Cardiac disease is commonly associated with virtually every form of muscular dystrophy and myopathy. A double-blind and open crossover trial on the oral administration of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) to 12 patients with progressive muscular dystrophies and neurogenic atrophies was conducted. These diseases included the Duchenne, Becker, and limb-girdle dystrophies, myotonic dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and Welander disease. The impaired cardiac function was noninvasively and extensively monitored by impedance cardiography. Solely by significant change or no change in stroke volume and cardi

BACKGROUND/AIM: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a severe adverse effect associated with anti-resorptive medications like nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (N-BPs), particularly zoledronate (ZOL). This study aimed to investigate whether a BP analog with high bone affinity but minimal anti-resorptive activity, NE-58051, could induce MRONJ-like lesions in a mouse model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Female C57BL/6J mice (n=6 per group) were administered ZOL (250 μg/kg intravenously, twice weekly) for one or two weeks, or NE-58051 (250 μg/kg intravenously, twice weekly) for two

This case reports the retreatment of a young adult who had a previous orthodontic history of inappropriate biomechanical strategies leading to iatrogenic effects with the formation of a dual occlusal plane causing anterior dental extrusion. As a result, an already severe dento-skeletal malocclusion with a vertical growth pattern, severe gummy smile, increased overjet and a very deep bite along with procumbent and incompetent lips became exaggerated. The high smile line and heavy convex profile were changed to an average smile line and a straight profile by intruding the anterior maxillary segm

We report the successful management of general anesthesia for a patient with Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD). PMD is one of a group of progressive, degenerative disorders of the cerebral white matter. The typical clinical manifestations of PMD include psychomotor retardation, nystagmus, abnormal muscle tone, seizures, and cognitive impairment. General anesthesia for a patient with PMD may be difficult mainly because of seizures and airway complications related to poor pharyngeal muscle control. In addition, the possibility of exacerbation of spasticity should be considered. A 20-year-old ma

Seeking to describe the clinical and radiologic features of localized idiopathic apical root resorption (LIAR), the authors conducted a dental literature review of idiopathic external root resorption and performed a retrospective study of LIAR among the identified cases retrieved from a private general practice. Cases involved five patients--one female and four males--ranging in age from 15 to 48 years. The authors concluded that LIAR appears to be a distinct but uncommon clinicopathologic condition that is self-limiting, and therefore warrants no definitive treatment. However, the condition,

INTRODUCTION: The present study aimed at developing an experimental model in rat molars for evaluating treatment strategies in necrotic immature teeth.
METHODS: To define the periods to be adopted in the experimental procedures and to confirm induction of periapical lesions and interruption of root embryogenesis, the left lower first molars of 4-weeks-old Wistar rats underwent pulpectomy and were left open to the oral environment. Comparisons with the right lower first molars (vital teeth) were performed in animals with ages of 7, 10, 13, and 16 weeks. In another group of animals the teeth we

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the reasons for failure of orthodontic treatment for impacted maxillary canines and to recommend measures to overcome them.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients (ages, 17.4 +/- 4.3 years) with 37 maxillary impacted canines were referred after a failed attempt to resolve the impaction. Reasons for failure were analyzed, and corrective measures undertaken. The success rate of the revised treatments and the durations of both treatments were recorded.
RESULTS: The mean duration of the failed treatments was 26.2 +/- 17.2 months. The failed treatments we

Special care in dentistry : official publication of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry2003eng
People with special needs have more dental disease and more missing teeth than the general population. They also have reduced access to oral health diagnostic, preventive, interceptive and treatment services. If services are available, they can be complicated and costly. It is critical to prevent dental diseases in these individuals. This article presents a set of practical protocols for preventing dental disease in people with special needs. These protocols are designed to be used in community settings outside of a dental office.

