Prevalence of Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating Behaviours amongst Adolescents and Young Adults in Saudi Arabia: A Systematic Review.

Eating disorders (EDs) and disordered eating behaviours (DEBs) are significant health problems related to body image and weight dissatisfaction among adolescents and young adults worldwide. During this stage of sensitive development, these behaviours may hinder the optimal growth process and can consequently lead to wasting, stunting, and micronutrient deficiencies. However, there is a limited amount of literature on DEB among Arab populations, particularly in Saudi Arabia. This review aims to assess the prevalence of EDs/DEB and to develop a clear understanding of the epidemiology of such con

Developmental Sequela for Sexual Homicide: Testing an Integrated Multi-Theoretical Model.

Research focusing on the role of adverse childhood experience (ACE) of individuals involved in sexual homicide (SH) is scarce. Theoretical models of SH have postulated a connection between these adverse experiences and the development of internal risk factors. However, such assumptions have never been empirically tested. Therefore, the current research aims to identify how ACEs affect the development of personality disorders and problematic behaviors during adolescence, which constitute internal risk factors for the commission of SH. The sample comes from a database including 613 individuals i

Sleep Timing in Patients with Precocious and Delayed Pubertal Development.

Previous studies have reported a shift in the timing of sleep during adolescence toward a later time. To date, it is unclear whether hormonal changes during puberty might contribute to this change in sleeping behavior. We systematically assessed pubertal development and sleep timing in a cross-sectional case-control study in girls with precocious (n = 42) and boys with delayed pubertal development (n = 19). We used the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire and the Children's ChronoType Questionnaire to assess sleep timing in patients and age- and sex-matched controls (n = 309) and used the midpoint

Growth disturbance of the sternum and pectus deformities: imaging studies and clinical correlation.

BACKGROUND: Radiologic reports of "normal" chest are not uncommon when there clearly are irregularities of sternal ossification and maturation. Analysis of imaging studies of sternal deformities for growth disturbances is not common in the literature and is addressed in this manuscript. OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of sternal growth on development of pectus deformities and correlate imaging studies with clinical aspects of different types of these deformities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred forty-one children and adolescents with pectus deformities were evaluated. Sternal growth

The effect of alcohol on the developing organism. Genetical, teratological and physiological aspects.

In discussing the effects of alcohol on infants, children and adolescents, it is common to refer first to sociological data and only secondly to medical and biological information, often with scarce experimental support. Recently, however, the genetic, teratological and physiological aspects of the effects of alcohol on the developing organism have been the subject of several investigations, both in man and in experimental animals. It cannot be excluded that genetic factors influence the metabolism of alcohol. The effects of alcohol on some physiological functions vary between different racial

Plasma per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) concentrations in mid-childhood and associations with DNA methylation and epigenetic aging through early adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread synthetic chemicals. PFAS exposure in early life has previously been associated with DNA methylation (DNAm) variation. However, limited studies have examined associations of childhood PFAS exposure with DNAm in childhood or adolescence. OBJECTIVE: We examined associations of mid-childhood plasma PFAS concentrations with mid-childhood leukocyte DNAm and epigenetic age acceleration, and whether associations were similar in early adolescence. METHODS: In participants from the Project Viva prospective cohort in eastern Massach

Problematic social media use and eating behaviors in adolescence: gender-based differences.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a key period for shaping eating behaviors. Social media, central to identity formation and peer interaction, may influence diet through appearance-related mechanisms, with possible gender differences. This study investigated associations between social media use, addiction, and disorder with eating behaviors among Turkish adolescents, focusing on the mediating role of appearance-related social media consciousness. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 487 high school students aged 14-18 years in Manavgat, Antalya, Türkiye. Measures included the Social

Adaptation of an mHealth Solution for the Nutritional Management of Diabetes in a Low- and Middle-Income Country: Pre-Post Mixed Methods Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Carbohydrate counting (CC) is vital for individuals living with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM); yet, formal training is often lacking in many contexts. To bridge this gap, the parents of a person living with diabetes and a team at the Geneva University Hospital (HUG) developed WebDia, a free-access app that helps patients with T1DM assess meal carbohydrates and make informed decisions regarding insulin dosage. In the context of Peru, where dietary patterns and meal compositions may differ, customizing WebDia to suit the components of the Peruvian diet becomes particularly relevant

Enhancing digital health literacy in adolescents: evaluation of a co-designed educational app.

