Drought is a major abiotic stress limiting plant survival on tropical coral islands. Suriana maritima, an ecologically important shrub species in the Xisha Islands, shows strong adaptation to harsh coastal environments, but its molecular responses to drought remain poorly understood. Here, we integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to characterize leaf responses of S. maritima to progressive drought stress. Severe drought induced extensive transcriptional and metabolic reprogramming, accompanied by leaf yellowing, wilting and partial shedding. Stress-related genes, including those e

Citrus canker, caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc), severely impacts citrus production. This study developed a novel zinc oxide nanoparticles ROS-triggered generation system (ZnO NPs) as an effective bactericidal agent against Xcc. The ZnO NPs exhibited higher antibacterial activity than the commercially available pesticide zinc thiazole. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ZnO NPs (104.5 μg/mL) is 7.42 times higher than that of 104.5 μg/mL zinc thiazole. Additionally, 1 MIC of ZnO NPs and 1 MIC of zinc thiazole (690.5 μg/mL) exhibited similar therapeutic efficiency, with

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is increasingly recognized not merely as an immune-mediated disorder, but as a systems-level condition arising from dynamic interactions among host genetics, environmental exposures, the gut microbiome, and epigenetic regulation. While genetic susceptibility confers risk, accumulating evidence indicates that epigenetic mechanisms act as molecular integrators that translate environmental and microbial signals into sustained transcriptional programs governing immune tolerance, epithelial integrity and tissue repa

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive cardiopulmonary disorder characterized by excessive pulmonary vascular remodeling and aberrant proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs). Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbiota dysbiosis contributes to PH development. Cordycepin, a natural adenosine analogue derived from Cordyceps militaris, has demonstrated antiproliferative and microbiota-modulating properties; however, its mechanism of action in PH remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: Elucidate the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of cordycepin on P

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a therapeutically challenging neurodegenerative disease marked by profound disruptions in mitochondrial-redox axis. Current therapeutic agents such as Bromocriptine mesylate (BM) exhibit neuroprotective potential, however their clinical benefit remains largely symptomatic as they do not address the underlying cause of neurodegeneration. Moreover, the therapeutic efficacy of BM is compromised due to its poor solubility, low bioavailability, and inadequate brain penetration. To overcome these biological barriers and provide mechanistic interventions, we report the fir

To screen high-quality porcine-derived lactic acid bacteria for swine production, this study compared growth performance, acid production, acid and bile salt tolerance, and genome characteristics of Lactobacillus plantarum (MRS002), Lactobacillus amylovorus (MRS003), and Lactobacillus salivarius (MRS004). All experiments were performed with three biological replicates, and data were analyzed using the GraphPad Prism software 8.4.3 by one-way analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA) followed by Tukey's multiple comparison test (significance level p < 0.05). All three strains showed typical anaerobi

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a critical global public health problem. Untargeted metabolomics can identify metabolic alterations associated with childhood obesity, but pediatric evidence remains limited. This study characterized urinary metabolic profiles associated with overweight and obesity in children.
METHODS: A total of 120 first-grade primary school children were selected. The population comprised 40 children with normal weight, 40 children with overweight, and 40 children with obesity, with equal sex distribution in each group. Urinary metabolic profiles were analyzed using liquid

Clinical outcomes in hypertriglyceridemia-associated acute pancreatitis remain highly heterogeneous. Despite comparable lipid burdens, patients may experience anything from mild interstitial edema to fulminant necrotizing disease, a divergence that current models struggle to explain. Hypertriglyceridemia-associated acute pancreatitis (HTG-AP) now accounts for roughly one in nine acute pancreatitis cases worldwide, but serum triglyceride levels alone do not explain the significant East-West mortality gap (4.1% versus 1.0%). Emerging evidence shifts the focus away from the pancreas itself and to

The weaning period represents a critical developmental window during which the intestinal host-microbiota interaction network in piglets undergoes profound remodeling and becomes highly vulnerable to disruption. Abrupt dietary transition, reduced feed intake, environmental stressors, and pathogen exposure can collectively interfere with gut microbial succession, epithelial barrier maturation, mucosal immune homeostasis, and neuroendocrine regulation, thereby increasing the susceptibility of piglets to post-weaning diarrhea, intestinal inflammation, and growth retardation. Gut microorganisms co

Vascular allografts represent a potential alternative to autologous grafts when suitable vessels are unavailable. However, current preservation methods, particularly cryopreservation, lead to substantial endothelial damage and poor clinical outcomes. This study evaluated the long-term efficacy of an N-acetylhistidine-buffered, potassium-chloride-enriched and amino-acid-fortified solution augmented with iron chelators, as an advanced preservation solution (NTK-Chel), compared to histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) and normal saline for vascular graft storage. Thrombosis remains a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. During thrombosis, activated platelets and endothelial cells expose phosphatidylserine (PS) on their outer membranes, creating a surface that accelerates clot formation. Current antithrombotic therapies, such as heparin and warfarin, carry significant bleeding risks, highlighting the need for safer alternatives. In response, we developed a PS-targeting liposomal formulation composed of Zn-dipicolylamine (DPA)-cyanine-3[22,22] and 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (molar ratio 3:97). This DPA-harboring

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic inflammatory airway disease characterized by dysregulated type 2 immune responses and impaired mucosal immune regulation. Kynurenic acid (KYNA), an endogenous tryptophan metabolite with immunomodulatory properties, may influence inflammatory pathways, but its mechanisms in AR remain unclear. This study investigated KYNA in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced rat model of AR and examined the role of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) signaling.
METHODS: Rats were assigned to control, AR, vehicle, KYNA, desloratadine, and KYNA + AhR antagonist (CH223191) grou

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system characterized by progressive neuroinflammation and demyelination. Increasing evidence suggests that the gut microbiota contributes to MS pathogenesis through bidirectional gut-brain interactions; however, the underlying mechanistic framework remains incompletely defined.
METHODS: We performed a narrative synthesis of literature published from March 2010 to March 2026 using PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, and Wanfang Data. Relevant studies were critically evaluated to inte

Soil protists - a phylogenetically diverse group of unicellular eukaryotes, encompassing bacterivorous flagellates, predatory amoebae, fungivorous vampyrellids, and parasitic plasmodiophorids - exist at densities ranging from 10⁴ to 10⁸ cells per gram of soil, yet are systematically underrepresented in microbiome research compared to bacteria and fungi. This review presents soil protists as active regulators of microbial community structure, nutrient biogeochemistry, and functional ecosystem resilience, rather than just passive dwellers of the soil. Three interconnected mechanistic aspects are

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) remains a major clinical challenge, with highly variable responses to ketamine. Immune activation characterizes a subset of patients with TRD. The kynurenine pathway (KP), which integrates immunometabolic signals with glutamatergic neurotransmission, may provide candidate biomarkers to inform personalized treatment. We investigated whether KP metabolites and ratios are associated with ketamine response and clinical outcomes over time. Thirty adults with TRD received six intravenous ketamine infusions over three weeks. At baseline (D1), after the first infus