To determine the incidence of atypical odontalgia/chronic neuropathic pain subsequent to surgical removal of impacted third molars, a telephone survey and a clinical investigation were carried out. Patients operated on for impacted mandibular third molars during 1994 96 in the Oral Surgery Clinic. School of Dentistry, University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway, were contacted by telephone. Answers were obtained from 1035 (71%) out of a total of 1458 operated patients. Median observation time was 5 years 9 months, ranging from 4 years 5 months to 6 years 9 months. All except 23 (2.2%) patients stated

Jaw bones resorb when teeth are lost. People cannot function as well with complete dentures compared with their natural teeth. As more people are living longer and these cumulative effects become increasingly documented, dentists in the 1970s attached more importance to keeping teeth. The concept of overdentures developed as a simple and economic alternative to prolong the retention and function of the last few teeth in a compromised dentition. The previous option was extensive fixed prosthodontics. An overdenture is a complete or removable partial denture that has one or more tooth roots to p

Nd:YAG laser-induced modification of the root surface may inhibit development of external inflammatory resorption in replanted teeth. This study tested this hypothesis in vivo. The pulp chambers of six mandibular premolars in each of two dogs were accessed, inoculated with plaque, and sealed (Groups 1, 2). Two additional premolars in each dog were endodontically treated without inoculation (Groups 3, 4). After 2 weeks, teeth were hemisected and extracted. Each root had a 2 x 3 mm surface area denuded of cementum on the buccal and lingual surface. In Groups 1 (n = 12 roots) and 3 (n = 4), the d

The increased use of implants in orthodontics has stimulated interest in augmenting bone in patients who have deficient alveolar ridges that preclude ideal implant placement. A nonsurgical technique for increasing the amount of available bone for implant site development and fixture placement is orthodontic extrusion, or forced eruption. The concept of a tooth moving coronally by orthodontic means and the clinical alterations in the soft tissue architecture of the periodontium demonstrated during orthodontic extrusive movement of periodontally compromised teeth have demonstrated a direct relat

BACKGROUND: The clinical spectrum of autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix–Saguenay (ARSACS) in Asian populations remains incompletely defined. We aimed to characterize the clinical, radiological, and genetic features of Japanese patients with ARSACS and to expand the mutational and phenotypic spectrum of this disorder. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case series of patients diagnosed with ARSACS in our department between January 2016 and December 2023. Five patients from four families with biallelic SACS variants were identified. RESULTS: Genetic analysis revealed seven patho

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder that gradually destroys tooth-supporting tissues including the alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and cementum. In recent years, interest has grown in repurposing metformin, a well-known oral antidiabetic drug, as an adjunct to periodontal therapy. Experimental studies have indicated that metformin can aid periodontal healing by promoting stem cell-driven regeneration, enhancing osteoblast activity, and reducing osteoclast-mediated resorption. Clinical trials have further reported that both systemic and local applications of metformin, w

Background/Objectives: Although gingivitis is the most common oral disease in children, periodontitis accompanied by alveolar bone resorption may develop in patients with severe congenital neutropenia. However, no reports to date have focused on changes in the alveolar bone of these patients during long-term follow-up. Case Summary: A girl aged 8 years and 5 months who developed leukemia due to severe neutropenia was admitted to the hospital and referred to the pediatric dentistry department for oral care. Panoramic radiographs at the first visit revealed significant alveolar bone resorption a

Periodontitis constitutes the primary cause of tooth loss among adults in China. The disease is characterized by the high morbidity, which significantly impairs both oral and systemic health. As the key insights of initial periodontal therapy, subgingival scaling and root planing (SRP) have been considered as simple, effective, and cost-efficient treatment approaches for managing periodontal inflammation. Substantial published evidences indicated that the majority of patients diagnosed with periodontitis could achieve lifelong retention of their natural teeth through standardized initial perio

Alveolar ridge resorption following tooth extraction or periodontal disease often necessitates bone augmentation to restore sufficient volume for stable and esthetic implant placement. However, conventional guided bone regeneration using collagen membranes demonstrates limited space maintenance and graft stability, particularly in complex defects. Additionally, harvesting autogenous bone requires a secondary surgical site, increasing morbidity and prolonging recovery. To address these limitations, we present the modified bone ring tenting technique, which utilizes autogenous bone blocks to ach
