The Effect of the Pyrethroid Pesticide Fenpropathrin on the Cardiac Performance of Zebrafish and the Potential Mechanism of Toxicity.

Fenpropathrin, a pyrethroid insecticide, has been widely used for many years in agricultural fields. It works by disturbing the voltage-gated sodium channel, leading to paralysis and the death of the target animal. While past studies have focused on neurodegeneration following fenpropathrin poisoning in humans, relatively few pieces of research have examined its effect on other peripheral organs. This study successfully investigated the potential toxicity of fenpropathrin on the cardiovascular system using zebrafish as an animal model. Zebrafish larvae exposed to varying doses of fenpropathrin

3K3A-Activated Protein C Protects the Blood-Brain Barrier and Neurons From Accelerated Ischemic Injury Caused by Pericyte Deficiency in Mice.

Pericytes, mural cells of brain capillaries, maintain the blood-brain barrier (BBB), regulate cerebral blood flow (CBF), and protect neurons against ischemic damage. To further investigate the role of pericytes in ischemia, we induced stroke by 45-min transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAo) in 6-month-old pericyte-deficient Pdgfrb + ⁣/- mice and control Pdgfrb+/+ littermates. Compared to controls, Pdgfrb + ⁣/- mice showed a 26% greater loss of CBF during early reperfusion, and 40-50% increase in the infarct and edema volumes and motor neurological score 24 h after tMCAo. These chang

The Use of Vigileo® Monitor in a Parturient With Severe Mitral Valve Stenosis and Severe Pulmonary Hypertension Undergoing Cesarean Section Under General Anesthesia: A Case Report and Literature Review.

We report a case of a 35-year-old pregnant female of Afghan origin who was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) because of pulmonary edema development when she was in the 30th week of gestation. During the bedside examination, the transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) revealed severe mitral valve stenosis and pulmonary hypertension. The patient went into treatment with metoprolol for the control of tachycardia and furosemide for the prevention of fluid overload. During the 32nd week of gestation, the medical council decided on a cesarean section (CS) to be carried out under general anesthesi

Hippocampal atrophy and cognitive function in transient ischemic attack and minor stroke patients over three years.

INTRODUCTION: Transient ischemic attack (TIA) and minor ischemic stroke (IS) is associated with a increased risk of late life dementia. In this study we aim to study the extent to which the rates of hippocampal atrophy in TIA/IS differ from healthy controls, and how they are correlated to neuropsychological measurements. METHODS: TIA or minor stroke patients were tested with a neuropsychological battery including tests of executive function, and verbal and non-verbal memory at three time points out to 3 years. Annualized rates of hippocampal atrophy in TIA/IS patients were compared to control

Unusual double-chambered right ventricle induced by ruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm: A case report.

A 54-year-old male with a history of unrepaired ventricular septal defect (VSD) suffered from easy fatigability on exertion. A Levine grade V/VI continuous murmur was auscultated. Transthoracic echocardiogram showed a ruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SVA) and a significant left-to-right shunting from the ascending aorta to the right ventricle (RV). In addition, a 36 mmHg of pressure gradient was observed between the inflow and outflow tract in the RV, suggesting double-chambered RV (DCRV). Cardiac catheterization also revealed 33 mmHg of the pressure gradient in the mid-potion of the RV, w

Clinical and echocardiographic features of paradoxical low-flow and normal-flow severe aortic stenosis patients with concomitant mitral regurgitation.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) coexists in a significant proportion of patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS), and portends inferior therapeutic outcomes. In severe AS, MR is thought to contribute to a low-flow state by decreasing forward stroke volume. We investigated concomitant MR on the clinical and echocardiographic features of patients with "paradoxical" low-flow (PLF) and normal-flow (NF) severe AS. Clinical and echocardiographic profiles of 886 consecutive patients with index echocardiographic diagnosis of severe AS (AVA < 1.0 cm2) were analysed retrospectively. All patients had preserve

Remote limb ischemic postconditioning promotes motor function recovery in a rat model of ischemic stroke via the up-regulation of endogenous tissue kallikrein.

AIMS: Remote ischemic conditionings, such as pre- and per-conditioning, are known to provide cardioprotection in animal models of ischemia. However, little is known about the neuroprotection effect of postconditioning after cerebral ischemia. In this study, we aim to evaluate the motor function rescuing effect of remote limb ischemic postconditioning (RIPostC) in a rat model of acute cerebral stroke. METHODS: Left middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was performed to generate the rat model of ischemic stroke, followed by daily RIPostC treatment for maximum 21 days. The motor function after

Daily kiwifruit consumption did not improve blood pressure and markers of cardiovascular function in men with hypercholesterolemia.

Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption is a key lifestyle modification in the prevention and treatment of hypertension. Kiwifruit has previously been shown to have favorable effects on blood pressure (BP), likely through inhibiting angiotensin I-converting enzyme activity. We hypothesized that the replacement of 2 fruit servings in a healthy diet with 2 green kiwifruit a day would significantly improve BP and other markers of cardiovascular function, including heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output, and total peripheral resistance, in a group of hypercholesterolemic men. Using a control

Prognostic impact of global left ventricular hemodynamic afterload in severe aortic stenosis with preserved ejection fraction.

