High-Strength Degradable Transparent Bio-Electronics Enabled by Confined Crystallization in Aligned Nanofibers for AI-Assisted Motion Sensors.

The severe environmental impact of conventional plastic electronics necessitates next-generation wearable devices simultaneously embodying high performance, flexibility, and sustainability. Herein, we propose a 1D nano-confined high-pressure crystallization strategy to create highly-crystalline, yet highly-transparent bio-based fiber films to meet these requirements. The bacterial copolymer poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)-based electrospun fibrous film, with 1D-confined oriented crystallites in the aligned nanofibers, can be transformed from opaque to transparent by heating a

Integrated Wireless Sensor System Featuring Liquid-Repellent Interfaces for Reliable Pressure Ulcer Monitoring.

Continuous interface pressure monitoring is essential for proactive pressure ulcer (PU) prevention, yet the reliability of flexible capacitive sensors is frequently compromised by the accumulation of sweat and biofluids in clinical settings. The fundamental challenge arises from the significant dielectric mismatch between aqueous fluids and sensor materials, where fluid infiltration leads to severe signal distortion. Here, we present a liquid-immune wireless sensor system that leverages a robust superhydrophobic interface to eliminate this interference. The sensor unit features a hierarchical

Development of artificial latent fingerprint solution using a novel lipid composition and printing.

Latent fingerprint research requires reproducible test materials that realistically mimic natural prints for the evaluation of development techniques. This study presents a novel artificial latent fingerprint solution that incorporates lipid components derived from the human body, simulating the composition of natural sweat and sebum, and combines them with traditional amino acid-based solutions. To improve solubility of non-polar lipid molecules, a 1:1 (v/v) mixture of n-hexane and isopropyl alcohol was used as the solvent, and the solution was loaded into printer cartridges to deposit standa

Genotype-phenotype correlation of CFTR variants in cystic fibrosis patients.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-limiting autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the CFTR gene. In Turkiye, high genetic diversity and consanguinity contribute to a heterogeneous CFTR variant spectrum; however, genotype-phenotype data remain limited. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 92 Turkish CF patients (36 homozygous, 56 compound heterozygous) to characterize CFTR variant diversity and clinical outcomes. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed and confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Clinical data were analyzed using chi-square and nonparametric tests (

Autonomic dysfunction in patients with wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysfunction is well recognized in hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv), but it has not been systematically studied in wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRwt). Because ATTRwt primarily presents with cardiomyopathy, autonomic symptoms may mimic heart failure and lead to inappropriate treatment. Here we aimed to investigate the presence and extent of autonomic dysfunction in ATTRwt. METHODS: In ATTRwt patients and controls, we performed an extensive autonomic examination, including standardized questionnaires, passive and active orthostatic challenges, Valsalva

The Promising Role of Intestinal Organoids in the Diagnostic Work-Up of Cystic Fibrosis Screen Positive Inconclusive Diagnosis/CFTR-Related Metabolic Syndrome (CFSPID/CRMS).

Cystic Fibrosis Screen Positive Inconclusive Diagnosis/CFTR-related Metabolic Syndrome (CFSPID/CRMS) presents a significant clinical challenge due to its variable diagnostic outcomes and uncertain disease progression. Current diagnostic strategies, including sweat chloride testing and genetic analysis fall short in delivering clear guidance for clinical decision-making and risk assessment. Here, we comment on the potential of CFTR functional tests in patient-derived intestinal organoids (PDIOs) to enhance early risk stratification in CFSPID/CRMS cases. Using four hypothetical cases based on re

The treatment with Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor significantly increases serum bilirubin and decreases blood platelets in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis homozygous or double heterozygous for the F508del CFTR variant.

The Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor (ETI) combination of cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator modulators is safe and effective even in children with at least one F508del variant. However, cases of liver damage have been reported, and we observed an increase of serum bilirubin and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) adults homozygous or compound heterozygous for the F508del after one year of ETI treatment. In the present study we followed 106 people with CF (pwCF) aged 8-15 years, who were homozygous or compound heterozygous for the F508del variant and treated with ETI, m

Clinical management and outcomes of hepatobiliary disease in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator modulator era.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Multiple cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators are approved for the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF) and show significant improvement in lung function, BMI, quality of life, and sweat chloride. However, their ability to impact liver disease is unclear. This review highlights the current published literature on CFTR modulators and liver health and briefly reviews considerations for clinical management of hepatobiliary disease in the CFTR modulator era. RECENT FINDINGS: Currently, the primary data available on the clinical efficacy of CFTR mod

