A new primate model of hypophyseal dysfunction.

For pituitary regenerative medicine, the creation of a hypophyseal model in monkeys is necessary to conduct future preclinical studies; however, previous studies reported that hypophysectomy in monkeys is not always safe or satisfactory. This study aimed to create a hypophyseal dysfunction model in a cynomolgus monkey using a safer surgical technique and establish the protocol of pituitary hormone replacement therapy for this model. Surgical resection of the pituitary gland of a 7.8-year-old healthy adult cynomolgus male monkey weighing 5.45 kg was performed to create a hypophyseal dysfunction

Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields Ameliorate Skeletal Deterioration in Bone Mass, Microarchitecture, and Strength by Enhancing Canonical Wnt Signaling-Mediated Bone Formation in Rats with Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to extensive bone loss and high incidence of low-energy fractures. Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) treatment, as a non-invasive biophysical technique, has proven to be efficient in promoting osteogenesis. The potential osteoprotective effect and mechanism of PEMF on SCI-related bone deterioration, however, remain unknown. The spinal cord of rats was transected at vertebral level T12 to induce SCI. Thirty rats were assigned to the control, SCI, and SCI+PEMF groups (n = 10). One week after surgery, the SCI+PEMF rats were subjected to PEMF (2.0 mT, 15 Hz, 2 h/d

A Case Series of Malignant Otitis Externa Mimicking Malignancy.

Malignant otitis externa is an inflammation of the external auditory canal with preceding osteomyelitis of the temporal bone and the adjacent structures that could be potentially lethal. Malignant otitis externa may present with cranial nerve involvements and massive spread of disease mimicking nasopharyngeal carcinoma or any other malignancies on imaging. Two elderly patients who presented with severe otalgia and significant facial nerve palsy and lower cranial nerve palsies showing extensive spread of disease are reported in this case series. They both had resolution of disease after a prolo

A case of bone destruction caused by chronic non-bacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) successfully repaired with a tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) inhibitor, adalimumab.

Chronic Non-bacterial Osteomyelitis (CNO) is an autoinflammatory bone disorder that causes non-bacterial and non-neoplastic osteomyelitis. CNO appeared to the long bone, clavicle, pelvis, and spine on children commonly. This time, we report a case with osteomyelitis of the mandible for the adult-onset. A 25-year-old woman presented pustulosis palmaris/pustular psoriasis after the extraction of the lower right tooth 1 year before hospitalisation. She felt pain and swelling of the right jaw and an antibiotic, NSAIDs, and glucocorticoids were ineffective. The cortical osteotomy of right mandibula

An Unusual Presentation of Merkel Cell Carcinoma in a HIV Patient: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, rapidly growing, aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer that generally arises on sun-exposed areas of body such as head, neck, upper limbs, and shoulders of people with light complexity. Typically, MCC presents as shiny, flesh-colored or bluish-red, intracutaneous nodule, possibly with ulceration or crusting. In most of the cases, there is an association with Merkel cell polyomavirus. Even though these are very aggressive tumors, early detection and treatment has always given favorable outcome. There seems to be no consensus in definite prognostic markers,

Life-threatening Listeria meningitis: Need for revision of South African acute bacterial meningitis treatment guidelines.

BACKGROUND: The recent listeriosis outbreak in South Africa (SA) received widespread attention in the media. More than 1 000 laboratory-confirmed cases of listeriosis occurred during an 18-month period, with a case fatality rate of 28%. Acute bacterial meningitis due to listeriosis was extremely rare at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria until 2017/18, when we saw two very sick adults with this condition during the listeriosis outbreak. OBJECTIVES: To describe the presentation, treatment and outcome of these patients to raise awareness of this potentially fatal but treatable infection t

Ischemic stroke and disseminated tuberculosis in a child living with human immunodeficiency virus: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrovascular accidents are rare in children. Rates of stroke in children with human immunodeficiency virus infection are higher than in the uninfected population. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 19-month-old Ethiopian boy who presented with a left-sided body weakness of sudden onset. He was also diagnosed as having human immunodeficiency virus infection. Laboratory tests showed an iron deficiency anemia and imaging revealed tuberculosis of his lungs, spleen, and abdominal lymph nodes as well as an acute ischemic stroke of the right middle cerebral artery region. His

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the fallopian tube: Three case reports and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Leiomyosarcoma of the fallopian tube is a rare malignant gynecologic neoplasm with poor prognosis. It is important to share experience and to collect more cases to improve the understanding of the disease. CASE REPORT: We reported three patients with leiomyosarcoma of the fallopian tube who were treated in Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center (Shanghai, China) from 2012 to 2016. Although the three cases shared the same diagnosis, they varied in the presentations, treatments, and outcomes. CONCLUSION: Leiomyosarcoma of the fallopian tube seems to have some particularities in ima

Evaluation of two commercial CT metal artifact reduction algorithms for use in proton radiotherapy treatment planning in the head and neck area.

PURPOSE: To evaluate two commercial CT metal artifact reduction (MAR) algorithms for use in proton treatment planning in the head and neck (H&N) area. METHODS: An anthropomorphic head phantom with removable metallic implants (dental fillings or neck implant) was CT-scanned to evaluate the O-MAR (Philips) and the iMAR (Siemens) algorithms. Reference images were acquired without any metallic implants in place. Water equivalent thickness (WET) was calculated for different path directions and compared between image sets. Images were also evaluated for use in proton treatment planning for parotid,

Surgical management of pulsatile tinnitus secondary to jugular bulb or sigmoid sinus diverticulum with review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Jugular bulb and sigmoid sinus anomalies are well-known causes of vascular pulsatile tinnitus. Common anomalies reported in the literature include high-riding and/or dehiscent jugular bulb, and sigmoid sinus dehiscence. However, cases of pulsatile tinnitus due to diverticulosis of the jugular bulb or sigmoid sinus are less commonly encountered, with the best management option yet to be established. In particular, reports on surgical management of pulsatile tinnitus caused by jugular bulb diverticulum have been lacking in the literature. OBJECTIVES: To report two cases of pulsati

Slow correction of severe spastic hyperlordosis in an adult by means of magnetically expandable rods.

BACKGROUND: We describe a case of severe and progressive lumbar hyperlordosis (160°) in a 28-year-old female university student with cerebral palsy. Her main complaints were abdominal wall pain and increasing inability to sit in her custom wheelchair. METHOD: When deciding on our opinion about the most promising treatment strategy, we contemplated slow continued correction by means of percutaneously expandable magnetic rods (MAGEC) after the index surgery as a key component of a satisfactory correction in this severe and rigid curve. After an initial radical release and partial correction, a
