No effect of abstinence time on nerve electrophysiological test in premature ejaculation patients.

The nerve electrophysiological tests may differentiate the treatment of primary premature ejaculation (PPE) in our previous studies. However, no study verifies if the results will be affected by abstinence time. From January to December in 2016, fifty PPE patients ejaculated within 2 min and 28 control subjects were enrolled. The nerve electrophysiological tests, including dorsal nerve somatosensory evoked potential (DNSEP), glans penis somatosensory evoked potential (GPSEP), and penile sympathetic skin response (PSSR), were recorded before and immediately after ejaculation. The abstinence day

Cardiac sympathetic denervation predicts PD in at-risk individuals.

INTRODUCTION: By the time a person develops the motor manifestations of Parkinson's disease (PD), substantial loss of nigrostriatal dopamine neurons has already occurred. There is great interest in identifying biomarkers that can detect pre-clinical PD. Braak's neuropathological staging concept imputes early autonomic involvement. Here we report results from a small prospective cohort study about the utility of neuroimaging evidence of cardiac sympathetic denervation in predicting PD among individuals with multiple PD risk factors. METHODS: Subjects provided information about family history o

Adaptive servo-ventilation therapy improves cardiac sympathetic nerve activity, cardiac function, exercise capacity, and symptom in patients with chronic heart failure and Cheyne-Stokes respiration.

PURPOSE: Adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV) therapy has been reported to be effective for improving central sleep apnea (CSA) and chronic heart failure (CHF). The purpose of this study was to clarify whether ASV is effective for CSA, cardiac sympathetic nerve activity (CSNA), cardiac symptoms/function, and exercise capacity in CHF patients with CSA and Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR-CSA). METHODS: In this study, 31 CHF patients with CSR-CSA and a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤ 40% were randomized into an ASV group and a conservative therapy (non-ASV) group for 6 month. Microsurgical anatomy of the human carotid body (glomus caroticum): Features of its detailed topography, syntopy and morphology.

The human glomus caroticum (GC) is not readily accessible during ordinary anatomical teaching courses because of insufficient time and difficulties encountered in the preparation. Accordingly, most anatomical descriptions of its location, relationship to neighboring structures, size and shape are supported only by drawings, but not by photographs. The aim of this study is to present the GC with all associated roots and branches. Following microscope-assisted dissection and precise photo-documentation, a detailed analysis of location, syntopy and morphology was performed. We carried out this st

Puerarin alleviates aggravated sympathoexcitatory response induced by myocardial ischemia via regulating P2X3 receptor in rat superior cervical ganglia.

Myocardial ischemia elicits a sympathoexcitatory response characterized by increase in blood pressure and sympathetic nerve activity. Puerarin, a major active ingredient extracted from the traditional Chinese plant medicine Ge-gen, has been widely used in treatment of myocardial and cerebral ischemia. However, little is known about the mechanism. Our study was aimed to explore the effect of puerarin on sympathoexcitatory response induced by myocardial ischemic injury and possible relationship with P2X3 receptor. Our results showed that puerarin alleviated systolic blood pressure and heart rate

Trigger point-related sympathetic nerve activity in chronic sciatic leg pain: a case study.

Sciatica has classically been associated with irritation of the sciatic nerve by the vertebral disc and consequent inflammation. Some authors suggest that active trigger points in the gluteus minimus muscle can refer pain in similar way to sciatica. Trigger point diagnosis is based on Travel and Simons criteria, but referred pain and twitch response are significant confirmatory signs of the diagnostic criteria. Although vasoconstriction in the area of a latent trigger point has been demonstrated, the vasomotor reaction of active trigger points has not been examined. We report the case of a 22-

The carotid body as a putative therapeutic target for the treatment of neurogenic hypertension.

In the spontaneously hypertensive (SH) rat, hyperoxic inactivation of the carotid body (CB) produces a rapid and pronounced fall in both arterial pressure and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSA). Here we show that CB de-afferentation through carotid sinus nerve denervation (CSD) reduces the overactive sympathetic activity in SH rats, providing an effective antihypertensive treatment. We demonstrate that CSD lowers RSA chronically and that this is accompanied by a depressor response in SH but not normotensive rats. The drop in blood pressure is not dependent on renal nerve integrity but mech

Cardiac sympathetic denervation in Parkinson's disease patients with SWEDDs.

Dopamine transporter scans of some patients who have been clinically diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD) fail to reveal abnormal dopaminergic functioning and are referred to as scans without evidence of dopaminergic deficits (SWEDDs). In this study, we investigated the differences between SWEDDs patients and PD patients using (123)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scans. This study enrolled 20 patients with SWEDDs, 30 patients with early PD and 50 healthy controls. Cardiac (123)I-MIBG scans were performed on all subjects, and parameters including the early and delayed heart-to-mediastinum r

Short-term exposure to hypoxia for work and leisure activities in health and disease: which level of hypoxia is safe?

INTRODUCTION: Exposures to natural and simulated altitudes entail reduced oxygen availability and thus hypoxia. Depending on the level of hypoxia, the duration of exposure, the individual susceptibility, and preexisting diseases, health problems of variable severity may arise. Although millions of people are regularly or occasionally performing mountain sport activities, are transported by airplanes, and are more and more frequently exposed to short-term hypoxia in athletic training facilities or at their workplace, e.g., with fire control systems, there is no clear consensus on the level of h

Study of sympathetic skin response in visceral leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Neurologic changes in visceral leishmaniasis are rarely reported. Some articles have reported symptoms suggestive of peripheral neuropathy and showed some degree of axonal degeneration and demyelination. The main purpose of the present study was to identify and quantitatively evaluate sympathetic dysfunction in VL. METHOD: Twenty patients with visceral leishmaniasis and 20 healthy controls were studied. All the patients and controls were examined at first and skin sympathetic response was measured in all of the patients and control group by standard protocol. RESULTS: The patient

Effect of sympathectomy level on the incidence of compensatory hyperhidrosis after sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis.

OBJECTIVE: Palmar hyperhidrosis can be psychosocially devastating. Sympathectomy provides effective treatment. The most common side effect after sympathectomy is compensatory hyperhidrosis, which can be debilitating. Controversy exists as to which and how many levels treated carry the lowest incidence of compensatory hyperhidrosis after sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis. METHODS: Retrospective review was conducted on a video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical database including all patients who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis. RESULTS:

Paradoxical shortening of sympathetic skin response latency at distal recording sites.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate and to discuss the neurophysiological mechanism of paradoxical shortening of the sympathetic skin response (SSR) latency at distal recording sites. METHODS: The latency and peak-to-peak amplitude of SSRs evoked by magnetic stimuli were analyzed. Eight active electrodes were placed on the palmar (anterior) and dorsal (posterior) sides of the hand (forearm) proximal to the distal arrangement. RESULTS: SSRs from two palm sites had significantly shorter latencies and larger amplitudes than the SSRs at the other six sites, including the prox

Cervical sympathetic schwannoma with postoperative first bite syndrome.

Extracranial schwannomas occurring in the head and neck region may arise from cranial, peripheral or autonomic nerves. Determination of the nerve of origin is not often made until the time of surgery. Schwannomas arising from the cervical sympathetic chain are extremely rare. These interesting tumors along with schwannomas in general and the remaining class of neurogenic tumors are known for their ability to mimic the physical and radiological findings of carotid body tumors. Surgery is the treatment of choice and major complications are infrequent. However, we report a case of cervical sympat
