Understanding the neurobiology of treatment response is important for developing new treatments. The purpose of this study was to assess neural correlates of personalized traumatic memories in women with childhood sexual abuse with and without PTSD, and to assess response to treatment. METHODS: Women with childhood sexual abuse with (N = 28) and without (N = 17) PTSD underwent brain imagi

Only susceptible rats exposed to a model of PTSD exhibit reactivity to trauma-related cues and other symptoms: an effect abolished by a single amphetamine injection.

The present study had two main goals. First, to investigate whether an animal model of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), single prolonged stress (SPS) leads to one of the main PTSD symptom: avoidance of trauma-related stimuli. Second, to investigate whether a single amphetamine injection delivered 30 days after SPS can reduce these symptoms. Olfactory and auditory cues were added to the SPS context and reactivity to these cues were tested more than one month later using an odor discrimination test, and freezing to the trauma-related tone. Other PTSD symptoms, such as anxiety (elevated plu

Impact of daily assessments on distress and PTSD symptoms in trauma-exposed women.

As more advanced methodologies are developed for symptom assessment in traumatic stress studies, it is important to examine how these methodologies can exacerbate distress or contribute to symptoms among study participants. Using a sample of 202 female college students, we examined the changes in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and general psychological symptomatology among groups of trauma-exposed and non-trauma-exposed women randomly assigned to complete 30 days of daily monitoring of traumatic symptoms and substance use behaviors using personal digital assistants (PDAs). Intrusive memories and depression following recent non-traumatic negative life events in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Research in adults suggests that intrusive memories are not just found in individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet there is little evidence concerning the phenomenology of intrusive memories in children and adolescents. The present study investigated the frequency of intrusive memories following a recent negative event in an adolescent school sample, and considered the application of cognitive theory to understanding the maintenance of intrusive memories of recent negative events, and their role in maintaining depression. METHODS: High school students (aged 11-1

Trauma freed of the concept of determinism: is it possible to have a dialogue between psychoanalysis and neuroscience around the question of singularity?

This article introduces a model of dialogue between psychoanalysis and neuroscience that is based on an account of the economic dimension of trauma. From the outset Freudian theory took into account the singularity of each subject's response to traumatic events, setting aside any linear paradigm in the causality of symptoms. In 1980, the introduction of the nosographic category of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) within the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) contributed to an increased social recognition for sufferers. Yet, it also resulted in a form of standardization in a clinical

Unconsciousness, amnesia and psychiatric symptoms following road traffic accident injury.

BACKGROUND: Although road traffic accident injury is the most common cause of traumatic brain injury, little is known of the prevalence of psychiatric complications or the significance of unconsciousness and amnesia. AIMS: To describe amnesia and unconsciousness following a road traffic accident and to determine whether they are associated with later psychological symptoms. METHOD: Information was obtained from medical and ambulance records for 1441 consecutive attenders at an emergency department aged 17-69 who had been involved in a road traffic accident. Gun and Other Weapon-Involved Intimate Partner Violence and Psychiatric Symptoms.

IMPORTANCE: Gun, knife, or other weapon involvement in intimate partner violence (IPV) may indicate heightened actual and perceived lethality and coercive control, but its mental health impacts on survivors are poorly understood after accounting for other IPV and prior mental health symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the adjusted association between gun and other weapon-involved IPV and symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD), panic disorder (PD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and adult separation anxiety disorder (ASAD), accounting for concurrent and past nonweapon physical IPV, ps

The Buffering Effect of Relationships on Combat Exposure, Military Performance, and Mental Health of U.S. Military Soldiers: A Vantage Point for CFTs.

This study examined the role of cumulative combat experiences with regard to military performance and conduct and mental health among a sample of young soldiers from the Army STARRS dataset (N = 5,283). Higher levels of cumulative combat experiences were directly related to poorer performance and conduct and a greater likelihood of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Military performance and conduct served as a linking mechanism between combat experiences and mental health. Using moderated mediation structural equation modeling, relationship disruptions were found t

Chlorogenic acid improves SPS-induced PTSD-like behaviors in rats by regulating the crosstalk between Nrf2 and NF-κB signaling pathway.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a long-term delayed mental disorder caused by sudden, threatening or catastrophic life events. Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a polyphenolic acid rich in Eucommia ulmoides and other plants with potential neuroprotective effects, effectively enhances learning and memory, and exerts a beneficial impact on improving mood and attention. However, the effects and mechanisms of CGA on PTSD-like behaviors remain uncertain. This study is to explore the effects and mechanisms of CGA on PTSD by using network pharmacology analysis, molecular docking and experimental val

Distinct Contribution of Granular and Agranular Subdivisions of the Retrosplenial Cortex to Remote Contextual Fear Memory Retrieval.

The retrieval of recent and remote memories are thought to rely on distinct brain circuits and mechanisms. The retrosplenial cortex (RSC) is robustly activated during the retrieval of remotely acquired contextual fear memories (CFMs), but the contribution of particular subdivisions [granular (RSG) vs agranular retrosplenial area (RSA)] and the circuit mechanisms through which they interact to retrieve remote memories remain unexplored. In this study, using both anterograde and retrograde viral tracing approaches, we identified excitatory projections from layer 5 pyramidal neurons of the RSG to

Trauma exposure and ICD-11 PTSD and CPTSD in a Greenlandic adolescent population.

Background: Little peer-reviewed research has been done on trauma exposure, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD (CPTSD) prevalence among Greenlandic children and adolescents. There is a need for a validated Greenlandic version of the International Trauma Questionnaire - Child and Adolescent version (ITQ-CA) to assess symptoms of ICD-11 PTSD and CPTSD, as well as investigations of the prevalence of these disorders. This information is imperative in a Greenlandic context, where general epidemiological knowledge on traumatic exposure and reactions is lacking. Objective: The pres

Psychiatric disorders among the homeless: a comparison of older and younger groups.

The purpose of this study is to identify differences between older and younger homeless subgroups. Nine hundred homeless persons were interviewed using the National Institute of Mental Health Diagnostic Interview Schedule, and DSM-III-R diagnoses were made. Results showed that 79 (13%) of the 600 men and 10 (3%) of the 300 women were in the older (age > or = 50 years) group. Compared with their younger counterparts, older subjects were more likely to be male and white, to report lower incomes and poorer health, and to meet criteria for lifetime alcohol-use disorder. Fewer older than younger su
