BACKGROUND: Liver tissue ectopia occurs in less than 1% of cases, typically in areas adjacent to the liver, such as the gallbladder or spleen. Liver tissue ectopia within the heart is even rarer. This paper reports a case of histopathologically confirmed liver tissue ectopia in the right atrium. Additionally, it summarises the characteristics of twelve previously reported similar cases, offering new insights into liver tissue ectopia within cardiac chambers.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is a 31-year-old female who is obese and has had three pregnancies and three caesarean sections. She was

BACKGROUND: Central venous occlusion (CVO) is a severe complication in hemodialysis patients with tunneled cuffed catheters (TCC), leading to catheter dysfunction and poor outcomes. Optimal treatment remains controversial.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 123 hemodialysis patients with TCC dysfunction and CVO between February 2017 and December 2025. Patients underwent either exchange of the existing catheter or placement of a new catheter at a different venous site, with or without concurrent balloon angioplasty or stenting.
RESULTS: The cohort had a mean age of 61.02 ± 13.66 years

BACKGROUND: Understanding venous congestion is critical to the management of many illnesses, but assessing volume status can be challenging. The current gold standard for volume status assessment of right heart catheterization (RHC) is invasive, costly, and often unavailable. Venous Excess Ultrasound Score (VExUS) is a novel ultrasound protocol for to assessment of venous congestion using the inferior vena cava, hepatic, portal and renal veins. Though there is a much interest in the technique, the renal component of the exam is challenging to acquire. For this reason we aimed to see if a modif

It is essential to identify vascular anomalies of the thorax because of their potential association with congenital heart diseases and genetic abnormalities. Although some patients present with symptoms early in childhood, others remain asymptomatic until adulthood. However, certain anomalies can impact the prognosis significantly and necessitate tailored treatment strategies. Moreover, understanding the embryologic origins and anatomic variations of each vasculature is paramount because many of these anomalies arise from disruptions in the developmental process and can coexist simultaneously.

A 13-year-old intact female Shih Tzu presented with anorexia, panting and pain of unknown origin. Physical examination was normal except for a systolic murmur (grade 3/6). Abdominal radiographs revealed an ill-defined area of increased opacity in the mid-abdomen. A subsequent computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed a large, heterogeneously enhancing mass near the left adrenal gland, extensively invading the adjacent caudal vena cava, portal vein and splenic vein. This was accompanied by multiple metastatic lesions affecting the abdominal lymph nodes, lungs, liver and kidneys. Two distinct vasc

PURPOSE: In the modern era of robotic renal procedures and diagnostics, an even more detailed anatomical understanding than hitherto is necessary. Valves of the renal veins (RVV) have been underemphasized and have been disputed by some authors, and few textbooks describe them. The current anatomical study was performed to address such shortcomings in the literature.
METHODS: One hundred renal veins were studied in fifty adult formalin-fixed cadavers. Renal veins were removed from the abdomen after sectioning them flush with their entrance to the renal hilum. The inferior vena cava was then in

These findings provide significant implications for the enhancement of iliac vein stent implantation strategies and stent design. The prevalent use of stents for treating Iliac Vein Compression Syndrome (IVCS) has shown efficacy, yet the associated clinical adverse events, including stent restenosis and postoperative thrombosis, are significant concerns. Up to now, the mechanism how the stent implantation induces the restenosis and DVT is still unclear. Our study hypothesizes that these adverse outcomes arise from altered blood flow dynamics following stent implantation. Employing computationa

Inferior vena cava thrombosis (IVCT) is rare. Thrombophilia is one of the important risk factors. It is also uncommon for gene mutations in F9 gene to cause thrombosis but not hemorrhage. A 35-year-old male patient was admitted to our department with left lower limb swelling without an obvious cause for 1 day. Through contrast-enhanced computed tomography and color Doppler ultrasound, he was found to have lower extremity deep vein thrombosis, IVCT and pulmonary embolism. Through whole-exome sequencing analysis, he was found to carry a 925.7 kb duplication (chrX:137939698-138865419, hg19) encom

BACKGROUND: Interrupted inferior vena cava (IVC) is a rare developmental defect characterized by azygos continuation following failure of fusion of one or more of the component parts of the embryological IVC. It occurs in approximately one in 5000 of the general population. It is usually an isolated finding and is generally asymptomatic.
CASE SUMMARY: A 42-year-old patient presented for further clarification of syncope with a 4-day history of persistent exertional dyspnoea. Computed tomography revealed a central pulmonary artery embolism on both sides, with prominent azygos and hemiazygos vei

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a T-cell-mediated liver disease characterized by elevated transaminases, circulating autoantibodies, hypergammaglobulinemia, and interface hepatitis. A 66-year-old female patient visited our department due to recurrent episodes of altered consciousness, sleep-wake inversion, and asterixis, indicating hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Her liver biopsy results clearly demonstrated interface hepatitis. The patient's severe HE does not parallel her relatively stable liver function and was attributed to a wide retroperitoneal collateral vein shunting blood directly into the