INTRODUCTION: Global left ventricular (LV) afterload as assessed by valvulo-arterial impedance (Zva), may be an independent predictor of mortality in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) and preserved LV ejection fraction (LVEF). However, its quantification using echocardiography may be subject to error measurement. We aimed to determine the prevalence and impact on long-term survival of high Zva, purposely measured by cardiac catheterization. METHODS AND RESULTS: 676 patients with preserved LVEF and severe AS without other valvular heart diseases underwent cardiac catheterization. Zva w

Magnetic resonance angiography signal intensity as a marker of hemodynamic impairment in intracranial arterial stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial arterial stenosis (ICAS) is the predominant cause of ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack in Asia. Change of signal intensities (SI) across an ICAS on magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) may reflect its hemodynamic severity. METHODS: In-patients with a symptomatic single ICAS detected on 3D time-of-flight MRA were recruited from 2 hospitals. Baseline and 1-year follow-up data were collected. Signal intensity ratio (SIR) [ =  (mean post-stenotic SI -mean background SI)/(mean pre-stenotic SI - mean background SI)] was evaluated on baseline MRA to represent cha

Crossed cerebellar diaschisis in acute ischemic stroke: a study with serial SPECT and MRI.

This study evaluated the relationship between crossed cerebellar diaschisis (CCD) and (1) lesion volume and location in the acute phase and 1 week after stroke onset and (2) clinical outcome. Twenty-two patients with cerebral ischemic stroke underwent single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within 48 h and on day 8 from onset. Interhemispheric asymmetric indices (AI) on SPECT were calculated for medial, intermediate, and lateral zones of the cerebellum. Lesion volumes and locations were obtained from diffusion-weighted MRI. Neurological status an

Differential alterations in cardiovascular responses during the progression of polymicrobial sepsis in the mouse.

Although the mouse has been extensively used to study immune consequences of sepsis and other genetic anomalies, the changes in various cardiovascular parameters such as cardiac output, organ perfusion, as well as oxygen utilization have not been characterized in this species during sepsis. To determine this, polymicrobial sepsis was induced in male adult C3H/NeN mice by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP, two punctures with a 22-gauge needle). The animals were then resuscitated with normal saline subcutaneously. At 5 or 24 h after CLP (time points previously shown to be within the hyperdynamic

Effects of graded doses of epinephrine during asphxia-induced bradycardia in newborn lambs.

To study the hemodynamic effects of graded doses of epinephrine (EPI) in a newborn animal model of hemodynamically significant bradycardia, we performed the following study. Ten newborn lambs were chronically instrumented with catheters and flow transducers so that systemic, pulmonary arterial, left atrial and right atrial pressures as well as heart rate, cardiac output and left carotid artery flow could be monitored. During each of five asphyxia induced bradycardia episodes, with cardiac output depressed to approximately 30% of baseline, lambs were given either 0, 1, 10, 50, or 100 micrograms

Beyond Atrial Fibrillation: Clinical and Echocardiographic Predictors of Ischaemic Stroke and Systemic Thromboembolism in Rheumatic Heart Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the best-established thromboembolic risk factor in rheumatic heart disease (RHD), but stroke and thromboembolism also occur without documented AF. We systematically synthesised associations between non-AF clinical/echocardiographic predictors and thromboembolism in RHD, comparing AF-adjusted with unadjusted estimates. METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched, supplemented by Google Scholar and citation screening. Eligible studies evaluated RHD patients with ≥1 non-AF predictor of stroke or thromboembolism. Two reviewers per

Extracellular lactate enhances IL-10 transcription via H4K5 lactylation and promotes an A2-like reactive-astrocyte phenotype after ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke triggers a rapid rise in lactate levels in the brain tissue. The neuroprotective role of exogenous lactate administered during the reperfusion phase has recently garnered attention. A neuroprotective A2 phenotype of reactive astrocytes (RACs) is characterized by interleukin-10 (IL-10) upregulation, which mitigates neuroinflammation. However, whether exogenous lactate drives A2-like polarization of RACs remains unknown. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism by which lactate regulates this process. METHODS: Rat middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and in vit

Intermittent hypoxia ameliorates behavioral deficits and exerts neurorestoration in a mouse photothrombotic stroke model.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke disproportionately impacts the elderly with a higher risk and poor repair. Current therapeutic options are constrained by narrow time windows, strict contraindications, and suboptimal efficacy in older patients, leaving a critical unmet clinical need. Hypoxia-based interventions exert preclinical neuroprotective effects, yet the effects and underlying mechanisms of intermittent hypoxia (IH) in elderly patients with ischemic stroke remain unclear. METHODS: This study tested IH in 25-month-old C57BL/6J mice with photothrombotic (PT) stroke, randomizing to Control, PT

Neurokinin B Inhibition Preserves BBB Integrity in Ischemic Stroke via Suppression of Egr-1-Mediated Claudin-5 Downregulation.

Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) dysfunction acts as a key mediator of ischemic brain injury, contributing to brain edema, inflammatory cell infiltration, and neuronal damage. The integrity of the BBB is largely maintained by tight junction proteins, such as Claudin-5, and its disruption exacerbates neurological deficits. Neurokinin B (NKB), a neuropeptide that belongs to the tachykinin family, has been implicated in various physiological processes, including neuroinflammation and vascular function. However, the precise effects of NKB on BBB integrity during ischemic stroke have not been thoroughly i