A Novel Pathogenic TSPEAR Variant in a Family with Clinical Variability: Definition of Dental Anomalies and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) represent a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders marked by impaired development of multiple tissue derivatives originating from the human ectoderm, including teeth, hair, nails, and sweat glands. Advances in next-generation sequencing technology have facilitated the identification of novel genes, such as TSPEAR, contributing to the emergence of the ectodermal dysplasia-14 of the hair/tooth type (ECTD14) phenotype, primarily characterized by hypotrichosis, hypodontia, and dysmorphic features. METHODS: Five individuals from the same family were incl

KCTD1/KCTD15-Mediated Repression of AP-2α/AP-2β Is Required for Proper Skin Appendage Development and Epidermal Homeostasis.

The transcriptional regulation of skin appendage morphogenesis during development is poorly understood. We identified a previously unknown critical role of KCTD1/KCTD15 complexes in keratinocytes for the proper formation of skin appendages. Individuals with dominant-negative mutations in KCTD1/KCTD15 have sparse hair and anhidrosis, and mice lacking KCTD1 and KCTD15 in keratinocytes have diminished sweat glands and sebaceous glands as well as progressive hair sparseness. In this study, we show that these phenotypes are a consequence of the lack of the repressor function of KCTD1/KCTD15 complex

Carbomer Hydrogels with Microencapsulated α-Tocopherol: Focus on the Biocompatibility of the Microcapsules, Topical Application Attributes, and In Vitro Release Study.

The microencapsulation of α-tocopherol based on the complex coacervation of low-molecular-weight chitosan (LMWC) and sodium lauryl ether sulphate (SLES) without harmful crosslinkers can provide biocompatible carriers that protect it from photodegradation and air oxidation. In this study, the influence of the microcapsule wall composition on carrier performance, compatibility with a high-water-content vehicle for topical application, and release of α-tocopherol were investigated. Although the absence of aldehyde crosslinkers decreased the encapsulation efficiency of α-tocopherol (~70%), the var

A comprehensive study into false positive rates for 'other' biological samples using common presumptive testing methods.

The identification of biological fluids or materials in forensic samples is a key requirement in forensic science that relies on chemical and biological based tests, most of which exhibit false positivity. When reporting results from such tests, Forensic Scientists use words such as probable, possible, and likely, without always being able to provide robust support for these conclusions. In collating information about false positive rates for a number of these tests, we found limited research into the cross reactions observed from 'other' biological samples in commonly encountered case sample

Pathologically Confirmed Subcutaneous Fat and Lymphovascular Invasion of a Hypopigmented Area in Extramammary Paget Disease.

Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare adenocarcinoma that usually occurs in areas of the body that are rich in apocrine sweat glands. Great depth of tumor invasion is a well-known risk factor for worse prognosis. Paget cells usually are limited to the epidermis, whereas invasive EMPD, which infiltrates the dermis, is relatively rare. It is even rarer for the tumor to spread beyond the dermis. Only 3.1% of patients with EMPD of the penis and scrotum have exhibited infiltration of the subcutaneous fat layer. We report a case of a 62-year-old male with EMPD that invaded the subcutaneous fat

Burkitt's Lymphoma of the Breast in an HIV-Positive Patient: A Rare Presentation.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is the most common female cancer worldwide, affecting 13.5-30 per 100,000 women in sub-Saharan Africa. The most common histopathologic variants of breast cancer are those that originate from the glandular epithelium of the breast. Primary breast lymphomas are uncommon, and they represent only 0.04%-0.5% of all breast cancers. Burkitt lymphoma is the least of this rare group. The report intends to present Burkitt's lymphoma, a rare histopathological diagnosis of primary breast tumour in an HIV+ patient. Description of a case of bilateral breast disease and the histop

Candidate signatures of positive selection for environmental adaptation in indigenous African cattle: A review.

Environmental adaptation traits of indigenous African cattle are increasingly being investigated to respond to the need for sustainable livestock production in the context of unpredictable climatic changes. Several studies have highlighted genomic regions under positive selection probably associated with adaptation to environmental challenges (e.g. heat stress, trypanosomiasis, tick and tick-borne diseases). However, little attention has focused on pinpointing the candidate causative variant(s) controlling the traits. This review compiled information from 22 studies on signatures of positive s