BACKGROUND: With more people turning to the unregulated environment of the internet for health information, digital health literacy is increasingly important to assess trustworthiness of online health information. Adolescents' digital health literacy has long been overlooked because of the false assumption that they possess advanced skills due to being raised in a digital age. It is important that adolescents are given opportunities to develop their digital health literacy, however there is a lack of relevant educational resources, especially self-directed online resources. With adolescents, w

Temporal longitudinal associations of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and carotid intima-media thickness with resting heart rate and inflammation in youth.

We examined the temporal longitudinal associations of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) with the risk of elevated resting heart rate (RHR) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). We studied 3,862 adolescents, mean age 17.7 (SD 0.3 yr), followed-up for 7 yr until age 24.5 (0.7) yr, from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, UK. RHR, fasting plasma hsCRP, cfPWV, and cIMT were repeatedly assessed and analyzed using logistic regression, linear mixed-effect, and structural equation models adjusting for important covariates.

Association of consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages with cognitive function among the adolescents aged 12-16 years in US, NHANES III, 1988-1994.

OBJECTIVE: As a major source of added sugar, the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) continues to increase worldwide. The adverse health effects associated with SSBs are also risk factors for cognitive development, but studies on the relationship between SSBs and adolescents' cognitive function are limited. We used data released by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III (1988-1994) to explore the association between the consumption of SSBs and cognitive function among children and adolescents aged 12-16 years in the United States. METHODS AND PROCEDURES:

Comparison of 2 family therapies for adolescent anorexia nervosa: a randomized parallel trial.

IMPORTANCE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious disorder with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Family-based treatment (FBT) is an evidence-based therapy for adolescent AN, but less than half of those who receive this approach recover. Hence, it is important to identify other approaches to prevent the development of the chronic form of AN for which there is no known evidence-based treatment. OBJECTIVE: To compare FBT with systemic family therapy (SyFT) for the treatment of adolescent-onset AN. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Research in Anorexia Nervosa (RIAN) is a 2-group (FBT and Sy

Alterations in growth hormone secretory dynamics in adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa and effects on bone metabolism.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a disorder that is increasing in frequency in adolescents, and the age of onset is often in the prepubertal years, potentially affecting the development of peak bone mass and linear growth. The GH-IGF-I axis plays an important role in bone formation, and alterations in GH secretory patterns have been described in adult women with AN. However, GH secretory dynamics in adolescents with AN have not been described, and the effects of alterations in GH secretory patterns and GH concentration on bone metabolism in AN are not known. We examined patterns of GH secretion by dec

Which personality traits are necessary conditions for problematic alcohol use? Insights from a 23-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Personality traits have been consistently linked to alcohol use. High neuroticism and extraversion and low agreeableness and conscientiousness are known risk factors for both alcohol use frequency and problematic use across the lifespan. These associations have mostly been studied in the sufficient causality domain ("if X, then probably Y"), whereas little is known about these relationships in the necessary causality one ("if not X, then not Y"). Knowing that a variable is a necessary cause for an outcome helps identify who will be at risk for the outcome and who will be v

Differences in parent and youth perceived neighborhood threat on nucleus accumbens-frontoparietal network resting state connectivity and alcohol sipping in children enrolled in the ABCD study.

PURPOSE: Evidence has shown neighborhood threat (NT) as a social driver of emotional and brain development. Few studies have examined the relationship between NT and neural function. Altered functional connectivity in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) with the frontoparietal network (FPN) has been implicated in the development of substance use, however, little is known about perceived NT-related brain function or downstream alcohol sipping during early adolescence. This study examined the longitudinal relationship between youth and combined youth/parent perceived NT, resting state functional connec