Retroesophageal or retrotracheal left brachiocephalic vein (LBCV) is a rare anatomic variant that is often associated with congenital heart disease. It is rarely reported in fetal life, and an isolated fetal retroesophageal LBCV has a good prognosis: it is typically asymptomatic, although respiratory symptoms or swallowing disorders occasionally occur. A variant was observed on fetal echocardiography at 22+6 weeks of gestation. The 3-vessel view revealed a transverse section of a vessel to the left of the pulmonary artery. Tracing upwards along its long axis showed that the left subclavian vei

We report the first documented case of leiomyosarcoma at zone II-III of inferior vena cava with thrombi in three hepatic veins undergoing ex vivo liver resection and autotransplantation (ELRA) and hepatic veins thrombectomy. A 33-year-old female patient presented with abdominal distention and lower extremities edema. Abdominal wall varicosis and shifting dullness were positive on physical examination. Her liver function was classified as Child-Pugh B and a solid tumor at retro-hepatic vena cava extending to right atrium with thrombi in three hepatic veins were confirmed. The diagnosis of leiom

Double aortic arch (DAA) is a rare congenital anomaly of the heart and aorta in which a vascular ring that surrounds the trachea and esophagus is formed. In most patients, respiratory distress and dysphagia develop in childhood, and asymptomatic adult patients are rarely known. Herein, we describe a patient with lung cancer and DAA. A 66-year-old man who had DAA underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic right upper lobectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection for primary lung cancer. Lymph node dissection of the right upper mediastinum revealed that the right recurrent laryngeal nerve branched

INTRODUCTION: Central venous catheter applications and complications are closely related to the tip position. Previous studies have reported some rare cases of catheter misplacement. Here, we report a case of misplacement of a peripherally inserted central catheter into the lateral thoracic vein.
CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old cancer patient underwent placement of a peripherally inserted central catheter through the left basilic vein under ultrasound-guided puncture. The catheterisation procedure was uneventful, so the catheter was believed to be in the superior vena cava. However, the post-anter

We report the case of a 71-year-old man affected by testicular large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), treated with right orchiectomy and first-line chemotherapy (R-CHOP, 8 cycles). A complete remission was obtained after therapy. Twenty-two months after the primary diagnosis the patient suddenly presented dyspnoea and superior vena cava syndrome; thus, he underwent a CT scan that revealed a large mass in the right atrium, expanding to the superior vena cava. A differential diagnosis between a neoplastic mass and a clot was proposed. The subsequent MR did not clarify the nature of the mass; therefore,

BACKGROUND: Bone cement augmentation with polymethylmethacrylate is a reliable method for stabilizing osteoporotic compression fractures and improving fixation of pedicle screws. However, cement extrusion into the vertebral venous system can result in pulmonary cement embolism. The goal of this anatomic study was to identify the relationship between the internal/external vertebral plexus and neighboring abdominal caval system.
METHODS: Thirty-two lumbar vertebral levels were used in this study. Anterior abdominal dissection was performed to access the lumbar vertebral bodies through the perit

Unroofed coronary sinus syndrome (UCSS), also named coronary sinus septal defect, is a rare type of atrial septal defect with the incidence less than 1% of the total number of atrial septal defects. It is caused by incomplete formation of left atrial venous folds during embryonic development. Here we reported a patient with UCSS, who was treated in the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University. The patient was 50 years old and the main clinical manifestations were fatigue and shortness of breath after repeated exercise. Color Doppler echocardiography showed coronary sinus dilatation

CASE SUMMARY: A 3-year-old neutered female domestic shorthair cat presented for a 2-week history of hyporexia, lethargy and weight loss. Aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and cholesterol were mildly elevated. Thoracic radiographs identified a lobulated soft tissue opacity in the caudal thorax to the right of midline, with the border effacing the caudal vena cava and broad-based towards the diaphragm. The broad base was suggestive of diaphragmatic hernia, with the other radiographic features and location suggestive of caval foramen hernia. Ultrasound confirmed diaphragmatic h

BACKGROUND: In majority of children bidirectional Glenn shunt is a safe and efficacious procedure with minimal post-operative issues. Rarely, there may be dysfunction in the Glenn pathway due loss of anatomical integrity or derangements in normal physiological or hemodynamic milieu. We report 4 cases in the last 3 years (2016-2019) where complications in the Glenn circuit led to serious consequences requiring transcatheter interventions.
CASE PRESENTATION: Two of our patients presented with frank features of superior vena cava syndrome. One of them had right Glenn anastomotic site narrowing l

BACKGROUND: We report a modified transplantation surgical technique for CHD with dextrocardia which is rare and surgically challenging.
METHODS: From January 2015 to May 2018, 5 patients with end-stage CHD with dextrocardia underwent heart transplantation at our institute. They were 10, 29, 13, 15, and 22 years old, respectively; 3 of them had dextroversion, and the other 2 had mirror-image dextrocardia and post-TCPC. The atrial-atrial anastomosis was performed first between the donor's upper-left PVO and the recipient's lower-left PVO. The apex thereby rotated approximately 90° clockwise (to
