Protracted manifestations of acute dependence after a single morphine exposure.

RATIONALE: Acute opiate exposure produces a state of dependence in humans and animals, which is revealed by signs and symptoms of withdrawal precipitated by opioid receptor antagonists. The physiological changes that underlie this state of acute dependence develop rapidly and can persist long after the end of chronic opiate exposure. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this investigation was to determine the persistence of acute dependence after a single morphine exposure in rodents, focusing on changes in behavior thought to reflect the negative emotional consequences of withdrawal. METHODS: The aco

Early life exposure to noise alters the representation of auditory localization cues in the auditory space map of the barn owl.

The auditory space map in the optic tectum (OT) (also known as superior colliculus in mammals) relies on the tuning of neurons to auditory localization cues that correspond to specific sound source locations. This study investigates the effects of early auditory experiences on the neural representation of binaural auditory localization cues. Young barn owls were raised in continuous omnidirectional broadband noise from before hearing onset to the age of ∼ 65 days. Data from these birds were compared with data from age-matched control owls and from normal adult owls (>200 days). In noise-reared

Responses of neurons in the cat primary auditory cortex to sequential sounds.

In the natural acoustic environment sounds frequently arrive at the two ears in quick succession. The responses of a cortical neuron to acoustic stimuli can be dramatically altered, usually suppressed, by a preceding sound. The purpose of this study was to determine if the binaural interaction evoked by a preceding sound is involved in subsequent suppressive interactions observed in auditory cortex neurons. Responses of neurons in the primary auditory cortex (AI) exhibiting binaural suppressive interactions (EO/I) were studied in barbiturate-anesthetized cats. For the majority (72.5%) of EO/I

The influence of speaking rate on nasality in the speech of hearing-impaired individuals.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether deliberate increases in speaking rate would serve to decrease the amount of nasality in the speech of severely hearing-impaired individuals. METHOD: The participants were 11 severely to profoundly hearing-impaired students, ranging in age from 12 to 19 years (M = 16 years). Each participant provided a baseline speech sample (R1) followed by 3 training sessions during which participants were trained to increase their speaking rate. Following the training sessions, a second speech sample was obtained (R2). Acoustic and perceptual analy

An auditory region in the primate insular cortex responding preferentially to vocal communication sounds.

Human imaging studies implicate the insular cortex in processing complex sounds and vocal communication signals such as speech. In addition, lesions of the insula often manifest as deficits in sound or speech recognition (auditory agnosia) and speech production. While models of acoustic perception assign an important role to the insula, little is known about the underlying neuronal substrate. Studying a vocal primate, we identified a predominantly auditory region in the caudal insula and therein discovered a neural representation of conspecific communication sounds. When probed with natural so

In defense of the stethoscope.

The stethoscope is widely considered to be an unreliable instrument. Many studies document the significant observer variability in its use. Numerous other diagnostic tools are available that are generally regarded to provide more reliable diagnostic information. Some even argue that teaching of the ancient art should be de-emphasized in medical schools. Yet auscultation with an acoustic stethoscope can provide important, even life-saving, information. The purpose of this article is to present evidence that supports the use of the stethoscope in clinical medicine. The argument for the stethosco

High-resolution cry analysis in preterm newborn infants.

Infant monitoring is a common procedure in clinical practice in neonatal critical care units. A number of vital functions are monitored, such as heart beat, breathing, blood flow, etc. Specifically, preterm and/or low-birth-weight infants often present respiratory problems that require monitoring. These may range from insufficient ventilation to apnoea. One of the most common events that may affect the respiratory flow is crying, a physiological action made by the infant to communicate and draw attention, but, for a preterm infant, this action requires great effort, which may cause distress an

Nitric oxide synthase inhibitor reduces noise-induced cochlear damage in guinea pigs.

CONCLUSION: The results obtained in this study indicate that NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) protects cochlear damage from acoustic trauma through reducing the production of nitric oxide (NO). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore whether NO synthase inhibitor L-NAME could reduce cochlear damage in acoustic trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy guinea pigs (300-350g) were divided randomly into four groups (n=20 in groups I, III, and IV; n=10 in group II). Two days consecutively and 30min before noise exposure (4kHz octave band, 115dB SPL 5h), subjects received an injection of 5m

A BAD link to mitochondrial cell death in the cochlea of mice with noise-induced hearing loss.

Acoustic overstimulation induces calcium overload and activation of mitochondria-mediated cell death pathways in outer hair cells (OHC) of the cochlea. However, it is not known whether these events are interrelated or independent. We have recently reported that the calcium-dependent phosphatase calcineurin is activated in OHC following noise exposure and now postulate that calcium overload triggers mitochondria-mediated death pathways through activation of Bcl-2-associated death promoter (BAD) by calcineurin. CBA/J mice were exposed to broadband noise (2-20 kHz), causing a permanent threshold

CC chemokine receptor 2 is protective against noise-induced hair cell death: studies in CX3CR1(+/GFP) mice.

Acoustic trauma was recently shown to induce an inflammatory response in the ear characterized by rapid entry of macrophages in the spiral ligament. The current study seeks to elucidate the mechanisms involved in summoning macrophages to the cochlear lateral wall and the role macrophages play in noise-induced injury or repair. CCL2 and its primary receptor, CCR2, are the most widely validated effectors of monocyte chemotaxis in vivo. CCL2-/- and CCR2-/- mice have been used extensively in studies of monocyte activation in neuronal injury. However, the function of CCL2 and CCR2 in the cochlea ha

Anxiety levels and wild running susceptibility in rats: assessment with elevated plus maze test and predator odor exposure.

It is reported in the literature that nearly 20% of rats are susceptible to displays of wild running (WR) behavior when submitted to high intensity acoustic stimulation. Some characteristics of WR suggest that it can be viewed as a panic-like reaction. This work aimed to test whether WR-sensitive rats show higher levels of anxiety in elevated-plus-maze (EPM) and predator-odor exposure paradigms in comparison with WR-resistant ones. Male adult Wistar rats were submitted to two trials of acoustic stimulation (104 dB, 60 s) in order to assess WR susceptibility. Seven WR-sensitive and 15 WR-resist
